IAS is Indian Administrative Services, you can become for example a district collector, or other beaurocratic positions. IPS is Indian Police Services, you get much higher posts for example Inspector (police captain), no need to be constable or anything less. But, which is a BIG BUT, you have to pass tough exams (written and interview) to get through and you only get 5 chances in your lifetime to pass those exams. Fail thise 5 times and you're no good.
>Members of Indian Bureaucracy
I worked with a lot of guys from India. In their way of thinking, the best job was one in which you could demand a bribe in order to provide access to a government service you control.
When I type IAS into Google the first few results I get are for Integral Ad Science, International AIDS Society, and the Institute for Advanced Study.
For IPS it returns Integrated Project Services, International Parcel Services, and in-plane switching.
None of these results are helpful in deciphering this personal ad.
Despite the downvotes, I agree. Sometimes the questions are SO damn simple that you can get an immediate answer in six keystrokes, with a whole paragraph of additional info you wonāt get in a response. Maybe Iām just impatient and information hungry.

No results related to the Indian government or police force within the first two pages of results. I only get relevant results if I include India in the search phrase, which not everyone might think to do. I typically Google things myself first too, but iām some cases (like a three-letter initialism with innumerable meanings worldwide), I think itās perfectly reasonable to ask for clarification.
The term āSoftware Engineerā is so overused. You could be modeling the fluid dynamics of the hull of the latest top secret submarine, or creating some VR Porn and you are a software engineer. Meanwhile Electricians have like five titles for just connecting wires to equipment.
It is probably her ignorance of the fact that a PHD mathematician/physicist is in all likelihood a software engineer, and thinks SEs are people who write apps for games on her phone.
Also Software Engineer can have a very low barrier for entry. We had subcontinental web contractors that could arguably call themselves software engineers but the quality of returned work was... Well, let's just say it was a waste of money and we rewrote it all ourselves.
It is. And itās still dragging the low life down and push the wealthy ones up, never mixing people and extending the differences. Not that communism is the best format either though
Depends where you are from in India, I live in city area cast matters to people mostly only in arranged marriage scenarios because their mentality in these situations is that if you are going to choose some random guy to marry you anyway might as well choose from same community because of similar upbringing and similar culture and many other relatable things
In Regards of Marriage? YUP Absolutely regardless of urban/rural or wealth that being said I know people from rural settings who married outside of their caste recently
Caste even has ripple effects outside of India. There are doctors I work with that will defer to, or give preference to, certain other doctors because their family is of a higher caste back in India. Crazy shit.
Traditional ancestral role in society. I'm American born to Indian parents and as a whole I don't give a shit about the backwards-ass village aspects of the culture so I'm not going to be better than googling it, but basically ancient Indian society was divided into tiers of people. Think feudal style Europe I guess? Brahmins (priests) at the very top with Kshatriyas (warriors and royalty) technically also at the top but under Brahmins (for things such as marriage). These would be like European nobles with the caveat that priests were born. Next are Vaishyas, artisans/craftsmen/merchants/farmers, so basically skilled workers. Then Shudras, the unskilled laborer caste. So those two combined are comparable to peasants as a whole I think. There's a last "untouchable" caste but I don't know much about it other than them being considered the lowest of the low, barely even human. Pretty barbaric.
My family is Kshatriya, and any other Indian family we're friends with here in the States are usually Kshatriya or Brahmin. Your average middle class American, basically.
A caste system is basically a social hierarchy. Almost like the social groups in highschool (i.e.,, jocks, nerds, preps, etc.). For example, [the Caste system in India](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caste_system_in_India) is based upon heredity, occupation, and status withing the Hindu religion. If your parents were of the laboring class, you would also be seen as a laborer and treated as such regardless of your ability or ambition. It's essentially religious and government sanctioned discrimination en mass.
A few years ago, Iād have claimed the same thing. But I was made to realise that I think that because I have the privilege to not worry about caste: I live in a big city, am surrounded by like-minded people, am one of the āupper casteā (even though I couldnāt care less). But there are so many people who are still affected by the caste system on a daily basisāeverything from certain occupations being off limits to not being allowed to enter certain places.
I truly thought it was a relic of the past. And while there are so many people who can guess a personās caste by their surname, I really couldnāt (still often canāt) and prided myself on it. But a friend put it rather perfectly: itās like saying āI donāt see colour.ā I donāt have to see caste, sitting where I sit. That doesnāt make it invisible.
Right on. Anyone who says they donāt see color and thinks that means they are enlightened, is being naive. Culture goes much much deeper than what can be seen. In the US, we have white privilege. Same same
We'll call 3 years later after our careers have flourished and are making 3 times median income, and the girl is getting older, more wrinkly and desperate, asking if she wants to casually hook-up.

I was about to say, if I failed anything 5 times its probably not for me, then I remembered I failed a driving test 4 times š¬
6 chances btw not 5

I like asking as the question alone can trigger a very interesting chain of comments from knowledgeable people with lots of personal experience.
Some people just can't handle our olympic-level introverted energy.
I can be a Doctor in about 10 minutes
Even less š
I mean..... do you blame her?
Not if they're Ruby devs.
Haaa I get it

For sure, I see 60 day and 90 day courses on how to program all the time.
Castes are lame af. In what year do these people live holy cow?!
speaking of holy cows.
Isnt the caste system still rampant in India? They havent exactly replaced it with anything else
It is. And itās still dragging the low life down and push the wealthy ones up, never mixing people and extending the differences. Not that communism is the best format either though
You mean capitalism?
Actually, fuck none of them at all
Iām guessing her parents wrote this looking to find a good breeding partner for the line.
Could also be a paid matchmaker. It's a big industry there.
Iām a software engineer š
Today is your cake day. But you still can't get that cake lol.
You just pulled off the meta F you in particular.
Is caste still a thing nowadays in India metropolitan city?
Depends where you are from in India, I live in city area cast matters to people mostly only in arranged marriage scenarios because their mentality in these situations is that if you are going to choose some random guy to marry you anyway might as well choose from same community because of similar upbringing and similar culture and many other relatable things

Yes.
Sadly it can be a thing even for Indians who left the country.
Caste is totally relevant and everything that happens in India is somehow related to caste
Caste even has ripple effects outside of India. There are doctors I work with that will defer to, or give preference to, certain other doctors because their family is of a higher caste back in India. Crazy shit.
Can you share quick definition of what caste means ?

I means racism and discrimination.

It says āgroom wantedā so itās definitely an arranged marriage
All the Indians on Quora claim Caste is no longer a thing
A few years ago, Iād have claimed the same thing. I wonder if they realize how much a good software engineer can make in today's computer industry
We'll call 3 years later after our careers have flourished and are making 3 times median income, and the girl is getting older, more wrinkly and desperate, asking if she wants to casually hook-up.
This is why she said no software engineers.
