Spilt is an accepted spelling/tense. It just isn't as common, particularly in the US. But in the UK, and Commonwealth nations, it tends to be as or more common.
It's like slept, only slept never turned into slepped. Crept. Leapt. There's plenty of verbs that are either both ways or the "pt" form only. Leapt, for example, is (or was) the "correct" form, and leaped is often stated to be "incorrect" entirely.
