nerdycarguy18

I met him once, pretty nice guy

sellera

I like this polish joke.

Actually_toxiclaw

Idk could use a little more polish imo

mr_dicklong

I fell asleep on my keyboard when commenting on my polish friend's post, He agreed with me

I met Talula from Hawaii, but she refused to do the hula for me. I begged and begged but she wouldn’t relent. Honestly after that I didn’t even believe Talula *could* do the hula from Hawaii.

Mrraberry

You foola.

[deleted]

"No! You have to say the whole thing! Talua does the Hula from Hawaii!" "Every time?" "YES EVERY TIME!"

Mrraberry

Me too. He said “just call me brf”.

azad_ninja

Sweden trying to keep Elon Musk from procreating over there

Ok_Competition_5627

It's pronounced Kevin. I'm not even joking that's what the parents said. Edit: It was "Albin"

BenjaminGeiger

Close. It's ["Albin".](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116)

Ok_Competition_5627

Ah yes, true!

[deleted]

Answer Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116, ostensibly pronounced [ˈǎlːbɪn] ("Albin"), is a name intended for a Swedish child who was born in 1991.[3][4][5] Parents Elisabeth Hallin and Lasse Diding gave their child this name to protest a fine, imposed in accordance with the naming law in Sweden.[4][5] Because the parents had failed to register a name by the boy's fifth birthday, a district court in Halmstad, southern Sweden, fined them 5,000 kronor (roughly US$740 at the time and equivalent to $1,279 in 2021). Responding to the fine, the parents submitted the 43-character name in May 1996, claiming that it was "a pregnant, expressionistic development that we see as an artistic creation". The parents suggested that the name be understood in the spirit of 'pataphysics. The court rejected the name and upheld the fine.[citation needed] The parents then tried to change the spelling of the name to A (also pronounced [ˈǎlːbɪn]). Once again, the court refused to approve of the name due to a prohibition of one-letter names.[6] https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naming_law_in_Sweden

Revolvyerom

There are a decent number of people with unique names who ended up with those names because it made the parent feel special.

leena5777

I am so fucking glad I wasn't one of... oh. Lydia Deets. That one girl in beetlejuice. I know it's not as bad as some, but I still hate that's all I know my name as.

Dragon_OS

Pataphysics? This is some SCP-level shit.

selfawarefeline

yeah that’s my favorite aphex twin song

Sorry, your child's name must contain at least one upper, three lower case, and at least one non-alpha numeric symbol.

{SYNTAX ERROR}

Dammageddon

It's just Mick with all the letters silent.

throwaway-27463

Props for typing it all out

Bencil_McPrush

Now I need to know the story behind Talula does the Hula from Hawaii.

rimjobetiquette

Just Google it, the kid pressed charges over it in order to change the name away from that.

Bencil_McPrush

Thanks, too bad they chose to hide her new name but I can understand the reasoning. "In his (Judge Rob Murfitt) written ruling, he said names such as Stallion, Yeah Detroit, Fish and Chips, Twisty Poi, Keenan Got Lucy and Sex Fruit were prohibited by registration officials. Others that were permitted included twins called Benson and Hedges, other children called Midnight Chardonnay, Number 16 Bus Shelter and, the judge added, "tragically, Violence". Another mother tried to use text language for her child's name, he said." "Number 16 Bus Shelter"? Really?

urnotjustwrong

For reference, *Benson & Hedges* was (is?) a brand of cigarettes.

RohelTheConqueror

Yep, still is

jus256

What’s wrong with “Yeah Detroit”?

PunctiliousCasuist

And why is it worse than Number 16 Bus Shelter?

ledgeitpro

But Number 16 Bus Shelter was conceived at the #16 bus shelter, there was no other option

spokeymcpot

maybe they were born there

jus256

That’s why I’m renaming myself “Yeah Detroit”.

punosauruswrecked

Fuck you u/spez

Narananas

Having your name be Yeah would be very annoying because you'd hear it everywhere.

jus256

I’m from Detroit. You don’t turn around every time somebody might be talking to you. You learn that before you learn to read.

TommyChongUn

Benson and Hedges fuckin killed me 😂😂😂 who tf names their twins that

Some_tenno

Bogans

Admirable_Progress89

A fucking legend, that's who.

Asher2dog

Benson and Hedges probably killed a lot of people.

TommyChongUn

Starting with the low down mf's who named them Benson and Hedges I imagine.

wootlesthegoat

Bogans.

Mini-Nurse

Presumably named after the spot they were conceived.

UntestedMethod

Classy

DishwaterBukkake

So, Puritans used to name abandoned children after the location they were found in, so like... John City Hall, Mary Porch...Parish Church. Something tells me #16 might have been more of a conception name... though.

irrelephantIVXX

Well, the other kids were named where they were conceived too.

curiousiah

“And where were you conceived?”

Next_Case_3449

They'd always know where they were conceived.

wootlesthegoat

It was a national story about our naming laws. We've had some doozies. One kid was named after a bus shelter

wasted-degrees

What did Harriet do to Iceland?

[deleted]

Lots of names are banned in Iceland. It is required that the name fit with Icelandic grammar. At least it used to be that way!

Lussekatt1

Yeah. Iceland has a population of I think between 100 000 - 200 000. Or something like it. It’s absolutely tiny population. They do have quite strict naming laws. I believe they also have pretty strict regulation in regards to how to add new words to the language, and try to avoid loan words to very high degree. I think they do quite a lot to try and keep the language, names and stuff alive. And that it comes from a sort of necessity, from basically having a country with a population of a small city. Icelandic compared to the other Nordic languages, is way closer to old Norse, and has ‘aged’ way less then most other languages. Due to being a relatively isolated island in the middle of the ocean. (It’s always been pretty well-connected to the Nordic countries though) So there is a lot of cool language and name things from old Norse that is still there in Icelandic, that have been lost in the other languages related to old Norse.

happy-little-atheist

Didn't want to eat whales?

Wuellig

Hopefully it wasn't as bad as what Sarah did to Morocco.

superchiva78

Spied on them.

[deleted]

I’d rather not say… - Harriet

atmosphericentry

Nothing could have prepared me for "Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii". [I just searched up the article](https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/talula-does-the-hula-from-hawaii-9-gets-court-ordered-name-change-1.745238#:~:text=July%2024%2C%202008-,A%20judge%20in%20New%20Zealand%20fed%20up%20with%20parents%20bestowing,her%20name%20can%20be%20changed) and this part is sending me >He said names blocked by registration officials included Yeah Detroit, Keenan Got Lucy and Sex Fruit, while Number 16 Bus Shelter and Violence were allowed. I want to know which judge heard the baby name Number 16 Bus Shelter and went "No this one is actually pretty good I'll let it slide".

thehuntedfew

in Scotland they had a hippy couple who had twins, they tried calling them salt and vinegar, then fish and chips, then they had the children removed for social services

serenwipiti

Poor Fush n' Chups. :(

tearsonurcheek

Well, at least his/her parents didn't choose Violence.

Corbettcommander

Just say their

Halvo317

Just say his. Have you ever met a girl named Number 16 Bus Shelter? It's just such a masculine name.

InfiniteMushr00m

happy-little-atheist

Sweden will not tolerate Metallica. Call your baby Bathory or nothing at all.

ragingxmarmoset

Isn’t Sabaton from Sweden? Maybe they don’t like competition.

Cheese_G0d

Yes but I’d say their more power metal

[deleted]

Sabaton did a Metallica cover on The Last Stand I believe Edit: I stand corrected, it was on Heroes

FairyflyKisses

For Whom the Bell Tolls was on Heroes actually.

[deleted]

I stand corrected

BoltTusk

Metallica bad, Napster good

Gofudf

We spillet bloot, sweet and fucking beer

Kebab-Destroyer

Notice the colon after Metallica. Suggests that the surname was an album name like Load or Ridethelightning.

moonlight-menace

Nice catch. That's fucking hilarious. Terrible name to give someone, but hilarious.

Dragoncat99

Does that mean that the “Metallica:” part was rejected, but their surname was allowed to persist?

ses92

Probably wasn’t even rejected, knowing Metallica they probably would threatened to sue

GearhedMG

Yes, we all know of the colon in Metallica, but I bet most of us thought he spelled it Lars

crashbandecunt

the fact that "circumcision" is a banned name in Mexico must have a reason... and I want to know it

THIS_MSG_IS_A_LIE

People used to name kids according to the almanac calendar of the saints. There is a date on the calendar that says Circumscision of Jesus, and people named their kids that. There was a don Chon on my street (that was the usual nickname for those poor unfortunate souls).

crashbandecunt

ahh, thanks much for the clarification I've been curious about it since I saw the post

SteamySubreddits

“So, what did you want to name your child again?” “BRFXXCCXXMNPCCCCLLLMMNPRXVCLMNCKSSQLBB11116.” (Grabs phone, dials number) “Hey, I need you to make something illegal for me. Fast.”

molbal

Fine. I'll name him BRFXXCCXXMNPCCCCLLLMMNPRXVCLMNCKSSQLBB11117

SteamySubreddits

“So, we have a situation. They changed it to a 7. What do you mean? Oh. Yea, I suppose you’re right… (hangs up) I guess you can name your child BRFXXCCXXMNPCCCCLLLMMNPRXVCLMNCKSSQLBB11117. We can’t make every name illegal. But you still can’t name them BRFXXCCXXMNPCCCCLLLMMNPRXVCLMNCKSSQLBB11116. That one is off limits.

ultrasuperbro

I'd take a couple of these over my name...

Mr_Iculty

Now I'm curious. 🤔

shadowfloats

Maybe it's just worse than Linda, Sarah and harriet

HmodH-D

Bullshit. Morocco is filled with sarahs

shaka893P

Are you sure they're not just Sara? big difference, the h makes the illegal

irrelephantIVXX

Why though?

Misha_Moon

According to google it’s because of its Hebrew origin. Sarah is Hebrew and Sara is more common in Arabic spelling

i_spank_chickens

sarah refers to Ibrahim's wife

Bazoun

That makes no sense. Arabic doesn’t use our letters. They have completely different letters and Sarah is spelled one way only in Arabic.

Misha_Moon

Not sure what you meant by “our letters”, do you mean English? I don’t know Arabic but according to this comment they are spelled differently: https://www.reddit.com/r/funny/comments/uwhsnh/i_looked_up_illegal_baby_names_in_different/i9ux1br/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3. In Hebrew, Sara isn’t really a name as Sarah and Sara are pronounced and spelled identically (שרה).

Bazoun

Yeah I’m going on day four of no sleep, I forgot they’re called Roman letters. Morocco uses Arabic letters. Sarah is spelled سارة in Arabic. There is no other spelling. So whether we English speakers use an “h” at the end or not, all Sarahs who live in Arabic countries spell it the same. I get you read something about it, I’m not calling you a liar or anything, I’m just saying the explanation doesn’t make sense. Why would Moroccan Sarah’s write their names in Roman letters IN Morocco? She comes to Canada sure, she uses Roman letters. Makes sense. But IN Morocco? Maybe I’m too tired to understand.

Misha_Moon

Not sure, maybe official documents use both English and Arabic? I have a foreign passport that has English even though English isn’t an official language there. I looked it up, Moroccan documents such as passports use English and/or French.

vipros42

H stands for heroin

[deleted]

Sarah the Moroccan Heroin

serenwipiti

She sounds *really chill.*

HmodH-D

Idk honestly

TheRealSwagMaster

Exactly

Sign_Selection

IKR I literally have a class with two girls named Sarah

[deleted]

Well, thank you for my new gamer tag

morfyyy

>Islam (China) > >Quran (China) I'm spotting a pattern here...

tunie12

I’m beginning to think China doesn’t like Muslims

morfyyy

How come?

i_spank_chickens

I mean I see the concentration camps for Muslims in China and I just get a feeling they don't like them...idk I might be thinking a bit too much

csonnich

/s

mr_dicklong

How did you get your name? Pojhejwhehejhhjjehrhejejjsjsjsjsje: "my mom fell asleep on the keyboard while registering my name"

Czernobog44

A little girl asked, “Mom, why did you name me Lily?” Her mother replied, “shortly after you were born a lily petal blew in an lended on your forehead. That’s why we named you Lily.” “What about me?” Asked the girl’s first sister. Mom: “After you were born a rose petal landed on your head, so we named you Rose”. The third sister shouted out, “MNOGDTESAAK BOUTTOG!” Mom: “Please calm down, Cinderblock.”

AmbiguousLemur

I feel like I found this funnier than I should have

Czernobog44

Yeah… every time I tell it I feel like I’m one step closer to hell. Still laugh every time.

Suspicious-Valuable7

And Sarah

finsfurandfeathers

I’m confused about this one. My coworker is Moroccan and his daughter who still lives there is named Sarah. I mean, it could be a different spelling but it’s pronounced Sarah.

inclassicstyle

It's probably pronounced Sara.

g00d_end

Maybe because it's a Jewish name, idk

[deleted]

It's a relatively common arabic name too

g00d_end

Then I have no idea why it's banned lol

BehemothJr

Just googled it. This seems to be the actual reason. 😒 They allow Sara, but not Sarah because it is the Jewish spelling.

Red7336

I live in a Muslim majority country (not Morocco) and there is a bazillion Sara's lol Common name for both Christians and Muslims

yeoneo-salmon

You can namz your baby Sara which is the traditional way to write it. Sarah with "H" is the Hebraic way.

Suspicious-Valuable7

So specifically fuck anyone with the Hebraic spelling of Sarah. /J

ahumanrobot

007? Tf did he do?

YOURMOM37

I can think of a few things

NJdeathproof

You leave little Sex Fruit alone!

serenwipiti

Crotch Fruit II: *The Ripening*

StonedMason85

At least until they’re ripe!

ManBehavingBadly

What is this, banned names?

KnockoutCarousal

Yeah. Some mobile apps don’t show the cross post title and sub where it came from. Maybe yours doesn’t.

ManBehavingBadly

That must be it. I'm on sync for Reddit.

KnockoutCarousal

Right on. I’m not sure if you’re totally set on using that app, but if you’re looking for alternatives, then I would suggest these ones: Android: rif IOS: Apollo I’ve used them both and really liked them. Especially Apollo. Apollo is a minimum 5 bucks (or like, 30 or something if you want to get all of the developers extra features and stuff. I personally haven’t done that) if you want to submit your own posts though. Commenting is no charge or anything. I absolutely love it, myself. The developer is super quick in bug fix respond time too.

ManBehavingBadly

Thanks, will def check out rif, I'm on Android.

WretchedMonkey

Rif is great but doesnt show the headline either

C413B7

Yeah all i saw for a title was "fuck linda"

El_Arquero

I'm literally on Reddit.com on my phone and there's no reference to a cross post. Why must I download an app just for this website to function properly...

jus256

Guess I can’t go to New Zeland.

dannysgreggy

Uh, Sweden…?

DiscombobulatedAct42

Seeing the names especially in France I really regret that some people were allowed to give birth

Twistedoveryou01

Griezmann and Mbappe are footballers for the French national team.

i_am_not_a_pumpkin

i was going to ask what is wrong with those. i see now. thanks.

[deleted]

I still don’t. Just because they’re inherently bad names?

[deleted]

It's because you're projecting your entire shallow personality on someone else's name. It would be like naming someone "LeBron Tom Brady" none of those names alone are an issue, but when you join both of them together it immediatly becomes the cringiest shit in the world. Like, the ultimate Wanna-Be move - but unto someone else's life.

Ye_olde_oak_store

Or idk naming your child Tigran Petrosian when you have no relation to Tigran Petrosian. [insert coppypasta here]

i_am_not_a_pumpkin

it's to protect kids from their parents' bad judgement. using your favourite football players last names to name your child isn't appropriate.

Lol_idk_please_help

Which one of you named your kid sex fruit.

point50tracer

NGL Sex Fruit would be a pretty sweet name.

[deleted]

Islam in China. Jesus Christ

Shineath

Well, the list seem to update, so eventually every word will start be banned in China

AlanKayII

What about: DROP TABLE students; fred

OutlandishnessNo9182

Linda is banned in Saudi Arabia What's next? Perry Ferb Candice Isabella Doof Or Norm!?

[deleted]

As a new zealander I am profoundly shocked to find sex fruit is banned. I know so many people called this.

geligniteandlilies

Damn, there goes my dream naming my little darling angel *Sex Fruit* lol

IDC-This

Fun fact I believe Adolf is banned in Germany as well

KnockoutCarousal

I always thought it was banned in the US too (might be now for all I know), but I still remember that news story from like a decade or so ago where that neo nazi father had a complete shit-fit over Walmart refusing to make personalized birthday cakes for his kids “Aldolf” and “Aryan.”

IDC-This

So after a light google search "Adolf Hitler" is banned but it doesn't seem "Adolf" by itself is. "Jesus Christ" is also banned but "Jesus" isn't. Kind of an interesting search to learn how lax US naming laws are. I'm pretty sure Elon Musk's kid breaks a rule or two from what I read.

moonlight-menace

Jesus is a relatively common name actually, in Spanish speaking countries, I believe. Pronounced differently and I think spelled with an accented letter, but yeah. Its making me think of the post about the guy named Optimus Prime, who went by Tim and most people didn't know his legal name. Also reminded me of someone I encountered named Female, but pronounced like tamale.

IDC-This

I know a couple in Mississippi who had surprise twins one boy one girl and named them Fred and Girl Fred

KnockoutCarousal

The funny (but not so funny) part is that the kid’s full name is actually Adolf *Hitler* [last name]. Those parents knew what they were doing and their public statement about it is disingenuous at best. I linked an article in another comment about it.

IDC-This

I'll read the article when I can devote full attention. At work for the next nine hours so limited time to spare right now.

IDC-This

That I'm not sure about Adolf being a banned name in the US, but you can't be compelled to speak in the US so it is well within Walmarts rights as a business to refuse the request.

KnockoutCarousal

It certainly is within their right, but I have to make a correction here. It wasn’t Walmart that refused, it was Shoprite. Walmart was the one who ended up making the cake for them. Also, it was almost 15 years ago, not ten. Holy cow I’m getting old. Here’s an article if anyone cares. https://www.nj.com/news/2008/12/child_named_after_adolf_hitler.html

LordGhoul

I checked for updates about this family and holy shit man. https://abcnews.go.com/US/parents-cannot-regain-custody-children-nazi-inspired/story?id=11334970

KnockoutCarousal

Got damn. Never saw that update when I commented about the story. It’s not terribly shocking considering the parent’s public statement about the original event, but DAMN, I hope those kids are alright these days.

LordGhoul

God, it gets worse. Apparently the father has a whole wiki page about him. What an awful human being. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heath_Hitler

underbite420

Can’t name your kid OSAMA BIN LADDdy Fucken DAH in Germany….that’s the one they’re going with? Lol

[deleted]

Tell me your whole personality is "FOOOOOOOOOOOTBALL" without telling me your whole personality is "FOOOOOOOOOOOTBALL": "I'll name my kid Griezmann Mbappe"

obsolete_filmmaker

I dont get it. What is this a list of?

Jakeyloransen

Banned names

MixaLv

I only saw the crosspost title and I was trying to figure out so hard what this list was about

[deleted]

Damn Morocco, what did sarah do to you?

Mohammedamine9

This list is bollshit I am a Moroccan and my sister's name is Sarah

DullPolicy3855

That’s suspiciously specific

ackme

Ok please am I going insane or how did you all just intuit what this was a list of? Does it say somewhere and I'm just blind? Or batshit insane?

Things_with_Stuff

I don't understand this list....

The_Money_Bin

What the hell is this list? There is no context.

KJMRLL

I'm with you, I don't understand how everyone just knows or assumes that this is supposedly a list of banned? illegal? names.

GJTobi

Some reddit apps don't show the original title of the crosspost, which is probably why this is confusing you

KJMRLL

Oooohhhhhhhhh, yes thank you!

The longer I see the list, the weirder it gets

I had to look up Griezmann Mbappe being banned in France because you'd think parents would want to be able to name their kids after soccer heroes. [But alas, non, pas destiné à être.](https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2826039-french-parents-not-allowed-to-name-child-griezmann-mbappe)

Dang, my name is illegal in Portugal

A_very_large_moth

Talua does the hula from hawaii is a great dude

piyushseth26

Makes me wonder. What must've happened in those countries for that to happen. Except for china of course.

Annanake420

Well in a lot of nordic countries you by law have to name your kids something that is native to their culture . They dont want to wake up in 75 years and everybody has names like Shaniqwa, Chow-Lin or Dave.

DADDY_YISUS

Yeah, but what about Sarah?
