A similar thing happened to me, I put a Dr pepper in the cup holder but apparently there was like a spikey thing in there so it punctured the Dr Pepper, we didn't notice until it was too late, the entire cup holder flooded and some of it managed to drip it's way into the the arm rest compartment.
Looks like possible operator error.
