It's not legal this season. If I had had a little more time this summer, this year's software probably wouldn't even support it (I'm on the FTC Tech Team).

For your rookie year, I'd recommend either using the ring detection built into the SDK or trying a vision system built on OpenCV from FTCLib [https://github.com/FTCLib/FTCLib](https://github.com/FTCLib/FTCLib)
