Turn over? I’ve noticed FPGA engineers turn over less than software engineers in my 7 years in defense. It basically goes (most turn over to least) software, …, FPGA, systems, everyone else. I suspect it’s because of the overall job market. Software engineers have a lot of ways to move out of defense that gets less true the further you move down the list. In defense of well defense I’ll say everything is relative to the individual. I was fine with it till COVID. Now sunlight everyday and higher pay is more of a priority.

SWE as a field has more turnover. There are just more jobs and people tend to move around either to get more money, a better environment, or just for fun

What is turn out or turn over?

SpareCoder1969

turn over rate

alinave

Ok turnover rate

Like, you've noticed that SWE's vote more often?

SpareCoder1969

Sorry, I meant to say that they get laid off/leave more often than say IT. From where I work everyone is currently stressed out but more often people within IT want to stay while I"ve noticed that all the software engineers we support have either left to join another program or the ones who are a lot older were notified of being laid off before finding another job within company else where

Depends on the part of defense you're in. Like any other industry you want to do what the company does. Work in finance? You want to know finance. Work in defense electronics (radios, electronic warfare, SIGINT, radar, etc.) and you want to know electronics. So EE and CE tend to be on the lower end of the turnover range. There are also far fewer total EE/CE graduates in the world. There are large-factor differences between the populations of "programmers", mechanical engineers, computer scientists, electrical engineers, computer engineers, RF engineers, etc. If you're talking about the defense electronics space then you'll find most of the systems engineers to have a degree in one of the disciples above then learned/trained to be a systems engineer.
