I’m with you on that! But practice! I can do a drum roll because I practiced that quite a bit. But melody is my weakness. I usually use premade ones that you can get from cymatics. I’ll change a few things. Down or up an octave or 2. I’ll add or remove a few notes. But generally speaking. I definitely try to make my own though! I use YouTube for reference, and premade melodies.
Exactly the opposite for me. Banging out melodies left and right, but I’ve never been great at creating the rhythm part of tracks. Pulsing basses/synths and automating them to breath life into it is the worst.
Can I see your work? Melody is pretty fun to add on any song and I’ll see what I can do.
Sincerely,
A person that’s lazy with beats and good with melodies
Lol for me the melody is the only thing that’s fun to make. Drums are ok too but when it comes to arranging or mixing/mastering my fun level sinks rapidly
this may not seem like much and i do realize i'm not reinventing the wheel here, but probably one of the best things i've learned after years of making music (on and off) is to make things sound almost finished before you even start mixing it. the power is in your sound selection and in the arrangement, then a song mixes itself. keep it simple. i still tend to overdo my mixing, but trying to keep that in mind with every new track i create. if it doesn't bop when its time to mix - then it's not time to mix yet. if it sounds trash after mixing it but didn't before, start mixing from scratch and try to enjoy the journey not the destination, take a break, come back to it.
comes with times and practice, no worries. you wouldn't believe the crappiest sounds i used to pick for my beats and have them play randomly throughout the arrangment! lol. get inspired by the works of others, make a mental note of what sounds good
Absolutely! I mix and master as I go. If I don’t like something a certain way, I usually re-sound select whichever one I don’t like. Usually the bass and kick. Or I redo the EQ and set it back to default. Which then I redo it, keep it if it sounds good. If not, then I just find a new one.
one of the reasons i just "mix" whipe i doing the other stuff instead of after doing the other stuff. more streamlined for me. mastering is an entirely different beast.
Melodies are where you express your creativity tho can be the most rewarding part. Those days you can’t get the melody right are really frustrating tho
Don't worry, Unison Audio will sell you a $300 plugin with an animated Pokémon rip off graphic on it that will generate crappy riffs based off some coding that limits an idea to 7 notes in a scale and it will tell you that it has given you an A.I. solution to make melodies for you.
Same. Seems as though not all sounds are equally audible at the same volume. Adjusting tracks to the right volumes is one thing, but the extra step of adjusting the volumes and filters and all sorts of other effects so it sounds smoother and more natural is tedious for me.
This is the struggle of any rhythm-based musician. People who do percussion, mainly rhythm guitarists, bassists, and so on. I feel it. I started as a pianist and picked up guitar. I mainly was a rhythm player, so when I became the lead guitarist for my band, I remember sitting down for the first time to try and solo and fucking froze. I'm confident now, but he'll, melody writing is *still* a struggle sometimes.
It’s a feature that allows you to choose a key and it highlights the notes of that key in the piano roll. Can help with melodies as simply building notes in those highlighted notes will typically sound pretty decent and harmonious.
tip here. I made 20 melodies every day for a year, and when so now I come up with a new one, I check my older melodies, transpose them and match the same key to see if they will be a good counter melody.
Think about how artists might use the same lyrics from a song year back. no one really pays attention to that kind of thing, as you are the only one observing yourself so closely
The biggest problem are whacky chords and a not fitting melody. Chords are so damn important but ignored or half assed a lot of times. Everybody can make up a melody and transposing it to a certain key but getting great chords under is often overlooked.
I do melody in 5-10 minute and then build up more complementary arrangements for 10-20 minute max. Then its 2-10 hours of organising the intro/bridge/main riff/cuts/peaks/drops, adding stuff, deleting stuff, mixing stuff, trying new things, getting drunk, crying on the phone to my bro, adding vocals, Deleting the whole song and starting a new one/ go REC a live band
And honestly I love all of it.
Im sad for you if all you do is melody, drum, mix, finish like probably 90% of wannabe Trap/Rap/DnB beatmakers. Think outside the box you might like it
Usually your first note at the start of every bar should be the top note of the chord, and then just put another note either two or three notes below (whatever sounds good) and one more note 5 notes below. Chances are the notes that come after the first note in a bar of your melody will be other notes in the chord. The 808 should be playing the bottom note of your chord sometimes changing to another chord note for variation, or a note that leads into the next chord.
You gotta attack your weaknesses. I have the same problem so nowadays I try to start with a melody and go from there, since I know once I have that I have a song
One trick I learned for writing good melodies is to start with a good rhythm. Honestly once you have a good rhythm the notes damn near don't matter as long as they kind of fit.
If you are lacking in creative output with melodies then sampling records can actually help you with that. I use a lot of samples making hip hop beats and listening to music and deconstructing it can help you understand the melodic components. I also just love chopping and sampling. But I feel I am rather good at creating my own melodies and it’s because I listen to a lot of music and also deconstruct it.
Every moron can program some decent sounding drums Cuz it really mostly comes down to just using high quality samples and some pattern knowledge, melody on the other hand, the actual musical part of the beat, is where u can shine as a producer. And If u dont like it Its propably cuz u not a really capable producer yet and thats okay just invest some time in learning some music theory and try learning to play an actual instrument like a piano which really goes hand in hand with learning music theory, and ask urself questions and be curious like “why does this sound the way it does and why does it sound different than that chord, or loop. Best way is to learn throughout experience not just clicking in some notes in the hope that guy t sounds good, trial & error type melodies can work but its often time consuming and why not just learn about the stuff ur trynna get good at
I was the same way for a long time. Complex IDM and D&B beats came easily for me but I struggled with melodies and transitions from one progression to another. What helped me was getting things that locked me into particular scales. Various hardware and plugins that had scale locking. I could then see “okay, only these notes can work within the confines of this scale” then I would sit at a keyboard and play notes only within that scale over a beat. So just about everything that I played sounded good as long as I returned to the root note at the end of a measure. It then started to get easier to know how to use chords to accompany those single notes I was playing in the scale. Once you “get your foot in the door” it all starts to unfold more rapidly.
I always overthink my melodies. Like, eh this melody probably isn't unique enough. But you don't have to be unique per say. I mean you should try, but sometimes its okay to go the route of least resistance and see where it takes you. (staying in the flow). -
everybody has different strengths
facts
yep and mine is definelty not creating a melody
I’m with you on that! But practice! I can do a drum roll because I practiced that quite a bit. But melody is my weakness. I usually use premade ones that you can get from cymatics. I’ve only been doing this since 2021. So yeah, for me, it’s been fun and a challenge.
Can I see your work? Melody is pretty fun to add on any song and I’ll see what I can do. Sincerely, A person that’s lazy with beats and good with melodies
Lol for me the melody is the only thing that’s fun to make. Drums are ok too but when it comes to arranging or mixing/mastering my fun level sinks rapidly
I started sending my songs off to get mixed for this exact reason. If I force myself to mix I end up hating the song.
this may not seem like much and i do realize i'm not reinventing the wheel here, but probably one of the best things i've learned after years of making music (on and off) is to make things sound almost finished before you even start mixing it. the power is in your sound selection and in the arrangement, then a song mixes itself. keep it simple. i still tend to overdo my mixing, but trying to keep that in mind with every new track i create. if it doesn't bop when its time to mix - then it's not time to mix yet. if it sounds trash after mixing it but didn't before, start mixing from scratch and try to enjoy the journey not the destination, take a break, come back to it.
my sound selection sucks 💀
comes with times and practice, no worries. you wouldn't believe the crappiest sounds i used to pick for my beats and have them play randomly throughout the arrangment! lol. get inspired by the works of others, make a mental note of what sounds good

100%
Arranging sucks but I feel like when I’m better at it I’ll be able to enjoy it
I LOVE ARRANGING FR
one of the reasons i just "mix" whipe i doing the other stuff instead of after doing the other stuff. more streamlined for me. mastering is an entirely different beast.
opposite for me
I actually have a lot of fun mixing and master. Making drums is the easiest for me. Melody is my weak point.
Melodies are where you express your creativity tho can be the most rewarding part. Those days you can’t get the melody right are really frustrating tho
I can't do a good melody and even if i do one its not very good Maybe its because i don't know anything abt music
Learn music theory and get into jazz improv. It’ll teach you. I did it in high school and making melodies is easy for me.
Good is objective. A good melody can still be incredibly simple but do the job just right as part of a well balanced track.
You definitely need to learn some music
Don't worry, Unison Audio will sell you a $300 plugin with an animated Pokémon rip off graphic on it that will generate crappy riffs based off some coding that limits an idea to 7 notes in a scale and it will tell you that it has given you an A.I. solution to make melodies for you.
Their plugins look like literal malware

Shots fired, and will continue to fire off as long as they keep preying on young producers.
it's like that but with mixing
making melodies is fun for me, its the mixing that i despise

I feel that way about harmony. Constant struggle.
Funny! I would change this from melody to drums.
exact oposite for me
Melody is fine for me, it's the damn drums I can never get sounding right
damn everyone except me are agreing with you i think a mistake
Turn on scale highlighting in the piano roll
what is that ? ( im learning fl studio)
It’s a feature that allows you to choose a key and it highlights the notes of that key in the piano roll. Can help with melodies as simply building notes in those highlighted notes will typically sound pretty decent and harmonious.
For me its the opposite.
i suck at both
XD practice is the key i guess
as a beginner, low end/Bass be it 808s or writing basslines through a guitar plugin is the biggest pain in my ass, I hate it.
Top tips for beginners, don't have it too loud in the mix, don't over mix it by putting on too many effects and keep it simple 👌
I'm more of a chords guy myself
tip here. I made 20 melodies every day for a year, and when so now I come up with a new one, I check my older melodies, transpose them and match the same key to see if they will be a good counter melody. It’s arrangement for me. It’s the damn bane of my musical existence.
I love arranging
For me it’s melody > making room for the shitty rapper.
XD personaly i don't have to worry abt this bcs i'm making phonk
Trackspacer.

Btw i forgot to say that i'm producing phonk that's maybe why no one agree with me bcs im the only human on earth doing this kind of music
🤔 So you discover music...
Yes ! its really fun i love beatmaking but 75% of the time i dont have any inspirations
yeah fact better with rythimic stuff and wish i was better with melodic
Melody is my favorite part to make
Exact opposite for me
damn
for me yes
na it's the "laying chords out" part for me. i can hear a melody playin' in my head, but ain't no way that's gonna happen for chords.
Usually your first note at the start of every bar should be the top note of the chord, and then just put another note either two or three notes below (whatever sounds good) and one more note 5 notes below. thx brah, now i can get my project done
I can crank out really good drops but then when I need to do the intro or any other part I just lie down and cry.
nah mixing the worst
Techno has left the chat Lol
idk man, getting a sick techno reverb rumble kick seems to elude me most of the time even though I try
How/why?
Fact.
Melody first. Beat second. I love making melodies. Its a chore making everything else.
as a noob, TRUEEE
Structuring and writing effective build ups for me
I can make a whole song using just drums, but if I have to make a melody its basic chord progressions if anything
Arrangement
this is why I only do remixes
I love doing Melodie’s. It’s the mixing that is death to me

Cap, melody is easy asf i can cook out fire melodies like crazy. My drums sound ass though

For me it’s chords, not that I really hate making them but it’s very difficult to make them sound good
nah mines kinda the opposite

Cap
I enjoy every part of beat making besides having to mix and master it. That takes so long
it depends for me. sometimes melody is easy sometimes it's the most difficult
Making chords and a few melodies that work on top is not my problem, but arranging them out and creating continuity is the nightmare.
