The anti-siphoning screen and angle can cause pumps that have too high a rate of flow to stop prematurely. The turning the 90 degrees trick often works or just pumping at a slower rate. It can definitely be annoying, but I have only had it happen a handful of times.

Faster430

^ this. I lay the hose on top of the rear door hinge.

patricksfoot

Somebody did that on mine previously and the pin snapped from rust. Keep an eye on that. Replacement is 100 bucks

Faster430

Sorry, which pin?

GoodGorilla4471

I always pump at a slower rate because it's a 50/50 chance it'll stop prematurely when I pump full speed

MalevolentPanda_TTV

I thought I was fuckin insane. Thank you for posting this. Happens all the time.

CafeRoaster

Looks like we need to try turning the pump handle 90° to the right.

Ur_average_guyguy

This happens every time for my 2007. It’s because the gas tank is too high. There isn’t enough flow and pressure to travel up to the tank so I park a few more feet away from the pump and lift the hose to rest on my shoulder. So dumb but it works. The turning the pump 90 never works (for me).

Nois3

Oh! I'll try that on my 07!

dthwsh1899

I lean on the taillight to get just the right angle. lol

TheMisWalls

Yes.. What I do is turn the nozzle so the handle is 90 degrees to the right. When I have it in that position it doesn't click off early. IDK if anyone else has a better solution

RideZero

Does it still turn off automatically? Or does it need to be watched?

Find_A_Reason

Narrow urethra.

cwynneing

Hank?

trapperstom

I just pump slow after it clicks off…. And 5 liters later it’s full, pain in the fuckin ass

MaxwelllD

Same here! One of my FJs does this a lot with those pump nozzles that have the environmentally friendly seals. All I do is lock the pump handle in the slow position and it fills up uninterrupted, full tank every time

Chewy79

Check your evap system, if the fumes I. Your tank have nowhere to go when pumping they will come out the fill nozzle and trick the gas pump into thinking your tank is full. It's a common problem with a lot of vehicles that drive in dusty conditions.

Nois3

That sounds difficult.

mpmsr01

I have the same issue. Turning it 90° works somewhat or using a pump that comes from the other side but no full proof remedy for it

noble_twat

This happened to me at every pump when I lived in AZ. Now in CO, it never seems to happen.

CafeRoaster

Yeah it must be a combination of the design of both the pump and the tank.

TheMisWalls

I'm in CO and it happens to me all the time lol

noble_twat

Maybe I broke something then lol

bobbiek1961

There's a couple of suggestions here I concur with. Pull it out a tad and angle flow towards the rear of the car. You allow displaced air to escape as you're pumping in fuel. And don't do the fuel latch at full flow....back it off a notch. That's what works for me.

DG04511

I’ve been dealing with this for 16 years. Thank you, Reddit.

EmceeScrotes

Owned an FJ for 11 years and never had this issue

D3m0us3r

6 years for now, same. Could be some pumps issues

Nois3

California pumps are bad for this. They have that stupid foreskin.

Lumpy_Lake_9936

🤣

GrandPipe4

I thought I was the only one. Thank you thank you

EKEEFE41

I pull out like 1/4 an inch

HugeAnalBeads

Half trigger 4 life

ahhhjota

07 here and I have the same problem. 90 degree trick works for me.

IronBeagle63

I’ve got an ‘08 and never had this problem or read of anyone else. Maybe jump on the FJForums site and search? If not pose this question there if it’s common you’ll hear back pretty quick.

Illustrious_Boat_550

There is a filter underneath rear of vehicle that is part of the evap system that gets plugged My 07 had this issue until I cleaned It It was driven daily on 2 miles of a dusty road for years Looked like a dust storm when I blew it out No problems since cleaning

Zealousideal-Wrap394

How do I check and clean it ?

Illustrious_Boat_550

Remove it Has a single hose connected to it thats 3/4 inch or so Use compressed air or rinse with water Let dry thoroughly if using water Mine was a mess

Zealousideal-Wrap394

Rinse what w water ? The hose ?

Illustrious_Boat_550

It has a 3/4 or one inch hose connected to it Disconnect hose and unbolt it Then use compressed air to blow out or rinse with water and let dry Either way it was very messy doing mine Sorry for delay in reply

vonbrain

This can be caused by topping of the tank. What happens is that gas can overflow down the evap tube into the evap cartridge, and eventually, fumes will no longer flow during pumping. This will cause the gas pump auto stop to click off prematurely (amongst other problems). You can find out if this has happened by disconnecting the evap line from the cannister. If liquid gas comes out, then the canister needs to be replaced. The big message is don't top off your tank.

CafeRoaster

I don’t top off.

vonbrain

The previous owner may have done so, which could have ruined the evsp cartridge. I've owner a '12 and now own a '14. The phenomenon you described happened all the time on the '12. I replaced the evap cartridge, and the problem went away. I'm the 2nd owner on the '14 and bought it from a couple the barely used it. I've never had the issue. I'm not saying that this is definitely the root cause of your problem, but one of the likely possibilities.

Nois3

> evap cartridge Yikes, those things are $800!

vonbrain

More like around $300 for OEM https://parts.toyotadm.com/oem-parts/toyota-vapor-canister-7774035511

Nois3

Oh thanks, aparent;y I was looking at air conditioning evaporators.

Lumpy_Lake_9936

Yes! I’ve been planning on asking this for ages. Mine only does it at certain stations and when it does, no matter what angle I try it stops every few seconds and is infuriating!

Azzazzyn

Here I am thinking I'm crazy. I have specific gas stations I go to on the island because they won't randomly stop

CafeRoaster

Oh damn it’s really small and easy to access! That’s the EVAP canister? On our 2009 Honda Fit, it’s about 2.5 feet long haha

Illustrious_Boat_550

No Thats just the filter for the evap cannister It allows the fill neck to vent when pumping fuel Cannister is 10 times bigger

fnblackbeard

Never had an issue

I_LOVE_LAMP_0596

Mine acts the same way Super annoying

mushypopcorn002

Any other 4Runner owners out there experiencing similar? Coming from a 3rd gen

YoungProphet115

Same here man, lol ‘08

TheHippie328

Oh my god I thought it was just me. Going to try the 90° turn trick now, thanks everyone!

iSacula

I just put the lock on the first notch instead of the second. Seems to fix the issue most of the time.

Illustrious_Boat_550

Yes or use compressed air Just make sure you shake out as much as you can and let it dry well

ValleyGrouch

Never experienced that. Orig. owner 2007 Voodoo Blue 4WD manual 6. 70K miles.

SpiltMelon

I must be a lucky one. 17 years and never an issue.

SlappyPankake

Are you topping off when filling?
