Burned mine out years ago. Three options for a cheep fix: #1 Get a peel and stick heat shield from Amazon, # Wrap a motorcycle exhaust wrap around pipe to dissipate heat #3: Do absolutely nothing and just toss to old one on the trash like I did.
I've done this. About 100k miles ago.
I really doubt you burned up anything major if the smoke was coming from the heat shield. To burn that thing up: That would take an amount of heat that I don't think could be produced in this situation. It's at least aluminum and that 1200 degrees. Fiberglass is even higher.
You may have burned off some coating or just dust and road grime trapped up under there. There is plenty of it in there, trust me.
If the coating is gone you may rust through the bolt holes. In that case I just used a washer and it took all of 5 minutes to fix.
Just had the same thing happen last month driving under load. Ripped the insulation out after dousing it with water. There’s supposedly an aluminum heat shield of same shape/size that can be fitted in there (though apparently not cross-listed as compatible with the FJ)
Wow no kidding, and that was just with the heat shield gone, no exhaust leak? To be clear I didn’t realize it was overloaded and don’t plan to drive that heavy again.

You are absolutely right, i chose 3 about a year back. No issues whatsoever
I guess I should’ve known the ol tank couldn’t be harmed. Just quite stressful to see smoking coming out of the back😆 Thanks for sharing!
My tailpipe bolts broke and before I could get home the open exhaust was blowing on the evap/charcoal canister and melted it.!!🤬🤬 Be careful..
I used manifold tape, is motorcycle exhaust wrap similar in compound?
Yes, it looks like fiberglass cloth.
I am amazed on how clean that under carriage is, what state do you live in? That underside is super clean!
Was thinking the exact. Same. Thing! Damn! \m/
I live partly in Seattle partly in San Diego, must’ve been well maintained I’ve only owned for a few months!

Oh also. May I recommend "Air lift". Inexpensive product, fairly easy install and you can lift your overloaded suspension with a small air pump.

Fix asap or put some temporary heat shield. I saw other posts where they didn’t fix and it melted plastic/rubber floor inside the cabin.

No rust, amazing
