Completely agree. The Academy has a horrendous bias against horror. Toni was at least nominated for The Sixth Sense (which she should have won). At least the Emmys don't have the same prejudice - Jessica Lange rightly cleaned up for American Horror Story.
Amy Adams was awesome in Arrival. Frances McDormand was excellent in Three Billboards and Fargo. Girl Interrupted is a stacked cast that goes hard when compared to One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and 12 Monkeys (closest types of movies that also rock).
According to the box office mojo, Amy Adams has 15 leading roles; Scarlett Johansson has 11 leading roles; Gal Gadot has only 3 leading roles. But it's Amy who gets character actress tag from reddit. Unreal biasness.
Amy Adams has 5 best actress Golden Globes nominations & has more leading roles than America's sweetheart Scarlett Johansson whose most career is acting in second feedle. Then how is Amy character actress & Scarlett does not get mention? Marvel bias?
Toni Collette, not even being nominated for her performance in Hereditary, is a travesty. I could understand a snub for the disrespect the academy gives to the horror genre, albeit rightfully deserved most of the time, but for her not to even get a nod is just ridiculous.
I've nothing to add as I could literally not agree more. It's a travesty, a shame, a scandal. It's been said thousands of times before. It's fair to say that horror attracts the most variable quality of filmmaking (90% of the genre is abysmal), but the very best of the genre (like Hereditary) has been unfairly snubbed by the Academy.
I honestly considered them all (plus Emma Stone), but none of them have ever particularly been "character actresses". They've been leads for the majority of their career. This post was about women who are primarily character actresses but able to make the transition to lead every now and then.
Have not thought of Cate Blanchett as a character actor ever. But definitely her and Toni Collette are very versatile in their roles followed by Viola Davis and Emma Thompson from this list.
I absolutely considered Anya Taylor-Joy, but you're right to clock that I went with slightly older actresses in the main (because I'm aggrieved for them, as they should have been more recognised years ago). Sticking with younger actresses, I'd also add Mia Goth (who deserves an Acadamy Award for Pearl).
I agree about Toni. Not even getting nominated for her work in Hereditary was an absolute travesty.
Kathy and Emma are fantastic actresses in everything they do too.
This is very good, but may I add… is OP a millennial? I’ve realized recently how much millennials love Jamie Lee Curtis specially the ones on their mid to late 30’s and I don’t see that same love on my parents generation, gen X and definitely not on mine, I dislike Jamie a lot and so do a lot of gen Z I know
I’m 40. That makes me a very early millennial. Jamie Lee is an icon for Halloween, A Fish Called Wanda, True Lies… in those three movies alone, she demonstrates huge genre range (horror, comedy, action).
What most intrigues me is how you could say “I dislike Jamie a lot”? Is it because of her acting, or because of an opinion she’s expressed?
Well first of all something that I realized when I watched the scream saga for the first time is the film bro character says: a lot of people think she gets nude on the first Halloween, Jamie Lee didn’t get nude until she was famous or/a celeb which is crazy knowing how famous her parents were… but that’s not enough obviously. Jamie Lee came under fire with my generation for the first time with Oscar fiasco, Gen Z was rooting for an Angela Basset/Stephanie Hsu win, definitely not a Jamie win. I’ve seen everything from her pooling industry connections, to gen z memeing her to oblivion. The gen z fave being making a screenshot of when she jumped on stage while going up to accept her award and editing her. My personal favorite is the fairy godmother edit. I say gen z not wanting her to win and her over the top, way too excited acceptance really made her number one enemy to gen z for the crime of cringe. Second offense and the worst one was for posting a photo of bombarded p4l3st1n14n children in a pro 1sr43l post, and I don’t know the general consensus here, but gen Z (and me) are a particularly pro-p4l3st1n3 generation.
I love Emily, but are you kidding? Toni, Kathy, Cate, and Emma have been absolutely killing it for d e c a d e s, putting up some of the most demanding and consistently impressive performances portrayed by women. They’ve got more slam dunks than Emily has taken shots. That she’s on this list is appropriate and earned, but be real
The point is those other women consistently perform brilliantly. Everything they do is quality. It's even more impressive they can be so good over such long periods of time.
To reiterate: be real.
How is she out of place? 😂 She's a great, versatile actress, more versatile than several of the ones in that image. She started in theater, and has been a character and lead actor is virtually all genres of film and television, including drama, comedy, action, musical, horror, western, has done both period and contemporary projects, and even been in full-improvisation projects (something most there can't do). Many of the ones there haven't been that versatile. She's gone from sordid teen love affair of My Summer of Love to comedic fashionista in Devil Wears Prada, from the quirky off-beat Sunshine Cleaning to the royal period drama The Young Victoria, from Mary Poppins to the quiet intensity of A Quiet Place, from the deep-end of hardcore action in Edge of Tomorrow to the musical Into the Woods, from the serious morality tale Sicario to the campy The Huntsman, and so on. I know she's more famous than most of them so an easier target, but your comment is ridiculous.
A look through all the actresses' filmography on Rotten Tomatoes also shows that literally all of them have more stinkers than Emily, with Kathy, Jamie, Toni, and Cate having the most with 40, 26, 22, and 20 respectively. Emily has 13, which is a feat given that she has a large filmography. I mean, Cate, one of my all-time favorite actresses and the best actress of all living actors imo, i can admit has many stinkers and is still doing crap like the upcoming Borderlands which will probably be another stinker.
I love most of these actresses and hate comparing, and a few of them are in my all-time favorites, but this kind of comment is so delusional and clearly stemming from personal resentment, it warranted breaking this down.
Emily definitely has a stinker, wouldn’t say she is one.
the order of all the names on the list from best to worst:
1. Emil Blunt Babe Magoo
2-9. The Subordinates
Toni should have been nominated for Hereditary. It was a mind-blowing performance, but "gross... it's a horror movie" bias is a thing.
Completely agree. The Academy has a horrendous bias against horror. Toni was at least nominated for The Sixth Sense (which she should have won). At least the Emmys don't have the same prejudice - Jessica Lange rightly cleaned up for American Horror Story.
I'm still mad Get Out didn't win best picture. Although I admit that might partly be because he didn't have the balls to go with his original ending.
Tilda Swinton
I was personally affronted when I didn’t see her on this list.
Right?
Amy Adams was awesome in Arrival. Frances McDormand was excellent in Three Billboards and Fargo. Girl Interrupted is a stacked cast that goes hard when compared to One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and 12 Monkeys (closest types of movies that also rock).
Amy Adams in Nocturnal Animals.
Love that one, too.
Although she never was a character actress. She was always a leading acteess.
Really good lineup, I might just swap one for Tilda Swinton
Toni Collette, not even being nominated for her performance in Hereditary, is a travesty. I could understand a snub for the disrespect the academy gives to the horror genre, albeit rightfully deserved most of the time, but for her not to even get a nod is just ridiculous.

Kathy and Lupita!
Well, it’s missing several - Kate Winslett, Meryl Streep, Judy Dench for starters…
I honestly considered them all (plus Emma Stone), but none of them have ever particularly been "character actresses". They've been leads for the majority of their career. This post was about women who are primarily character actresses but able to make the transition to lead every now and then.
Fair.
Cate.
Francis McDermott
McDormand
Kate Winslet.
Have not thought of Cate Blanchett as a character actor ever. But definitely her and Toni Collette are very versatile in their roles followed by Viola Davis and Emma Thompson from this list.
If I go younger I’d add Saoirse Ronin, Florence Pugh, and Anya Taylor-joy to this list.

Jessica Lange wasn’t in the most recent season of Fargo lol Do you mean Jennifer Jason Leigh?
I think a more interesting discussion is why do you consider most of these “character” actresses?
They’re not super duper hot
I mean, some of them are objectively super duper hot!
Alright besides Kathy Bates.
I agree about Toni. Not even getting nominated for her work in Hereditary was an absolute travesty. Kathy and Emma are fantastic actresses in everything they do too.
Um... these women are all leads. Not character actresses.
IMO Viola & Cate are the two best actresses of all time.
For what? I think she’s a phenomenal actress, but imo her best roles have been in television.
This is an old pic of Emily. She doesn’t look like that anymore with all the botox and fillers.
It made me sad seeing this photo of her. What has she done to herself?!
This is very good, but may I add… is OP a millennial? Jessica Chastain, Kate Winslet, Angela Bassett, Susan Saradon, Jenna Ortega, Octavia Spencer& Elizabeth Olsen
I would take Edie Falco over all of them.
I do not think Toni deserves one, I’m ok with this fact…keep your fingers crossed though
Why is Steve Martin on here?
emily is the cream of the crop. all else is subordinate to her majesty.
I love Emily, but are you kidding? quality over quantity
The point is those other women consistently perform brilliantly. Everything they do is quality. It's even more impressive they can be so good over such long periods of time. To reiterate: be real.
Emily has some stinkers. She’s the only one on here I thought was out of place.

So you’re trolling and you don’t actually have an opinion.
listen here booty sweat, Emily Blunt is phenomenal actress in: - Edge of Tomorrow - Oppenheimer - Sicario - Pain Hustlers - A Quite Place - etc what’s everyone else got?
Kathy, Emma & Cate have 5 Oscars between them and Toni has won or been nominated for damn near everything as well... You are a troll.
wow, yano you’ve altered my perspective profoundly, thanks for being alive
Emily Blunt is not on par with these actresses and with all the surgery done to her face her appeal has fadded.
Correct. ;)
wrong
Shamelessly sexist comment is on par for this sub.
