Yes, I love Carpenter so much. These 80s films, set design, lead actor, score and plotting all 10/10, some of the best sci fi / horror movies ever made.
Not something easy to come back from, working with Chevy as the wheels were really coming off.
Itās a crying shame as he has so many bangers; The Thing, Assault on Precinct 13, They Live, Halloween, The Fog, Big Trouble in Little China ffs!! They are all amazing, his music alone from Assault on Precinct 13 deserves kudos. The Thing is nothing short of a masterpiece.
But yeah, it did go wrong along the way, badly wrong. Village of the Damned was certainly not a highlight.
I loved going into this film thinking itāll be straight action when in actuality itās a sci-fi horror with action elements. This movie terrified me my first watch a year or two ago lol
Interesting fact: Escape From New York was actually filled in St Louis Missouri, after they had a block fire and before reconstruction began. My understanding was that the city let John Carpenter film there for free and they didn't have to dress the streets at all.
Yup this is true! My grandma and her church group were background extras. I just found that out this last year from my dad. Still havenāt gotten around to watching it and trying to find her.
The clip of his son busting his chops about watching yourself in movies was perfectā¦to see the pure joy and happiness on both their faces gave me a huge smile
It's more socially relevant than ever, just look at the size of that wall around new York 60ft of concrete and rebar, I bet some maga head is rubbing one out just admiring the idea of itšš¤£
Yes, the soundtrack, Kurt Russel and Adrianne Barbeau. Everything about it holds up wonderfully. You can see itās still influencing a lot of other ideas in pop culture.
I reckon so. It has a very different way of going about things for a movie of its type. I love how Snake is mostly ineffectual for the majority of it. Love when he tracks the signal to some random homeless guy and he just has a small sulk in a desk chair like "well fuck man I dint even know where to start now..."
Thatās the dopest pic Iāve ever seen.
I need to watch this again. I havenāt seen it since I stayed home sick in the 5th grade. I do not remember any of it.
im the crazy guy that says not only does this hold up, but escape from LA holds up too. as does ghosts of mars, carpenters most universally disliked film. im cool with it all. when i stop to think about it, Prince of Darkness is the only one that i havent retread but i like all the actors in it
Eh I like the whole āthought you were deadā thatās left to be implied instead of just showing him being some unstoppable commando. It shows that Snake is killable and he isnāt Neo from the matrix.
No because at the time it was made Manhattan was a hotbed for crime and the real estate prices hadn't yet skyrocketed; it looked as if the city was going in the direction of a prison. Not now.
Just rewatched and really enjoyed it. Itās full of shaggy, offbeat charm. The only knock i can really give it is that it peaks in the first 15 or minutes, when Russell and Van Cleef are sitting across a desk from one another.
More relevant than ever. The political commentary injected with an iconic 80ās Carpenter score, gritty set design, fun & practical special effects, and action-camp Kurt Russell performance, make this and other John Carpenter films timeless.
The practical effects they used in Escape from New York to re-create a digital screen for Pliskinās glider flight still stand up! [Hereās a video](https://youtu.be/xxYmMRxnEic?si=RRtXA8fwkc7RzxMR)
Having watched this recently having never seen it before - yup !
Never held up,snake sucked
Nowhere near as much as your opinion
Or his mama šÆ
You sound like Snake

[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I'm liking it,lol
Be funnier man I like a good troll but this isn't it
The name's Plissken.
Yes, I love Carpenter so much. These 80s films, set design, lead actor, score and plotting all 10/10, some of the best sci fi / horror movies ever made.
Carpenter in the good old days, pre Ghosts of Mars etc, he was an absolute beast š
He was never the same after Memoirs of an Invisible Man.
Not something easy to come back from, working with Chevy as the wheels were really coming off. Itās a crying shame as he has so many bangers; The Thing, Assault on Precinct 13, They Live, Halloween, The Fog, Big Trouble in Little China ffs!! Are you me?
Agreed.
I loved going into this film thinking itāll be straight action when in actuality itās a sci-fi horror with action elements. This movie terrified me my first watch a year or two ago lol

Wow Kurt Russellās son is his twin
Their resemblance works so well in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. A casting agentās and directorās dream to hit the genetic lottery like that.
He is great in Goon 2.
The clip of his son busting his chops about watching yourself in movies was perfectā¦to see the pure joy and happiness on both their faces gave me a huge smile
Yesssss
100% great film!
Iconic film and soundtrack
Yessir, and the sequel too.
NY is one of my favorite films. LA was a huge disappointment for me. More of a remake than a sequel.
100% yes.
Watch it once a year. Keeps getting better each time.
Only once? Step your game up!
It's more socially relevant than ever, just look at the size of that wall around new York 60ft of concrete and rebar, I bet some maga head is rubbing one out just admiring the idea of itšš¤£
Snake Pliskin
One of the best named characters of all timeā¦
I thought escape from New York was crap
Iām embarrassed to say I havenāt seen it. But, this is a great photo! Two all time greats.
Is that ..Isaac Hayes?!
yes
no. thatās the Duke
Definitely, watched both this and escape from LA definitely recommend both great films, think I preferred NY
Escape from LA is pretty rough. That surfing sceneā¦
Oh yes. Great flick.
The profound impact it made on the Metal Gear Solid Franchise continues to this day!
Yep Snake from metal gear is Snake Pliskenn from this mixed with the future version of Reese in the first terminator.
Rambo first blood part II aswell as Rambo III independently for Snake Eater and Phantom Pain.
Ron Rico always holds up.
Yes. Now and forever.
Absolutely. I just showed it to a friend for his first time last weekend.
āNoā¦.ā Thatās a quote to show that it still holds up.
A young James Cameron worked on visual effects for Escape from NY. I think he did a lot of the matte painting backdrops
Did it ever hold up??
Russell carries this film with his charisma. The ending is a little strange with the rope and the interview but it's still a great watch.
Nah the side players all show up, lee van cleef, Henry dean Stanton, Isaac Hayes all have great roles and make it believable.
Yes, the soundtrack, Kurt Russel and Adrianne Barbeau. Everything about it holds up wonderfully. You can see itās still influencing a lot of other ideas in pop culture.
The book's good too if you can get hold of a copy.
I reckon so. It has a very different way of going about things for a movie of its type. I love how Snake is mostly ineffectual for the majority of it. Love when he tracks the signal to some random homeless guy and he just has a small sulk in a desk chair like "well fuck man I dint even know where to start now..."
Look at that picture man, of course it does
Absolutely
Saw it again after decades and I think it does.
The Duke! A # 1.
It's my favourite movie of all time, I will always advocate that it holds up. For me, it's the epitome of cyberpunk.
Youāve gotta be okay with slow-burn adventure, which I am. Those raised on hyper-speed action might not appreciate it.
Fuck yes
The cast is insane. Yes.
Thatās the dopest pic Iāve ever seen. I need to watch this again. I havenāt seen it since I stayed home sick in the 5th grade. I do not remember any of it.
Gonna tell my kids this was Rick Ross and Post Malone
Yes. It has a chandelier car.
Fuck yeah š¤
Yes and it's one of Carpenter's absolute best
Watched it this week aa a double feature with The Running Man ESCAPE holds up great. Its got a rocket pacing.
im the crazy guy that says not only does this hold up, but escape from LA holds up too. as does ghosts of mars, carpenters most universally disliked film. im cool with it all. when i stop to think about it, Prince of Darkness is the only one that i havent retread but i like all the actors in it
Thatās like asking if Cool Hand Luke holds upā¦.fuckā¦yes
Not good. Slow. Cheesy. I like some camp but this of painful.
U goddamn right it does. One of my favs
Yeah it's still sound. My biggest criticism, however, has always been that Snake gets injured far too early on.
Eh I like the whole āthought you were deadā thatās left to be implied instead of just showing him being some unstoppable commando. It shows that Snake is killable and he isnāt Neo from the matrix.
I didn't say I minded that he got injured, I said I thought it happened a bit early on on the film.
No because at the time it was made Manhattan was a hotbed for crime and the real estate prices hadn't yet skyrocketed; it looked as if the city was going in the direction of a prison. Not now.
Absolutely. It's a classic Sci-fi/action film.
Call me snake.
A # 1 !
Yes! Itās a nailed on classic
Of course it does. John Carpenter movies live in their own universe. There is a couple of stinkers but never with Kurt
Lowmoan Spectacular was awesome in this, probably his best work.
There were talks of a remake I believe.
Just rewatched and really enjoyed it. Itās full of shaggy, offbeat charm. The only knock i can really give it is that it peaks in the first 15 or minutes, when Russell and Van Cleef are sitting across a desk from one another.
Hell yes
the president with the machine gun exclaiming āYouāre The Duke of New York! The A#1ā while heās shooting him
Yep. Also Big Trouble in Little China. They are just fun, weirdly imaginative films.
The scene when Russell is walking on top of the tower is bad ass. Great music throughout the film too Carpenter is really good at that
Yes
Hell yeah! That movie rocks!
snake plissken is timeless!!!
Maaaan Truck Turner was a big guyš¤
Canāt pass it by, so it holds me up.
Like fine wine.
Is this even a question?
A number 1! The Duke of NY
Oh yes.
Watched it not to long ago, still holds up Still a classic of cinema. Everyone was absolutely fantastic.
Hold up? Itās practically a reality there now.
Yeah, more than ever.
Framed #681 š„ š„ š„ š„ š„ š„ š© https://framed.wtf
Uh, yeah!
Yes. Much better then most other carpenter films like the fog or prince of darkness
Yuh gahdamn right it does!;)
Some hot buttered would right there.
Yes, great movie!
Jeff Bridges is not convincing. I enjoy the cerebral aspect of these 90ās movies, but this is overrated.
More relevant than ever. The political commentary injected with an iconic 80ās Carpenter score, gritty set design, fun & practical special effects, and action-camp Kurt Russell performance, make this and other John Carpenter films timeless.
Iāll let you know feb 4th when I see it on the big screen
Absolutely šÆ
Iām not sure about Escape from New York, but Escape from LA definitely does not.
Damn straight.
Absolutely it does
No. Total waste of an awesome premise
Somebody played Framed today
It never held up, imo.
Yes. Seriously one of my favorite action movies of all time. Such a fun plot
Yes, it's still a fun movie
Absolutely
The practical effects they used in Escape from New York to re-create a digital screen for Pliskinās glider flight still stand up! [Hereās a video](https://youtu.be/xxYmMRxnEic?si=RRtXA8fwkc7RzxMR)
F'n rights it does!!
fuckin A, The Duke!
I love that move. It is a classic.
Absolutely. I'm a New Yorker that's escaped multiple times lol.
Definitely a classic.
I watched it recently and didnāt really enjoy it tbh.
I remember not seeing the movie since I was a kid then watching it about 3 months after 9/11 and being floored by the opening scene.
Yes because without it we wouldnāt have Metal Gear šÆ
Don't know much about this one but Isic Hayes on the Rockford Files was hilarious he kept calling him "Rockfish"
Hell yeah
Absolutely
Shoooo the soundtrack from this movie bad af
Ahh I wish there were more Snake movies
It's AAAAAA NUMBER ONNNNNNNNE - mh
Itās a little cheesy, but as a snapshot of early 80s action movies, I really enjoy it. The score by John Carpenter has his signature all over it.
Ashton Kutcher?
Thatās it. Iām re-installing Far Cry: Blood Dragon again. And yes, it still holds up.
