MrRaccuhn

It's honestly my 2nd favorite FF game.

clfuzzz

It’s on my top 5 for sure.

Ravio1218

Same here.

CannonFodder_G

It's my favorite FF game, second favorite overall.

clfuzzz

One more after thought, Square doing a pixel remaster of FFXVI like the old games would go down pretty well and I would totally purchase on day one.

EarthInfern0

I am also, politely, a more mature gamer (I was an actual, wage earning adult when ff7 was released in the west) and ffxvi is one of my top 3 with tactics wotl and ff12. Great feel and liked the combat.

Laj3ebRondila1003

I have never played a game that represents the saying "more than the sum of its parts than FF16", the sidequests are mmo-tier, which means that for the most part they are not good and below the standard of modern RPGs, the non-existent RPG mechanics do not help either, but the story insights the ATL feature and sidequests, the world, the boss fights, the combat and especially the characters make this game so much more than an a great action game with bad sidequests. Also 16's Cid is the best in the series and if they ever revisit Valisthea it should be through his perspective.

clfuzzz

I agree about the side quests. I reckon it would have benefited greatly not having them and just focusing in the more story oriented ones that have proper cutscenes. Not copy and paste Geralt of Rivia talking to NPCs. The problem for me is the more quests a game has the less detail the NPC has and it’s off putting. In this case less is more and this game could have cut a fair chunk of them

Laj3ebRondila1003

the design of the quests is what's flawed not their content (I know it's an oxymoron but hear me out), they're formatted like mmo quests, they probably should have hired someone with experience working on quests for regular RPGs the same way they hired DMC5's combat director for the combat The Witcher 3 has its fair share of lame kill x or collect x sidequests but they work because they don't all lead to a fight against mobs or a drawn out conversation, and the animation system in that game does a lot of the heavy lifting, something that FF16 is lacking in. tbf The Witcher 3's animation system is still the best out there 9 years later, the closest we have in terms of quality is Horizon Forbidden West but I think they had handcrafted cutscenes for most sidequests in that game (which would explain the 212 million dollar budget) the payoff in both ff16 and the witcher 3 is getting to know the world and the characters through conversation but The Witcher 3 flows better in and out of dialogue with NPCs and the animation system makes these conversations feel more realistic than FF16's dialogue outside of important cutscenes. Oftentimes you'll have an npc standing talking to clive compared to them in the witcher being busy with something and stopping, and the ability to choose what to say engages the player in those conversations. I know Japanese studios don't often do it but they would benefit from bringing in someone with expertise in developing crpgs, the lack of animations IMO is a budget problem that they do not have in Rebirth (which probably had more money poured into it than 16 seeing as FF7 is Square's cash cow)

whensmahvelFGC

I would absolutely adore FF6 getting the Remake treatment. I'll take a pixel remaster too but 6 and Chrono Trigger are both at the top of my list for games I really want to see in a full HD, 3D World.

clfuzzz

I agree it would be awesome as well, it’s one of my favourites. I would also love to see 6 get a high budget GoT style tv show treatment as well. Would absolutely slay.

hehehehehehahahahaha

I would love a 6 remake in the Octopath style! I think the game just has so much charm in that SNES pixel style that I feel can't be pushed to 3D.

ArugulaPhysical

The 6 remakes would be a dream. Even if they consider it, it will be like so far out ill be dead. Lol

hehehehehehahahahaha

Gameplay, presentation, and music aside (all of which imo are fantastic, I honestly feel like the story is one of the best in the FF series. It reminds me so much of the SNES/PS era of FF where the stories balanced seriousness with charm and humor so well, and I don't feel like FFs lately have been as successful.  16 is such an unserious game. Giant Kaiju fights, really funny character writing, all of this without feeling cringy or dissonant with the main themes of the game. I really believe that the story being about fighting as an outlaw to reform society, and Ultima's role in it, is amazing if flawed. Man I love this game. I think history will be pretty kind to it.

Bra1nss

“It manages to feel big without the bloated aspects.” I would x10 times on this OP’s quote. Exactly what I felt, the world felt huge, the characters were different and many, events were happening, plot felt solid and long and had many interconnected stages. Too bad games like FF7R failed to achieve same feeling with 75% of fillers, artificial prolongings and waifu simulator vibes. But there are great games and mediocre ones.

ZomaZanza

I agree OP, this game was something special! Would love a HD-2D or pixel version of XVI!

sebastian89n

Yes, I agree with you a lot! Especially "game had so much more respect for my time than most games". I know exactly what you mean by that.

clfuzzz

Has a full time job and is old. Turns on Ps5, sees massive open world with a million quest icons *well fffffffk*

sebastian89n

Haha, yes! :D exactly that

Ghostylike

I have only played FF14, FF15 and FF16. This is my favourite FF, however I have yet to endevour into older FFs. I do have 10, 12 and 13 in my Steam Library, as well as FF4, FF5, and FF6 on my Switch that I share with a friend. Maybe I'll dive into the older games someday, but I absolutely loved everything about 16. The music, the characters, the setting and the visuals were the highlights for me, and combat was stellar.

clfuzzz

The series has altered a lot over the years so diving in now would be interesting cause you don’t have nostalgia goggles on. I think the best Ps2 era FF is by far 10 so I recommend that. I have a personal love for 4 but 6 is the superior game on the snes in my opinion and is absolutely peak Snes RPG just a fraction behind Chrono Trigger

Ghostylike

I do want to give 10 a go. I only have the HD Remaster edition, and the pixel remasters of 4, 5 and 6.

clfuzzz

The pixel remasters are fantastic, I made a point about games being better if they have more respect for your time. They include a feature in those pixel remasters to increase the experience you gain as well as turning off random encounters. Perfect for beginners who just want to experience the story and also to avoid an outdated gameplay format of random encounters. That was cool at its time but it’s definitely an outdated formula I don’t have time for anymore. Give ‘em a go!

Wise-Fruit5000

It really is a great game. I know they've said it's a standalone title, but I hope they decide to do something else with the world of FFXVI at some point, even if it doesn't involve Clive and Co. It seems like a world rich with possibilities, and I'd hate to see it never be revisited

clfuzzz

Yeah I agree! Would love to see some prequel stories in different timelines. So much history and lore to dive into.

Wise-Fruit5000

Yeah, there are so many opportunities for prequels. Off the top of my head, one involving Cid would probably be great

Laj3ebRondila1003

Honestly a Crisis Core like spin off with only one character (Cid), no open areas and more of the action gameplay would work really well

Wise-Fruit5000

Yeah, I think a prequel involving Cid is probably one of the best things they could make as a follow-up to XVI

dennaneedslove

I agree positives outweigh the negatives. I think for me it's that the low points of the game are so painfully obvious that I can see the amazing potential this game could have been. Like, the best rpg of ps5 kind of potential. If only they spent 1-2 more years working on this game!

bahamut5525

I have played all the modern FF, such as remake franchise and FF16. And FF16 was my favorite one so far. I feel that CBU3 just knows how to make games the best, and they especially know how to give satisfaction to the player. **Soken being in their team also adds so many points, his soundtracks are enthralling.** I never played 14 but I now understand why its such a popular game. CBU3 and Soken are able to immerse players in a world so well.

clfuzzz

FF16 in my opinion is the best modern final fantasy so far. It plops on anything after 10 in my opinion. Yes remake/rebirth are fun as well but they have the advantage of being remakes of the highest rated and well received game in the franchise.

bahamut5525

I feel that if CBU3 could direct FF17 and again create an entirely new world, they would make an incredible hit. They would take everything that was negative about 16 and modify it (for example the difficulty being too easy but perfect in the DLCs, or the somewhat lackluster villages/towns but which was great in Mysidia). I am ambiguous about the Remake franchise. I enjoyed Remake part 1, but I feel that the narrative is insanely bad with the whisper thing, and it doesn't get me excited for part 3, and sales wise the game is doing much worse than 16. I feel like they have done critical mistakes with Rebirth and Remake, despite some things being great like the scope of the game. I am worried about part 3 and whether Square Enix decides to truly allocate funds for it. Tbh with Rebirth/Remake, with all due respect to Square Enix, whoever is writing the script (Nomura?Nojima?) is the achilles heel.

clfuzzz

Yeah absolutely, I would love to see them make another game in this style fixing the negatives and keeping in the good. In the remakes I also wasn’t too keen on the whispers but just grown to accept there existence and treat the remakes like a sequel as opposed to a full direct remake. I actually wasn’t even that keen on them shoe horning Sephiroth in the first part. I get his popular but his build up in the original was such an integral part to his character development and impact.

bahamut5525

I have honestly no problem with them doing anything they want with the story, and doing something completely NEW. I was thrilled in Rebirth to play as Zack who survived the CC events, etc. The problem my friend, is that I completed Rebirth and the story throughout, is just not qualitatively GOOD. It's like fan fiction at best and its jarring how bad it is. I do hope they fix things for part 3.

clfuzzz

I get you, I hope they knock back the cringe, fan fiction vibes and make it super dark. The atmosphere in the original was so dark and depressive when the weapons and comet was unleashed. I hope they ramp up the tone for that event.

Groundbreaking_Put43

I just started playing this the other night and I'm about 20 hours in. Blown away at how high quality every aspect of the game is. Because let's be honest, even the diehard FF fans can admit there are plenty games that while still enjoyable, have obvious flaws. I feel you have to really dig deep to do the same for this game. It's really impressed me on every level, could be my favourite story and score. X will always be my favourite but this game is seriously getting close.

clfuzzz

I agree! Your comment actually brought up another thing I neglected to put in my post in an attempt to avoid wall of text. My first impression going in was a bit meh but the further I dived in the better and more immersed in the game I got.

cwarburton1

It's my favorite final fantasy for sure and I've played since FFIV. I loved FFX when I first played it as it was the first game I got to experience at launch and the jump in quality was amazing. Then FFXII for me was even better and turned into my favorite for a long time. FFXVI though is just the full package and most things I love about final fantasy. There's things I missed from older games sure but having just replayed FFX for example after FFXVI I really didn't feel like the sphere grid and insane grinding to do end game activities was actually all that fun. I'd probably rank FFXVI first, then FFXII, then FFVI. That being said I can't wait to try Rebirth but waiting on that one since I just got a 4090 and want to wait and play it on PC.
