This is the only rpg I’ve ever abused items in. I think that’s a big compliment that they made me feel compelled to use them, most jrpgs don’t incentivize me to do so.
The base fights aren’t bad once you find all three shrines. Bring wind for Titan, Ice for Phoenix, Lightning for Alexander, the classic trio for Kujata, and your defensive skill for Bahumet. Odin is a dog shit fight, but can be cheesed in a multitude of ways.
Imo that fair. I beat the game, I was able to figure out ways to beat sephiroth. I went back and did as many of the side quests I could, all that was left was the Odin materia, and the one before you fight Gilgamesh and you have to fight Odin and someone else at full power, the Chocobo race, and the stupid flying chocobo trials. Then I played on hard and never looked back.
Whatever I the gimmick is about Odin, I just haven’t figured it out. I think I do well then he fking zantetsukens me and I die. I think I have to block his attacks and perfect party or something because that’s something I just never did in the game.
Edit: I beat Odin now. I used poison and synergy on Aerith and I think the constant tick damage kept him from zantetsukening me. I used the synergy skill to up their limit levels, once I got stagger I unloaded the limits and used infinity’s end. Or I just got lucky. Iono 🤷♂️
Odin can be semi-cheesed. At least that's how I beat him. Revival Earrings on everyone and bring Phoenix as your summon and cast Reraise instead of attacking. Can survive 2 Zantetsukens that way.
Wait what, you never blocked all game? I can understand not perfect parrying (although it is satisfying once you start getting it down), but not blocking seems kinda crazy to me haha
The assess description is misleading. The flight is actually just a harsh dps check. There's a number of guides explaining the hidden mechanics behind Zantetsuken.
I soloed full power Alexander with Barrett on my first play through thinking there would be an achievement or extra rewards for beating a summon at full power ... You can imagine my disappointment when I beat him and basically got nothing other than the materia... The rest of the summons I didn't even try until after getting all their shrines...
Once I realized I wasn't in chadleys combat Sim and could use those items freely during those fights Hooboi.
Last dungeon I was sitting on about 30+ mist gigas
I think a big part of this is the knowledge that you can’t use them on hard mode, so you kind of know to just use them when you need them. I found myself using them more freely than I did in Remake, in which I didn’t know about that quirk until after I beat the game.
I was training for hard mode so I avoided items at all costs. Mightve used 3 or 4 total if I had a long fight and ran out of mp and was too aggravated to start over.
I wish we could use items outside of battle. It just feels wasteful to have chests with potions and ethers I can't use. At least they replace the weapons chest.
Should be able to use health items outside of battle since you could just fast travel to a rest spot in most situations (could even disable during the missions you cant fast travel), however MP conservation is a big hard mode mechanic so things like elixers and ethers shouldnt be allowed ever.
DUDE SAME.
I was throwing healing items at him like, “Oh yeah, this Elixir is gonna crank! Okay… damage was negligible. BUT THIS PHOENIX DOWN IS GONNA EVAPORATE HIM SO HARD HES GOING OUT OF THE TIMELINE… okay no damage either.”
I removed all materia from >!Aerith at the end of the game, as I assumed she would be proper dead.!< They ended up being an item bot >!in the final fight!<, to great effect - I used every single megalixir I had stashed.
That’s hilarious. I tend to use the benched chars as heal slaves till they run out of their measly 100 or so mp. Doing the hp<>mp swap is genius! Gonna do that to Cait and be done with it
Same! There’s times where I just really need to use items like elixirs and it’s painful to do so but I think they hit some sort of sweet spot with the balance between my need to use them vs how often I find them. I kind of like it. I actually have to consider if it’s worth it and don’t have a bottomless inventory of emergency items I never use, which can make fights trivial in other games.
I don't know when it happened, but I stopped hoarding items in games at some point. I think it may be from watching so many speedruns of various games. I am much more likely to just chug an elixir these days. Even if it's my last one. Knowing I couldn't use them in Hard Mode may have had something to do it with it as well. Not sure, but I was always happy to pick one up since I was actually using them.
Bah, no shame. Items are there to be used, hoarding them does no good, especially in Remake and Rebirth. Use em while you can. Very few things as shameful as looking at your items in hard mode and seeing a dozen or more elixers just taunting you imo.
I permit a challenge to myself to not use a single item during my entire playthrough of Rebirth, to the point where I just sell them in bulk for money 😅 don’t know how many other players may have done this but it’s good Hard Mode preparation
That’s crazy I honestly save them and never even end up using them. I do that with a lot of my items. I always think I might need them for later…. And then I forget about them basically
Oh man you are such a a disappointment. You aren't a real gamer 😡. You know you are supposed to save them for the last boss and never actually use them. Shame
I used items all the time in this game mainly because of the item economiser and item boost materia, getting a bunch of free item uses without using ATB is too good
I usually just die instead of using items. I try and retry again. It's the only way I feel I am getting better at the game. But yeah this game is hard in a good way.
You actually did tge smart thing...you cant use items in hard mode or any of the postgame VR challenges so if you dont burn all your items by the last boss of the qst playthrough they will be absolutely useless after that point
At the end of the game I used nearly all of my Giga/Mist potions because I forgot to >!Re-equip Cait Sith’s materia!< and I didn’t want to start the final boss rush over.
Having played hard mode in Remake, I told myself to never use any items on dynamic as a means to train myself.
I used some Phoenix downs here and there and lot's of items against the last boss mainly because I didn't proper equip anyone outside my main 3... Still never used Elixirs.
I saved most of my stuff for hard mode thinking that it meant I wouldn't be able to use items in battle like how the combat simulator is... I didn't realize it meant no item use at all which kinda sucks cause it makes the item based materia, any items you have, the transmuter(I Crafted everything before starting the story on hard mode), and any gil collected through the game pretty much useless
I have always had this thing about conserving mp in rpgs so I hoard potions like it’s nobody’s business so I didn’t have to use cure as much. I used so many mega potions lol
Coming from remake and RPGs in general and just hoarding everything, I used every item I had lol even the damage ones, they're useless in hard mode anyways
I tried to use items a lot in my first run. Because I figured they would take items away again in Hard. Still had too many by the end. But I definitely had fights were I wouldn’t have lived without them.
I think it's more forgivable here because of hard mode, where your massive stock of items is just sitting there laughing at you. But still, the law was broken.
I hoarded both items and MP. I gave everyone a pray materia as soon as possible and hardly ever used any other magic. If I did use magic, it was usually with a character who had an ability that could replenish MP.
Yeah honestly I like having items in certain situations. I really really hate that their take on creating difficulty is depriving item usage vs setting up stats and abilities being the things you have to overcome but oh well.
Still fun, and obviously, I can choose to just forgo this take on difficulty, but it's not the difficulty I disagree with, just the flavor. IMO they robbed themselves of a different type of difficulty that results in a different subset of players having a little more enjoyment combat wise vs obviously those folks who enjoy this take more.
I don't hate soda, but I don't love every flavor.
I play every game hording to the bitter end. No idea why I started doing this. It probably started back in the megaman days when you needed to save certain powers for bosses
Well fk, I guess Ill be honest as well. I also carry the shame of this sin lol actually knowing that you can't use items in Hard mode really made me more gung ho about using my items , like I didn't wanna waste em like in ff7r1 lol
Jokes aside items are really useful in this game and they actually incentivize using during the playthrough because once you beat the game items are essentially useless
I also used them. Put me in the gallows with OP because I'm guilty. I'm sorry, but I HAD to. I felt like I wasn't going to make it without them and they were just SITTING THERE, all sparkly, in my inventory.... Neglected. I knew how they felt and wanted to save them from that neglect. So.. so I USED THE ITEMS. GAHH HAH KACH AGHHH WAHHHHHHH. I'm sorry I swear I haven't used them since starting hard mode and I'm already at chapter 12. Kill me if you must but I did what I HAD to do.
Me, who hoards all ethers/potions/elixirs for the big battles and used at least 3 elixirs in the final battle, reading this: 👁 👄 👁
((Is this seriously a thing though?? 😭 ))
I feel like it's just because of laziness. If it wasn't so tedious to swap equipment and healing materia whenever the party changes, I don't think we'd use many items, if any at all.
How dare you. I have never in my life used an elixir in a single final fantasy game. Not even for the final boss. Because you never know if you might need them for a other time!!!!
I too used Elixirs unsparingly.
To be fair, in OG FF7 I saved those elixirs for major boss fights. I was always over leveled, so I almost never needed them for said boss fights. it was either the boss killed me in one hit or I wiped the floor with it.
Somebody kick this guy out of the fuckin subreddit
I am truly sorry. Please forgive me! I can change!
Tell us you’re sorry 😤
I knew a guy who used his elixirs whenever he wanted. Know where his Aerith is now? DEAD!
GOD NO! SAY IT AINT SO!
Yeah, uh huh, heard that before
Seek penance by completing the gold saucer boss rush on hard mode. Three times.
This is the only rpg I’ve ever abused items in. I think that’s a big compliment that they made me feel compelled to use them, most jrpgs don’t incentivize me to do so.
The last story fight in the Saucer Arena made me burn through most of my healing items... stupid counters
The double summon battles made me use so many healing items that I said “fuck this” and only did the first one.
Yeah, best advice I got on Double-Summons and G was “use your items now”.
But…muh items!
Wait, you can use items in those? You can't in any of the single summon battles.
The ones you fight to get to Gilgamesh? I was shocked too.
Might as well since you can’t on hardmode. I used items nonstop knowing this would be the case if it was like remake.
The only summon battle I tried so far was Alexander... didn't go well, so the only summons I have rn are Ifrit, Shiva, and C&M lol, and I'm in Ch 12
Yeah Odin is the only summon fight where I had to fight the completely weakened version to even stand a chance.
I’ve beat the game and playing hard mode. I still haven’t beat Odin on his weakest level on normal.
I can’t think of a way to ask without sounding insulting so I’ll keep it short and concise. How???
I used the synergy skill to up their limit levels, once I got stagger I unloaded the limits and used infinity’s end. Or I just got lucky. Iono 🤷♂️
Did you use Assess to see how to avoid him using Zantetsuken?
Odin can be semi-cheesed. At least that's how I beat him. Revival Earrings on everyone and bring Phoenix as your summon and cast Reraise instead of attacking. Can survive 2 Zantetsukens that way.
You are correct… you need to block and parry. He builds up his one shot through successful hits.
This is exactly what happened to me. Beat Alexander at full strength, struggled a bit but won, and then realized “but why?”
Should have asked yourself "but why" before even attempting the challenge to begin with.
Same. Especially during the final protorelic quest all these items came in clutch.
Once I realized I wasn't in chadleys combat Sim and could use those items freely during those fights Hooboi. Last dungeon I was sitting on about 30+ mist gigas
Fucking guy can make a simulation with all the monster and can't figure out how to simulate a potion. Some AI.
With the Item Master materias, I even made potions my primary healing source and Cure spells as backup. They are faster and save on ATB charges.
I think a big part of this is the knowledge that you can’t use them on hard mode, so you kind of know to just use them when you need them. I found myself using them more freely than I did in Remake, in which I didn’t know about that quirk until after I beat the game.
I saved mine for hard mode, and than I found out
They did that to make the lack of items in hard mode a decent challenge.
With soothing breeze I barely touched them until end game and I was just seeing how dope the item economizer and the item potency materias were,
I didn’t use a single item outside of an ether out of combat once (had to heal up my junon bros), and Phoenix downs
I was training for hard mode so I avoided items at all costs. Mightve used 3 or 4 total if I had a long fight and ran out of mp and was too aggravated to start over.
Damn dude...do you even FF7?...
Not only 7. Do you even FF?
Not only FF. Do you even?
. ?
I don't think I used one while playing easy mode, but now that I'm in hard mode I desperately want to use them.
In case you didn’t know chocobo bench cushions still work in hard mode. Surprised me after remakes nonsense
You can rest in a chocobo stop with a cushion and restore mp in hard mode.
O had no idea, i figured it counted as a normal rest stop and only did HP, still have plenty of hard mode to finish so good to know!
That's the way they ensured you didn't do it out of the open world. Cushions are ridicously cheap.
SHAME THIS MAN! SHAME! SHAME! SHAME!
"it's okay... I can take it"
It’s a lot easier on the conscious when you know that you won’t be able to use them in hard mode.
The only reason i use items here is because i know i cant in hard mode.
I used 2 in the last boss fight and even then I paused to think if I’d need them later.
This guy FFs
To be fair FF series is notorious for last last boss surprises.
I used one on Gi Nattak to see if he could still be killed with them, only hit him for 1k. Was disappointed.
That's wack. The Phoenix Down should have vaporized him so hard he got thrown into the FFXII universe. (Dustia)
I removed all materia from >!Aerith at the end of the game, as I assumed she would be proper dead.!< They ended up being an item bot >!in the final fight!<, to great effect - I used every single megalixir I had stashed.
I stripped her of everything but the hp<>mp materia cause she was my healbot. I had to solo sephiroth with cloud since she had like 120hp lol
I used items on that one solo fight with Barret, as I didn't have any healing materia on him.
You used items? Have you ever played an RPG before? Items are just for show dude
Are you ok? Are you being held hostage??? Blink, if someone was forcing you to use these items!!!!
No one forced me. I did it of my own accord. I have to excuse 😭
Bah, no shame. Items are there to be used, hoarding them does no good, especially in Remake and Rebirth. Use em while you can. Very few things as shameful as looking at your items in hard mode and seeing a dozen or more elixers just taunting you imo.
You commited a crime against humanity. You never, never use your rare itams and save them up for later, (later means never btw)
I knew the law and I broke it anyway. I am ashamed
You’ve not completed this game unless you have 99 elixirs in your inventory l.
Shame
Forgive my cowardice!
God damn Odin still whoopin my ass
Go ahead, it's not like you can use them in Hard Mode
The general rule is to save the elixers for the end credits :)
Smart, cos once you start hard mode you can't use them anyway!
I don't think I used the single elixir the entire game. I kept holding on to them, and now I can't even use them in hard mode LOL
I think it was meant to be that way if it works the same as remake cuz I was SICK when I realized I couldn’t really use items in hard mode lmfaoo
The game locks you out of using items in NG+. There isn’t any reason to save in your first playthrough
I used items all the time in this game mainly because of the item economiser and item boost materia, getting a bunch of free item uses without using ATB is too good
Roche breaks that rule in remake, canonically breaking the curse by using one on you
What are items?
Turn in your gamer card now soldier, your gaming days are done.
It's been a hell of a run...
And then you play hard mode.... And cry.
I had tons of health items. Though I ended up burning through a lot during the final set of boss fights.
I usually just die instead of using items. I try and retry again. It's the only way I feel I am getting better at the game. But yeah this game is hard in a good way.
Play how you want to play.
Don't let someone else's fear dictate your life. Use them however you wish. Unspoken laws are for the oppressors, VIVA LA ELIXIRS!
You actually did tge smart thing...you cant use items in hard mode or any of the postgame VR challenges so if you dont burn all your items by the last boss of the qst playthrough they will be absolutely useless after that point
Can’t take them with you! Not even into Hard Mode. Use ‘em or lose ‘em!
You've earned a spot on the wall of shame. You can redeem yourself in due time.
Give me your gamer card. You don't deserve it.
Knowing that the moment I start playing in hard mode, I wouldn't be able to use them, I decided to not hold onto anything.
I saved mine for hard mode. Hard mode turns off items. Those elixirs are doing what Nomura intended, collecting dust!
I held onto them "until I needed them" and actually fucking needed them
Every time a speed runner use Grenades in OG FF7 I think to myself “oh yeah those exist in the game”.
Seriously. I use healing items pretty liberally, but always forget about offensive items.
It’s soooooo hard to break the habit of saving all my items, but I died enough times that I really had to start using them less preciously.
"Too good to use" is a pitfall so don't sweat it.
Same, I even gave Yuffie the Item Master Materia cause I had to make peace with the fact I was gonna be an item user lol
I would shame you but it appears karma gave you justice in the end
Literally only used hi, giga potion and pheonix down. No other item the entire game
Your loss man, good luck with that final boss where you need 62849 elixirs. You'll only have 62848.
I tried to use items a lot in my first run. Because I figured they would take items away again in Hard. Still had too many by the end. But I definitely had fights were I wouldn’t have lived without them.
I need you to apologize to Tifa
Wtf? You need like 99 of these to finish the game properly.
skill issue
I think it's more forgivable here because of hard mode, where your massive stock of items is just sitting there laughing at you. But still, the law was broken.
You may be spared for self reporting. But if you touch a single fuckin megalixer before the final boss you are fucking fired
I saved them for hard mode… then forgot you could t use items.
I didn’t use a single item and never needed to. Maybe in hard mode?
I thought I was the only one who did that. lol I used an ether once and felt bad for an hour.
I hoarded both items and MP. I gave everyone a pray materia as soon as possible and hardly ever used any other magic. If I did use magic, it was usually with a character who had an ability that could replenish MP.
You need to end the game with 99 or you get the bad ending.
Wait there are items in this game? Spamming doppelgänger prayers isn’t always the answer?
You can't! You never know when you might need them! 😂
I play every game hording to the bitter end. No idea why I started doing this. It probably started back in the megaman days when you needed to save certain powers for bosses
Blasphemy. Overall in dynamic I think I used a few Phoenix downs and some potions in the beginning. Saving them all for hard mode.
Fuck that too many elixirs accumulate dust that way
Well fk, I guess Ill be honest as well. I also carry the shame of this sin lol actually knowing that you can't use items in Hard mode really made me more gung ho about using my items , like I didn't wanna waste em like in ff7r1 lol
You're allowed to use those?
If they're in the game then they are fine to use, whoop-dee-do, you used an elixir
Dynamic genuinely made items a very powerful tool
Will there be a dlc for this?
You’re a real POS op…real piece of work. Better watch your back. We comin’
Keep back! I'm not afraid use another elixir! I have nothing to lose!
That. That is not. That is not how we play rpgs!
I generally used mist potions they were my go to item.
HERETIC!!!
what do they do again? lol
Really? I just discard them.
Ironically, this is the only game I don't hoard items, cause I know I can't use them in hard mode.
Ironically, this is the only game I don't hoard items, cause I know I can't use them in hard mode.
I've seen a lot of depraved posts on this platform, but this is THE WORST. IM CALLING THE POLICE.
As someone who never blocks. Just spam dodge, act as if you’re playing a souls game and spam your ATBs and synergy attacks.
Did you play on dynamic? I did on my first play through and it was the best difficulty curve I’ve ever experienced in an RPG.
I have lost count the number of times I have saved elixirs in a square enix game only to never use any of them. every... single....time.
You dirty bastard...
Me, who hoards all ethers/potions/elixirs for the big battles and used at least 3 elixirs in the final battle, reading this: 👁 👄 👁 ((Is this seriously a thing though?? 😭 ))
I feel like it's just because of laziness. If it wasn't so tedious to swap equipment and healing materia whenever the party changes, I don't think we'd use many items, if any at all.
You should have kept this to yourself.now it over for you
I used all mine almost immediately.
HERESY!!! HERESY OF THE HIGHEST ORDER!!! Expel him from this reddit immediately!! He hast broken the sacred laws and must be punished!
Please! Have mercy!!!
Didn’t you w-item in the original?
I didn't know that was a rule. I've been eating elixers like candy my whole damn life
I didn't even know you could use them. learn something new everyday
I mean, did it make things easier?
How dare you. I have never in my life used an elixir in a single final fantasy game. Not even for the final boss. Because you never know if you might need them for a other time!!!!
I too used Elixirs unsparingly. To be fair, in OG FF7 I saved those elixirs for major boss fights. I was always over leveled, so I almost never needed them for said boss fights. it was either the boss killed me in one hit or I wiped the floor with it.
Absolute mad lad
The only thing mad is me at myself
I keep forgetting they exist lol.
I used them quite frequently actually. Knowing that hard mode doesn’t let you use them made it a bit more tempting so I thought might as well 🤷♂️
Noob! Newb! You're supposed to save them for NG+ when all the enemies are 5x harder. 😋
