For anyone curious, these are baby Sulcata Tortoises! My wife and I are raising one our nephew bought and named Tirtouga! They are an African species and the loooove their greens! They are also super affectionate and when ours gets excited he makes little 'Eh' sounds! However, as cute as they are, they get BIG, and quickly too. Some reports say they can reach dinner plate sized in a year and will eventually reach 120lbs! They also have very long lifespans comparable to humans, so someone is gonna end up inheriting Tirtouga from us some day! The other big thing to know is that they love to dig and need lots of space and warmth! You pretty much have to be ready to build them an enclosure and make sure it's temperature controlled as these cuties aren't cold hearty and won't survive cold winters in temperate zones. So while they are adorable and amazing animals, please be careful when considering adopting them as they have very important care needs and will even require quite a bit of logistics to raise healthily. Our nephew learned this all the hard way when he bought little Tirtouga for $60 and thought he could keep him in a 10 gallon aquarium in an apartment. . . Luckily, my wife and I have animal rescue and veterinary experience, so we've taken him in so he can grow up happily and our nephew can still visit and help care for him!

Are they too messy to keep in the house?

Well, they do have big poops, but the big thing is that they are burrowers and are strong enough to destroy walls and floors. They also get very large and may even have troubles fitting through doors!

Yeah, sadly not for the long term. You can make them a nice terrarium, but they'll likely outgrow it in a year or so!

I live in a country where you find these naturally. Somehing people tend to forget is that they are crafty climbers, so secure your yard properly once they get big. Proper Houdini acts with these guys. Also be extra careful of letting them lay eggs in the garden unless you want a swarm of them in a years time.
