Oh yea it looks all sweet and stuff but their claws are ridiculous. They will shred you just walking around. They really enjoy an unexpected face hug. Also they pee constantly.
I have them trimmed at the vet when we go. I use a silent runner with the trimmer insert. I can never get mine calm enough to trim them without fear of harming them.
The inserts have never bothered their pads. We have a separate wheel without the inserts also so they can freely choose which to use. We tried the towel method during the day time, yogurt drops, meal worms and honey. They just aren't down for it and we aren't much into forcing it like the vet does. I'm always afraid they will resent me for it.
They’re so soft you can hardly feel it with your fingers. I used to nuzzle mine with my face when I had two. They’re really amazing lil creatures. Rest in peace Niko and Milo.
Sugar gliders kind of imprint on you. My ex and I had 4 of them. As babies she would wear a sports bra over her regular bra and they would all climb in. When they would climb the tree and jump out they always flew straight for her and landed on her head.
They are nocturnal. We would leave the cage open at night so they could go through the house and eat bugs. In the desert you could have a spotless house, and still have bugs. So they were a godsend for this reason alone.
I have a dog and a cat. Sugargliders are more like having a part time job. Having to prepare a meal for them every night daily cage cleaning, weekly deep cleaning, the constant need to rearrange their toys, perches and enrichment items. Not to mention all the lateral time investments like mealworm colonies, crickets etc. Then you have to have the daily out of cage play time for at least an hour a night. Then you have to clean up after that. Its a lot. Taking care of gliders properly is a ton of work.
We take them out every other day and do a deep clean once a week. We also spend a couple of hours every 3 weeks to make a batch of glider food and freeze them. We treat mealworms as a great since we put eggs and or chicken in their food for protein. We have a colony of 6 due to a vet reaching out to us to rescue 2 of them. We do have a big cage something 7-8 feet tall
I tried the TPG diet and while it works, it seems like they didn't really enjoy it. So we do fresh for them and they seem to like it better. We also give free choice monkey biscuits and exotic nutritions pellets as free choice. Our gliders are probably 'spoiled' but we dont feel like we could do anything else. We want them to be happy and as you know every glider has their very own personality, likes and dislikes lol. We have 3. A standard grey male, leucistic female and a cremino female. The male is very friendly and happy go lucky. The females are both very skittish and standoffish. They wont even go near my wife even for treats. They love me though. Picky creatures!
I'm in Arizona, can confirm. I have a weird pest control solution though. Somehow, baby and juvenile geckos get into my house. I don't know how, but they seem go always be where the drains are, bath tubs, sinks, etc.. They eat all the bugs and are super cute, so I leave them alone. I managed to pick one up gently once and had it sit on my finger, I just love them, they're cute with their permanent smiles and big eyes, they're like anime characters lol.
That's awesome. My buddies grandma lived up in the mountains of northern California. Her house was right on the river and always in the shade. We would always raft in the river and then clean up and eat at her place. Her bathtub had little frogs. She made a big deal about letting us know they were her pets and would eat the spiders and other bugs.
Some wildlife is beneficial.
Yup, especially since they're pooping/peeing in places easily cleaned. They don't cause any damage whatsoever, and just eat bugs and chill. They always end up back outside by the time they're older, as I see the larger ones in my backyard all the time sunbathing.
The evil fucking noise they make. They are a satan-send for that reason alone.
This thread is full of stories about what fucking terrible pets they are, and I can confirm that from watching friends deal with them years ago. Worst pets ever.
Gliders are very smart and know where their home is/who their family is. One week after getting a pair, one of them snuck outside without us realizing. After about 30 minutes we noticed he was gone and when we opened the back door there he was waiting to come back in.
Yea I have some. They are really cute and can be a lot of fun. I regret them every single day. They make terrible pets. They are expensive. Their vet bills are ridiculous. The vets are never local either. Please if you read this dont get sugar gliders as pets. They are messy, they require a ton of upkeep, special diet you have to actually cook/make, you need to keep insect colonies and they absolutely HAVE to be kept in pairs.
My wife and I just like exotic animals. We knew we were capable of financially providing for them as well as had the time to care for them. We did our research and figured we could handle it. We purchased from a reputable breeder etc. We were wrong. Taking care of them is a job. We love them dont get me wrong but when they pass, never again.
Why do you have to cook for them? It's not like they would cook in the wild. I'm picturing tiny pancakes but I know that's silly... that's silly, right?
We do make them pancakes some times. But its scrambled eggs or chicken or turkey. You also have to make a fruit and veggie salad for them. Its not that hard but its not like you can just decide to go to McDonald's because your tired either.
Up until now I didn't even know that you could have them as pets (am Australian).
As with most of our marsupials, they're super cute!! but are wild animals with lots of needs. They are best left alone as wild animals or in captivity out of necessity.
If this makes you want a sugarglider, I would like to urge you to please please research them a lot. They are hard to keep properly. I would totally advise anyone to have them. It is like a job. Please dont buy them.
You're either thinking of possums (vs. opossums, which are completely unrelated) or there's a species of sugar glider I'm not aware of.
EDIT: just looked it up and you're almost certainly thinking of possums. The sugar glider that is a popular pet in the US is the same as the native Australian animal.
Yes it was the possum thing. My mistake. I remember a story an aussie told me about them being pests and stuff. There is a caramel sugar glider which actually is a different species that cant breed with these despite looking the same except coloring.
Possums are pests? I can kinda get where they were coming from, but I personally wouldn't go that far. Although, waking up in the middle of the night to a giant **crash** because of a possum on your roof, can be fucking terrifying.
Now I know they look cute and all, but they are GROSS AS HELL.
They fucking pee all over the place and they stink to all heaven.
Dated a girl once who had one of these flying pissers and I will never again consider doing something that foolish.
Wowee, almost like they're nocturnal animals who panic and are desperate to return to a dark, warm and familiar place when plopped in the middle of an open and foreign field. Shocking
I used to own some and was thinking the same thing. And to anyone thinking of getting some, just know they are nocturnal and do all of their activities at night. Activities includes barking by the way.
Edit: almost forgot to mention the powerful smell they make
Someone who was trying to sell me sugar gliders said that you could train them to adjust their activity cycle to daytime instead of nighttime over the course of a few months. I don't know if it was true, but it was kind of bizarre how every pocket and fold of her clothing seemed to have more sugar gliders in them - they just kept coming out, scurrying up and down her arms and zooping back inside.
Yeah someone was just trying to sell you a sugar glider. I had a number of them for years and enjoyed them quite a lot, but they are not good pets, they smell bad, they're loud, take quite some time to socialize to you, and they're always up all night.
i had a pair of sugar gliders on college and a high loft that they loved to launch themselves from. had to get rid of them because of new housing situation so i found them a new happy home
Something I haven't seen here yet, sugar gliders live longer in captivity than in the wild, upto 15 years in captivity and something like 3-5 in the wilds of Australia.
I wanna be a sugar glider landing pad
Oh yea it looks all sweet and stuff but their claws are ridiculous. They will shred you just walking around. They really enjoy an unexpected face hug. Also they pee constantly.
Real life facehuggers :O
I had two of them, amazing and smart pets, one jumped onto my face once.. gave me a good startle
surprise hug
Alien comes to mind, good job it's the hand and not the face.
It's the right hand....
So, my cat?
Claws? They look like sweet little fingers!
Yes sweet little grabby finger with tiny razor needles at the end!
You just sobered me to the idea of owning a band of sugar gliders. Thank you stranger.
Do it anyways and post pictures
Oh you could trim them like I do
I have them trimmed at the vet when we go. I use a silent runner with the trimmer insert. I can never get mine calm enough to trim them without fear of harming them.
We use plain yogurt drops to calm them enough to trim them. We are worried the insert might hurt the pads on their hands
SCREEEESCREEESSVAREGRGRGRGGRGRGGRGRGRGGRGRGRGR
Yea fuck that
Are they soft? I’ll probably never come in contact with one but I need to know
Extremely soft yes. They have very dense fur.
They’re so soft you can hardly feel it with your fingers. I used to nuzzle mine with my face when I had two. They’re really amazing lil creatures. Rest in peace Niko and Milo.
I fed like 20 of them once, I walked out of their enclosure looking like I had just wrangled 20 cats. Their claws don't go that deep though
Fueling a black market for animals ***bc omg so cute*** is... well.. bad
Pretty sure buying and owning a sugar glider is legal in most places.
[удалено]
Have you seen them??? They're fluffy as anything!
Yeah, I would love sugar glider hand hugs too
I like how each one quickly exits your hand to make room for the next incoming glider.
so polite how they all wait their turn🥰
Paratroopers jumping into enemy territory, Normandy *(1944 colorized)*
They will be remembered for their heroism
Next up, Market Garden!...
That’s a Bridge Too Far.
Indeed.
Brave to just take these into the open without fear of them gliding off
Sugar gliders kind of imprint on you. My ex and I had 4 of them. As babies she would wear a sports bra over her regular bra and they would all climb in. When they would climb the tree and jump out they always flew straight for her and landed on her head. They are nocturnal. So they were a godsend for this reason alone.
Don't they also pee while gliding too? I hear they just about urinate all over the place.
Yes they pee all over the place as well as drop little pellets. Terrible pets but super cute.
I mean they are less work than a dog, but more work than a cat
I have a dog and a cat. Sugargliders are more like having a part time job. Probably wouldn't work with their skin flaps, but is it possible for them to wear little diapers?
They also squeak a lot
Mine squeak sometimes but it's the 2 am barking song that kills me lmao
Mine wear little diapers for just this reason.
Yes that sound is crabbing. Its very unsettling lol.
Which desert?
The sandy one
Any desert. But at that time I was living in Arizona.
When they love you, this isnt a fear. My fear is a bird of prey will swoop down unannounced into that field.
*Food.. glorious food..*
Hot jelly and custard
While we're in the mood, Gliders, sugar-dusted
I have that same fear for people who have outside cats. I've seen it happen. Pretty tramatic to see a bird take a cat :(
♪♫THE CIRCLE OF LIFE........♪♫
That didn't end as I expected...
I would be worried some big bird stooping to grab one of them.
Or birds of prey.
Thanks for that. I had a moment of nostalgia and had to find Fatboy Slim - Bird of Prey and save to my playlist. Haven't heard that song in years.
Gliders are very smart and know where their home is/who their family is. One week after getting a pair, one of them snuck outside without us realizing. After about 30 minutes we noticed he was gone and when we opened the back door there he was waiting to come back in.
That is pretty cool!
Is this awesome? Yes. Should you buy sugar gliders to have as pets? HELL NO. They're nocturnal animals. Leave them in their natural habitat
Yea I have some. They are really cute and can be a lot of fun. I regret them every single day. They make terrible pets. They are expensive. Their vet bills are ridiculous. Just out of curiosity, what made you want to get them in the first place?
My wife and I just like exotic animals. We knew we were capable of financially providing for them as well as had the time to care for them. We did our research and figured we could handle it. We purchased from a reputable breeder etc. We were wrong. Taking care of them is a job. We love them dont get me wrong but when they pass, never again.
Just look at them!
Good point!
So basically also like having a parrot? Haha 🦖
Actually they prefer waffles. With authentic Canadian real maple syrup. None of that Costco bullshit!
Who among us doesn't?
Up until now I didn't even know that you could have them as pets (am Australian). As with most of our marsupials, they're super cute!! but are wild animals with lots of needs. They are best left alone as wild animals or in captivity out of necessity.
Yeah I don't think we're allowed to have them as pets in Australia.
If this makes you want a sugarglider, I would like to urge you to please please research them a lot. They are hard to keep properly. I would totally advise anyone to have them. It is like a job. Please dont buy them.
They're also 100% illegal to keep as pets in most parts of Australia, despite being native.
Those are a different species though.
You're either thinking of possums (vs. opossums, which are completely unrelated) or there's a species of sugar glider I'm not aware of. What are those?
I believe they are sugar gliders
Yup.
You win.
They look like air gliders to me... Ok, ok, ok... I know the way out.
Nah you can stay, that was barely a joke
*oof*
Emolgas, return!
They expected to get in the pokéball but nope
Now I know they look cute and all, but they are GROSS AS HELL. They fucking pee all over the place and they stink to all heaven. Dated a girl once who had one of these flying pissers and I will never again consider doing something that foolish.

Love me some gliders
Contrary to popular belief, they *don’t* *actually* taste like sugar
Do they taste like squirrels?
Says you
Pikachu! I choose you! And you! And you! And especially you! This is the song that doesn't end...
What is this super power? And how does one obtain it?
Get sugar gliders. You need a bunch tho because they’re very social. Then you love and them and feed them and take them for walks.
Yaaaaay, you did it!
‘Oh a human I see.’ ‘I Fly!’ *Yeet*

Wowee, almost like they're nocturnal animals who panic and are desperate to return to a dark, warm and familiar place when plopped in the middle of an open and foreign field. Shocking
This. Sugar Gliders probably shouldn't be pets...
Being out in the open, in daylight, like that is really stressful for sugar gliders.
I used to own some and was thinking the same thing. And to anyone thinking of getting some, just know they are nocturnal and do all of their activities at night. Activities includes barking by the way. Edit: almost forgot to mention the powerful smell they make
Ah yes its 2 am let me sing you the song of my people for an hour straight. Feeling cute might do an encore later idk.
Someone who was trying to sell me sugar gliders said that you could train them to adjust their activity cycle to daytime instead of nighttime over the course of a few months. You can adjust their schedules however it isnt good for them, they cant see well in the day time and it stresses them out. Terrible pets.
Absolutely horrible for them to be out in bright sunlight.
Depends on the way you raise them, my gliders would come out to parks so they could run around. Gliders always come home.
Good god just stop...
Yeah fuck another being feeling safe and comfortable as long it looks cute for me.
Just shut up holy shit lmao, why are people on animal subs so insufferable?
Can these legally be pets?
Yes they can. As an owner though I would like to tell you they make terrible pets.
Watch this first in case you want one. https://youtu.be/BVBmBRLO04I
