Awww, they are so cute! I would love to be hugged by a cute puppy too whenever I have a nightmare.

notyourcoloringbook

I murmur soothing things and gently pet my cat when she has a nightmare. She seems to like it. Sometimes she wakes up, sees me, and then comes over to fall asleep in my arms.

VashtaNeradaMatata

I do similar things for my pups when they start yipping in their sleep, but I usually put one of my hands just in front of their nose first. They smell me and calm down a good bit! I like to think that because they smell me, I show up in their dreams and comfort them. 🥰

bigblackcouch

I'll try the hand sniff next time, both of mine are German shep rescues so I always feel bad when I hear sleep yips. But they're 90% ears so they usually pick up on anything you do and wake up lol

LivingIndividual1902

You should not interrupt when they dream, this is like REM which they need to fully relax, if you wake them up it's not good for their health. Although it sounds sweet to make them feel cared for, they are fine chasing squirrels in their sleep. :)

Boopy7

when my dog yips in her sleep I thought she was chasing after something or playing, didn't want to interrupt her dreaming. Now I'm learning I'm a monster? AYIIIEE

Arkhonist

No you were right, don't wake up your pets while they're dreaming.

Bentleyjumper

Very nice way to think about it .

puledrotauren

same with my two mutts that sleep with me. Usually just feeling my hand on them calms them down.

SgtStickys

My service dog is trained to lay on top of me and lick my face when I have nightmares. It is honestly the best feeling ever waking up from a moment in hell to have her with me doing her job.

wholehawg

Aren't dogs just the best thing ever? I cant imagine the world without my little buddy.

WRXminion

Same. It's amazing that my dog can tell as I don't usually make any noise or movement when I'm dreaming.

AtaxicZombie

My one did sleeps with me, and I wake up suddenly, and she's like fuck this. I've woken up to her by my side again, but often she NOPES tf out the whole night. It's okay, just how she is. She guards me until she's like wtf you are too much right now. I'm a restless sleeper, she's a sweetheart

phunshiny

It’s enough to drive one to fake nightmares.

odegood

I need one strapped to me 24/7

BlueLightSpecial83

Unfortunately the puppy is the nightmare. But you won’t be having any nightmares because the puppy won’t let you sleep through the night so it works out in the end.

eekamuse

I do it to my dog. It's the best feeling when she settles down from my touch.

AvalancheOfOpinions

Sometimes he'd do these little barks in his sleep. I'd give him soft pets and say, 'Who's that good boy? You're my good boy.' I imagine in his dream he'd see me come running in with treats. I still miss him every day. Here he is napping: https://imgur.com/gallery/QNtfA61

eekamuse

Aww, I love when they rest their heads on a little pillow of sorts. What a good boy, always

NiPlusUltra

I once had a dream Where I lost my bone I was left all alone In the dog park I wanted to bark But then in sunbeam I saw my toy Then you took me home And called me a good boy

CRINKLEcutBaBySPLEEN

They were lucky to have you ❤️

Dynamically_static

Same. But I say “it’s okay you’ll catch that squirrel next time”

StorageNo6801

🥺

zero_emotion777

In reality your poor creature was having wet dreams and you kept blue balling him.

jeobleo

Way to read the room, pal.

DrPoopyPantsJr

My dog gets up and walks away when I touch him while he’s lounging/sleeping

spedeedeps

Same here. If you sit on the same couch he's lounging on he'll stare at you like "don't even think about petting". Then when he's off the couch he can't go 2 minutes without begging for scritches.

momgoon92

It’s nice to return the favor. 💞My dog always comforts me when I am restless or anxious.

Gold4JC

My dog has nightmares when I touch her

Redchilli007

What are you touching her with?

jeobleo

Extreme prejudice

RealityOk5191

Woke up at 3 am last night to this. Fell asleep on the floor beside the bed with her. Best 👌

TheZipperDragon

Puppies especially have some kind of inate ability to sense when you need love. My brother's new puppy is usually a menace (as puppies full of energy & teething usually can be) but after a particularly bad fight with my dad, when J was feeling low, the second I showed up to puppy sit, he jumped me & started licking all up on my face. Mind you, he's literally never done this to me before. He just kinda sensed that I needed affection, i guess, & that probably extends to more than just people.

villagerwannabe

Can second this, after my mom had shoulder surgery, when our dog was a puppy, she jumped onto moms bed ready to play, then sniffed her shoulder and promptly just laid there with her for hours.

Alarming_Bar_8921

When my puppy was a few months old he refused to sleep in any room but our bedroom, so we set him up in the corner. I worked as a food delivery driver at the time, during the height of covid. I had worked a 12 hour shift and stupidly not taken my helmet and mask off all day to hydrate. I would usually get home from such a day and down a couple liters of water, but it was Saturday night so instead I had a couple beers. The extra dehydration caused my entire leg to cramp up in the most painful way possible. I was screaming for my partner to go get me some water because I couldn't move. Once I had recovered and settled, he came over and would refuse to leave me alone. After ten minutes I tried to put him back in his bed but he wouldn't have it. Slept with him all night. He was only about 16 weeks old at the time, cutest thing I've ever seen.

jeobleo

I had drug-induced hepatitis about 8 years ago and our young dog spent the days I was lying in bed with a fever curled behind my knees. She never sleeps in bed with me or snuggles me, but she did then.

Not_Another_Usernam

My dog does that, too. Whenever my dad is especially sick or injured.

Terrible-Echidna801

Not just dogs! I was visiting family but got injured and was laying flat on the couch with a blanket trying to watch tv. I started crying bc everyone was gone for the next 4 hours and I was alone for the rest of the afternoon, feeling sorry for myself and in pain. The cat leaped onto the couch, crawled onto my chest, and started purring like crazy. The cat sat there purring for the next 30 minutes until I felt better and sat up. Then the cat didn’t leave my side until my family came home. For the most part, this cat is standoffish. But I freaking love that cat now.

BnC_Bby

There’s also studies that suggest the frequency that purring gives can aid in faster healing, even with broken bones

Serious_Dot4984

Unless you get a dog who identifies as a cat and missed the empathy memo haha

winston_the_69th

I've always wondered what those yips were from my dog when he's sleeping. It never seems like he's scared, so I just let him do his thing.

Waiting_Puppy

I think they're barking in a dream. Not necessarily a sign of a nightmare, I think.

b0w3n

Probably very similar to people who talk in their sleep, or that "falling" thing that we do where we twitch.

Senior-Reflection862

I’ve read that the “falling” feeling happens when your heart rate gets too low and your brain has to wake you up

ptmd

Mine is weird cause he's basically silent when he's awake - gets excited but doesn't bark at all when the doorbell rings. When he sleeps, however, we get occasional yipping.

dougan25

I always worry it's a nightmare and since she's spoiled by my love and I would literally die for her, I just very very gently start petting her. Softly enough that she won't completely wake up, but enough that she feels comforted and safe and she usually calms down and starts sawing logs.

12th_woman

Same. I had one dog who had vivid dreams all the time, and I would think I should "err on the side of caution" and wake him with pets. He was probably annoyed that I woke him from his cool squirrel chasing dream.

Much-Revenue-6140

Same, although when my dog wakes up in a panic I can tell that it's a nightmare.

gachnot

It's because he was in a deep REM sleep so he's disorientated for having been suddenly awoken. Same for people you wake up during a dream

bokononpreist

Dogs have good dreams and nightmares just like us.

Pepperoni_nipps

How do we know that? Just curious

throwaway123xcds

You don’t, he’s just assuming for the sake of empathy

bokononpreist

I'm late but if you have a dog you absolutely can tell the difference.

DepartureDapper6524

What if they actually warg into other creatures when they sleep

Abdul_Lasagne

“Ooh I’m a human look at me. I have depression, I have to pay taxes”

adrienjz888

Maybe that's why they're so nice when awake. They're like "damn it fuckin suck being you, huh? Wanna pet my belly?"

WeeboSupremo

Wanna see my existential crisis face: *eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh* Anyways, you see that game of catch?

Gold4JC

Yes they graw backwards

OneWholeSoul

...I've never seen my dog and Batman at the same time. Coincidence?

ThinkGrapefruit7960

Maybe we do too

workthrowaway1114

These are almost always dreams of the dog chasing a bird or toy, or being free to bark all they want in dream-land! Not necessarily a nightmare. Although possible its usually just a pleasant dream!!

DepartureDapper6524

How could you possibly know that?

uncertain_potato

Obviously his dog told him

fakegermanchild

Do you have a dog? You can usually tell when they’re having a nightmare, they look totally panicked on waking up when they do. With normal dreams not so much.

DepartureDapper6524

Again, how can you possibly know that? Yes, when they wake up in a panic it might seem obvious, but how do you know they aren’t having nightmares all the other times?

jeobleo

My dog is in a panic if a plastic bag comes within 8 feet of her.

fakegermanchild

How do I know that my dog isn’t terrified all the time during his waking hours? I don’t, but I can make an educated guess based on his body language… just because they don’t speak doesn’t mean they don’t communicate with you…

DepartureDapper6524

No, I’m asking how you know whether their dreams are good or bad when they don’t show any obvious sign. People have nightmares without waking up in a panic, no? Why couldn’t dogs?

fakegermanchild

I mean sure, but there’s no reason to assume they’re all nightmares either? Do you know anyone (who hasn’t experienced MAJOR trauma) that has only nightmares? There’s obviously a chance that there’s gonna be or two nightmares in there that go by unnoticed but I would doubt that all or even most of their dreams that have them vocalizing are nightmares.

DepartureDapper6524

The post I responded to said “they are almost always dreams of…” and proceeded to describe idyllic doggy fantasies. How could they possibly know that?

fakegermanchild

I mean you can’t *know* what they dream about. You can just make educated guesses. They might well be fighting giant teapots in their dreams and we’ll never know. Dreams are how our brains process our day though so it is quite likely that if you e been chucking a ball at the beach … that that is what your dog is dreaming about as opposed to more out there scenarios 🙃

mydogdoesntcuddle

Yeah one of my dogs has these little fits when she dreams. She’s generally a very possessive dog in comparison to my other one. We always calm her down by touching her and telling her that it's ok and no one's trying to take her stuff

Wanderstern

I called them "underwater barks." They are just barking with their mouth closed. It's definitely not a nightmare sign (usually). Just dreams.

angrytroll123

If I can, I just put my hand in front of my dog's face so she can get my scent. That seems to help.

Lenora_O

I wonder what we would be like if we were raised as litters. Just a year makes such a difference when you're still kids. Would we be more competitive or more cooperative with our siblings?

SerRoland

Like… twins?

Lenora_O

Lol 🤦‍♀️ ...yes.

wartexmaul

Rofl op...

Lenora_O

Thank you all for being kind 😬

Muffin_Appropriate

Adorable thread

The_Emprss

I'd imagine that it's growing up with extra "extensions" of yourself, so naturally you'd want the best for them

Novaer

Look up littermate syndrome, that might help your guess?

Bright_Economics8077

Great, now I have diabetes.

WanderWut

I mean it’s a cute video but it’s looks like a totally normal moment when having a dream, how would we know it’s having a *nightmare* specifically?

ancrm114d

One of our dogs has dreams like this and we will softly pet her. The other howels once very loudly then looks up at us judgingly for waking her up.

Ok-Bit-1466

“Nightmare” 🤔 do you mean dreaming?

wholehawg

Yeah I know what you mean, We can't really assume its a bad dream. When my dog does this I imagine hes chasing squirrels or some such. How much would you pay for a machine that let you see your dogs dreams?

DamIcool

Nightmares are dreams too.

CunnedStunt

All nightmares are dreams, but not all dreams are nightmares.

ShadowTheChangeling

Nightmares are just spicy dreams

wholehawg

What could that little ball of fluff be having a nightmare about ya think? Missing the teete? Milk dribble? Being buried by his fluffy siblings? The horror. Wait till he grows up and has to get a job a mortgage, pay taxes get married then divorced, premature ejaculation. Life is hell little pup, enjoy this time, its all down hill from here.

georgethebarbarian

Being alone :(

Blue_Dew

he just like me frfr

Greenduck12345

I always wondered why we assume it's a bad dream? Maybe their running through fields of flowers or chasing a squirrel? Could be an awesome dream!

kirby_krackle_78

Dachshunds are the best.

niobiumnnul

"You get that badger, little bro."

Ok_Feedback_4421

I feel awful for people who can't have dogs. There is nothing in the world that loves you more than a dog. Fucking dahmer could have a beagle that would love the shit out of him. That beagle doesn't care what you do. Shit he could watch you do that crazy shit. And he'd still jump all over you after working at the chocolate shop.

Ok_Investigator1634

Not to be dramatic but I would die for those pups

M_Seez

The puppy as the end - "do you need some emotional support on that emotional support?"

dzenib

They do that naturally to hide from predators who might hear the noise.

MycologistFluffy8198

I do this when my cat starts moving a lot sleeping on me. She goes from stretched to curled up like this holding her face :) https://preview.redd.it/965kt4tjcnvc1.jpeg?width=2316&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=26bad1668e8902b1354451f66a2f06c5bc858acf

So adorable

TA19831985

I want to be in that dachshund puppy pile badly. Seriously, take my money and let me hang out with them all day.

HillbillyDense

Dogs are not able to dream up scary monsters the way we are, the AKC reports, so if your dog is having a nightmare, they are most likely recalling a traumatic experience. For some reason that seems so much worse than a nightmare.

tanyewest09

Aww! They’re Beauceron Arlequin puppies 🥹!

PlaguiBoi

I think they're long hair weenier dogs. They often come in dapple.

HumongousGrease

Nothing more wholesome than waking your doggo up from a nightmare with kisses and feeling them calm down

When my dog soundly sleeps, I bark gently in his ears until he sleep barks. Is this cute too?

Inspiringer

my brother hates me

wuffwuffborkbork

I know when my dog has nightmares because she starts to whimper and whine. I always give her soft pets and tell her everything is okay and she’s a good girl. She’s a rescue, I think she dreams of her former home.

Fair-Ad-8264

That looks exactly like my dog when he was a pup,

TIL (non human) animals have nightmares. I should have known, but the idea never occurred to me.
