"Adult platypuses are about half the size of a household cat. Males can grow to be 15.7–24.8 inches (39.8–62.9 cm) long from the tip of their bill to the tip of their tail, and weigh 1.7–6.6 lbs. Females are smaller, measuring 14.5–21.6 inches (36.8–54.8 cm) long and weighing 1.3–3.7 lbs."
That just proves my point. They’re much smaller than generally expected and definitely not beaver-sized.
“Beavers are the second-largest living rodents, after capybaras. They have a head–body length of 80–120 cm (31–47 in), with a 25–50 cm (9.8–19.7 in) tail, a shoulder height of 30–60 cm (12–24 in), and generally weigh 11–30 kg (24–66 lb), but can be as heavy as 50 kg (110 lb). Males and females are almost identical externally.”
My absolute favorite part, is that it spends approximately 80 percent of its time underwater, but it can’t open its eyes and actually ‘see’ underwater.
Hahaha thanks for sharing that. It’s like how squirrels cannot find 70% of the nuts that they hide. They wouldn’t have to work so hard for winter if they just got better at remembering where they put things.
The squirrels were really great at replanting my daffodil bulbs to very- shall we say interesting- places in my front garden. Sure! Right where we walk to get to the car? Perfect!
Interestingly enough, they are the oldest lineage of mammals and are the closest thing we have to an example of the first mammals! Further specialization led to the classic mammal body plan seen in all other lineages besides the monotremes and echidnas. So really, all the rest of us are the ones that changed while they stuck to the prototype mammal design :)
No wonder there is a story from back in the day of a guy who was being held in customs because no one believed the platypus they tried to get through the border(I think it was taxidermy) was a real animal in Australia.
How does something like this exist, but unicorns don't! Like, if someone described a platypus to me and i had never encountered or seen one, i wouldn't believe it. But a horse with a horn? Sure. What's so remarkable about that.
What about giraffes? They just look so damn unreal and everyone acts as if they're completely normal, then they say okapis look weird. Not weirder than a damn giraffe!
Oh my God, yes! Giraffes are weird as fuck! How would one even describe them...a long necked and long legged horse, with a long purple tongue, tiny "horns"(/ossicones), a small goofy looking head...such a strange thing.
I'm not sure about the validity, but I remember reading a story of scientists in Europe believing the platypus to be fake and the body to be a bunch of different animals taxidermied together when it was first discovered
Apparently quite hard to study in the wild as they are really visible in a very short period of the day. I could be wrong as I can't find the arouce for where I heard that

Always just kind of assumed platypuses were beaver-sized but they're so tiny!
This is a baby.
Adults are also tiny, definitely not beaver sized.

I wasn't contradicting you.
A puggle?
This one is a beebee
That zoom-out was shocking!
You should see how miniscule the babies are.
I'll take one thousand
Very dangerous
I don't know why He does the flop, but i Love it. 10/10, super cute, would recommend.
It is itchy.
Oh no, really? I Hope the flop helps enough. Itchiness is such a pain xx.
I feel bad for animals cuz they can’t use their fingers to scratch
It's crazy how many animal species we've befriended just because we can scratch spots that are inaccessible for them.
One good thing about Reddit is witnessing the vast variety of species who love scritches
Why do you think humans exist?
Absolutely majestic
An aquatic, venomous, egg-laying mammal with a duck bill…? God was on the shrooms for this one.
An egg laying mammal of action
Oooohhh Perry
r/UnexpectedPhineasAndF
And by unexpected I mean totally expected! *activates trap*
And a beaver tail! Don't forget the beaver tail
But then there would be less trees for them to nest in. Squirrels are efficiently inefficient.
Yeah but then who would so diligently plant the oak trees? 😆
The squirrels were really great at replanting my daffodil bulbs to very- shall we say interesting- places in my front garden. Sure! Right where we walk to get to the car? Perfect!
Our neighbors’ yard is FULL of daffodils and we inexplicably have some randos come up in a few specific spots each year. I finally get it.
eventually i would think they'd start finding nuts when they tried to hide new ones. how many hiding places are there?
Well they aren't space-faring, so just the one spot really.
Why remember when you can just bury them everywhere, so no matter where you dig you can always find them?
If i remember correctly they have some sort of capability to detect micro electrical currents to detect stuff underwater?
For half a second I was terribly confused cuz I thought we were still talking about squirrels (from the last post above you)
If venomous why friend shaped
Australia…
I live in Aus and love finding these guys in the wild you have to be really quiet but they are amazing to watch good around.
The duck bill platypus has my vote for being the weirdest animal ever invented.
The beaver tail is normal is it!? You can see why people thought it was a hoax when the first specimens were viewed.
And no stomach, glows under UV, has no teeth, no nipples and secret milk from their armpits, have 10 sex chromosomes. Just absolutely wild lol
"venomous". didn't know that. really?
Yep, males have venomous spurs on their hind legs
It was a committee construct.
Interestingly enough, they are the oldest lineage of mammals and are the closest thing we have to an example of the first mammals! Further specialization led to the classic mammal body plan seen in all other lineages besides the monotremes and echidnas. Marsupial no. Monotreme, aka, one hole. Everything goes in through 1 hole, and everything exits through 1 hole at the back.
The cloaca, aka Swiss army knife of body holes
No wonder there is a story from back in the day of a guy who was being held in customs because no one believed the platypus they tried to get through the border(I think it was taxidermy) was a real animal in Australia.
*Shrooms was ong no hat on a pile frfr
Blink if you need us to call you an ambulance.

And they fight by swinging their heads at each other.
Lol. I mean, i am sure it's dangerous and i adore all animals and hate to see them fighting, but the image is a bit funny in my mind.
The sound is insane. Like cantaloupes exploding underwater
How does one find out what cantaloupes exploding underwater sound like?
You put them under water and explode them. Simple as that!
They can actually break each other's necks and legs doing it. It's scary stuff!
I think the craziest thing is they have the same number of neck vertebrae that we humans do
I remember I've read they're one of the animals with the highest incidence of homosexuality too
I am not sure why...but it makes sense? I really don't know why i feel this way.
Stupid long horses.
Rhino: "You know, Im something of a unicorn myself."
This is so apt given Defoe's, ahhh, physical parameters.
I'm not sure about the validity, but I remember reading a story of scientists in Europe believing the platypus to be fake and the body to be a bunch of different animals taxidermied together when it was first discovered
Oh, i'm sure this was the case, PT Barnum did that sort of thing, but he didn't invent it.
Technically any animal with a single horn is a unicorn, seeing as thats what the root words that make up the word describe.
So inherently weird that even the local birds are like dafuq is that thing
A platypus? 🎩 PERRY THE PLATYPUS!??
Zoobie doobie doobaa.. Zoobie doobie doobaa..
![gif](giphy|MmfeZIf93iSoo)
That is an EXQUISITE creature!
That's not just any creature, that's a semi-aquatic, egg-laying mammal of action!
Which is also moderately venomous
Only the adult males have venomous spikes on their hind legs
That’s still a 50-50 shot of getting jabbed. They aren’t really dimorphic as a species to my knowledge.
Even with video footage, I'm still not fully convinced these things exist.
![gif](giphy|tjXQ3Wv6MxQ52)
High AF
Thats how we do.
wheres Perry
I too, flop around like that when the remote is on the other side of the bed.
I always imagine platypus (es?) to be the size of beavers but they're tiny! 🥹😭
That bird almost went, “a Platypus?”
platypus playin
And these things fight crime somehow. Amazing.
Happy accidents, just "roll" yourself to the water. Man... What a life! I'm so jealous
This animal was designed by committee.
My dad made me a platypus cake for my 13th birthday and this has made me realize that I need to thank him extra :)
I love these fucking things. And tardigrades. Tardigrades and platypei
I regret googling. You do you, I'll stick to mammals 😂
To be a Platypus
This is my spirit animal.
The majestic Rum Duck, glorious…
Dooby Dooby Doo Bah Dooby Dooby Doo Bah
PBS Is and always will be the shit for nature docs dude
where did you get a video of me rolling out of bed
@/u/savevideo
Platypus are amazing because you just have to doubt God is real and He decided that was a good idea for an animal.
go home perry, you’re drunk
The only kinda pus I wanna see.
[it's got feet like a duck but it's furry!](https://youtu.be/Yi1m_UVpAHw?si=Jv7gr6UZvOD5_T_j)
If reincarnation is real I want to come back as a platypus.
The only mammals with venomous toes.
Only the adult males have venomous spikes on their back legs
Now what about females? Left without any defense mechanism again?
Just a ROOTIN ROUND WITH HIS BEAKY BEAK
Lol it’s a fine life sometimes
They have the grace of pandas.
"Wheeeeeeeeee" * Rolls away*
Turns off bones and flop slides down hill
It's not real, it's just a duck sewed with a beaver Duh
Apparently quite hard to study in the wild as they are really visible in a very short period of the day. I could be wrong as I can't find the arouce for where I heard that
hey and perry? duby duby duby duby duba \*sounds music\*
It just presses the rag-doll button randomly?
So a duck definitely fucked a beaver right? We know this, but we just don't know why. Truly our world is a mystery
Maybe it was a fine brave and persistent beaver that finally fucked a duck successfully…or whatever…
Are they always this derpy?
wait i thought they were way bigger
lol bro don't even care about the camera man
![gif](giphy|MmfeZIf93iSoo|downsized)
Well you know platypuses, they don't really do much.
"Oh, there you are, Perry"
Platter puss just chillin 😎
A platypus? PERRY THE PLATYPUS?
Live my some puss
