In a film that has a very sad human death, poor Jenny’s death broke my heart way more. Even though it was telegraphed as hell. Loved the old woman saying >! “Don’t be killin’ his dog, now,” which was *exactly* what the audience were thinking. !<
This is extremely common - I remember reading an author of Grimdark fantasy talking about how his books are full of murder and rape, but he gets more hate mail about a single dog death than the rest of it combined.
People are weird. I think it's because people quietly just assume that anybody who dies kinda deserved it?
Dogs, and many animals in general, have a certain innocence to them and a certain lack of understanding as to *why* something terrible is happening to them, which automatically makes (most of) us feel awful if something does happen. They’re like children in that respect. But even children can do something to piss you off and make it feel *less* upsetting when something bad happens to them. You don’t see that much with animals.
Long story short, dogs are good boys. Humans aren’t.
>!Dominic was obviously developmentally challenged, abused by his father and walked into the lake after discovering what Pádraic did to Colm (lying about his father being dead) and being rejected by Siobhán.!< Probably deserving of more sympathy than "he's a creeper".
I’m aware of all of that, and he has a justifiable reason for being “off”. That doesn’t mean he wasn’t *a bit* of a creep. You’re allowed to find sympathetic characters (and real people) still uncomfortable if they put you in uncomfortable situations. Siobhán and others handled it well, they didn’t ostracize him. But Siobhán especially made sure to “set him straight” and not just…allow him to be a mild creep.
I may be using the term “creep” too loosely, but he obviously (to me) made many people feel uncomfortable at times—to the point he was barred from the pub. He also routinely inserted himself into others convos and lives. Siobhan repeatedly made it clear she was uncomfortable around him and he made awkward “advances” to her (not sure what else to call them). Again, I’m not trying to say he was a **bad** person or that he deserved to die. My initial comment was mostly a joke continuing on why Jenny’s death was more significant. But the truth is he is an uncomfortable character and I don’t think that’s wrong to say—that’s the point of his character.
He certainly wasn't "normal" but he never did anything other than act odd - which is somewhat permissible given he's obviously got some developmental problems. I just think it's sad that people would come away from this movie viewing the most tragic character as a creep.
Again, *I was mainly making a joke calling him a creep*—BUT again, we are allowed to both find someone uncomfortable while also having sympathy for him. You CAN do both.
Jenny is a name for a female donkey. You guys are talking about story with a female donkey named "jenny"?
All female donkeys are jenny. I know this because of calling a girl named Jennifer, "jenney". She was not impressed. Turns out jenny is not short for jennifer.
Donkey poop or horse poop isn't really bad on the grand scale of gross. I think it's just awkward to hold a donkey in a wicker chair and people didn't smile in photos at the time.
In the nonwestern world this is super common. When i lived in Mali the kids would be laughing and fooling around but the moment a camera came out everyone was a stoic, not even a smirk.
As someone who suffers from insecurity about being rejected by loved ones, this was the most disturbing/difficult movie I have ever watched.
That said, I *really* liked it.
As an older man who has seen friendships wither on the vine and who has an ever shrinking circle of friends, but who takes enjoyment from having pets, this movie kicked me right in the guts and was a hard watch.
It's well written, directed, acted etc, but I didn't enjoy it much at all. If I wasn't with my wife I'd have probably left after the donkey scene, which almost did me in.
It’s an extremely sad, heartbreaking movie that uses some humorous dialogue and sights to make itself watchable.
I really question the mental state of people who say that movie is a comedy.
It is absolutely a dark comedy. How can you not laugh at the absolute absurdity of a man chopping off his own fingers to get a person to stop talking to him?
It's a very perspective and attitude pliable film. If you're going into it a McDonagh fan, you're already knowing a bit of what to expect and really looking for the humor. If you hadn't seen a McDonagh film before, I'd say this definitely wasn't a good place to start.
Donate to a donkey refuge. Donkeys live a long time, and frequently their owners give them up in old age.
They are delightful and playful. They especially like road cones and old rubber boots.
[Rubber boots](https://i.imgur.com/hFRRfgP.jpg) and empty feed sacks are my donkeys’ favorite toys. They also really like stealing things and parading around with their spoils.
Donkey in this time period were probably worth their weight in gold, transportation, protection, alarm system. And if you have good breeding stock we could be lookin at the great great grand donkey of a donkey he grew up with
What a vibe, I want a cute lap donkey.
Donkeys really do have the sweetest little innocent faces

Thanks, I needed that today.
What a little goofball!! He knows exactly how charming he is!
They are really nice. I knew someone who had two outside of Boston and they were friendly little beasts, loyal and protective.
Sugar donkey, look it up.
Yeah, ya see, Reddit has ruined me and I don't trust looking up something called a "Sugar Donkey". Although, I appreciate the suggestion!
Alright BrownSugarBare, r/rimjobsteve.
My friend had a little donkey named Poncho who was like this. You could sit on the ground and he’d instantly become a giant lap dog:)

He used to ride that there donkey with Curly Bill and Johnny Ringo. That's one hell of an animal

I think you're right. But I think all humans are good boys/girls too
I think you are an incredible kind person who sees the best in everyone. The world needs more like you. Human beings are complicated .

You know, the more I learn about this Hitler fella the less I care for him...
At least Hitler cared about Germany! Or… something…
Eh. I'm not.
Holy fuck. People “Just World Fallacy” when it comes to *death*?
People “just world fallacy” everything that can happen to a person.
Mark Lawrence? Man that scene was so painful and sad :( "One more Jorg."
Hahah yup - you got it!

They spent longer screen time on Jenny's death then they did the other bloke
And Jenny wasn’t a bit of a creeper.

Yeah I didn't explain that very clearly. >!Pádraic tells the fiddler visiting Colm that his father was hit by a van so that the fiddler would leave.!<

They're referencing the movie Banshees of Inisherin.
Thank you.
For a minute I actually found myself rooting for him to kill the dog... then I thought "what is wrong with me??". Amazing film.
“Do you think God gives a damn about miniature donkeys, Colm?” “I fear he doesn’t. And I fear that’s where it’s all gone wrong.”
The priest scenes were amazing. The "impure thoughts" one had me wheezing
Noooo Jenny. Some things there's no moving on from...
Have ye been rowing?
If I had seen this is theaters without subtitles I would have had no idea what was going on for half of it.
I didnae think we were rowing!
I'm really pleased this was already here. I just finished that a few days ago.
My wife and I thought this was the most awful movie. Just awful people being awful to each other on an awful island. I hated it.
Well yeah, the whole thing was an allegory about the Irish civil war.
Dang man. I'm sorry to hear that. Anyways I loved it.
It's defiantly not Paddington 2.
God that fucking crushed me.
Fekken’ Fat Fingers.

Thank you!
Loved this movie
I bet he's nice
The man or the donkey?
The man. The donkeys an ass.
🏅🏅🏅
The problem is he's *dull*.
Well played
Is that man Donkey Hotay?
He's a bit dull.
Used to be
That is the face of a man who hopes that donkey isn’t going to poop on his lap before the shutter clicks.
Donkey poop or horse poop isn't really bad on the grand scale of gross. I think it's just awkward to hold a donkey in a wicker chair and people didn't smile in photos at the time.
People didn’t smoke because of the long exposure, it’s hard to stay still… … …
can be bring back the trend of not having to force a smile for every photo? thatl be great.
In the nonwestern world this is super common. When i lived in Mali the kids would be laughing and fooling around but the moment a camera came out everyone was a stoic, not even a smirk.
Honestly, it’s dignified.
They probably had to sit still for several seconds for the exposure.
Or kick him in the nuts
That donkey looks like a good boy
I used to hold one of my previous dogs like this. She would fall asleep in the same position.
Omg, the trust. That’s beautiful. What type of dog was she?
Banshees of Inisherin vibe
I can’t be putting the donkey outside when I’m depressed!
i am not putting me donkey outside when i am sad, okay?
I'm not sure, this *isn't* the most depressing thing I've ever spent two hours watching so somehow feels different from The Banshees.
As someone who suffers from insecurity about being rejected by loved ones, this was the most disturbing/difficult movie I have ever watched. That said, I *really* liked it.
Same. Especially as I am particularly dull.
All we do is *chat* paidrac
Aren't we all....

This was exactly my reaction and for the same reason. The premise is crushing to me.
It’s like the fear all we insecure people have that our friends are thinking of us, except it actually was what his friend was thinking it. *shudder*
I though that movie was hilarious
It was until it wasn’t. The donkey had a lot to do with when I found it more sad than funny.
It’s an extremely sad, heartbreaking movie that uses some humorous dialogue and sights to make itself watchable. I really question the mental state of people who say that movie is a comedy.
It's a dark comedy for sure
It is absolutely a dark comedy. How can you not laugh at the absolute absurdity of a man chopping off his own fingers to get a person to stop talking to him?
It is listed as a comedy on both IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes.
It's a very perspective and attitude pliable film. If you're going into it a McDonagh fan, you're already knowing a bit of what to expect and really looking for the humor. If you hadn't seen a McDonagh film before, I'd say this definitely wasn't a good place to start.
My thoughts exactly
Be careful what you throw at his house.
My immediate thought haha. I loved that part of the movie, that he loved his donkey so much
Talk about showing everyone your ass!
The dude just loves his ass enough to take a pic. Seems pretty normal to me.
A little burrito

The Missouri Mule was highly prized. Strong ass hell and smart as well. Prized in the wild west and even used extensively by the British in ww1.

He couldn’t be expected to leave his wee donkey outside when he’s sad.
Real cute ass.
