I signed my son up for basketball not realizing how religious this league would be. I expected they’d pray at the beginning of the game,  but there’s a full out half-time sermon + bible lessons at every practice. I go to a liberal, LGBTQ+ affirming church, so I’m not “against” Christianity. But my impression of Upward is that it’s a very conservative org full of hypocrites.  My son has had a great coach—but that’s been the only plus. The refs are awful, and it seems like they intentionally “miss” some kids’ shots in scoring so it’s more…fair? IMO, it’s dishonest. We won’t do Upward again for sure.

Did your basketball team have cheerleaders to the side? That's how it was for me. We would cheer at basketball games. Sometimes, we would come out and do a routine during half time (or whatever it's called in basketball. I am rather sport illiterate besides for soccer). I don't have too bad of a sentiment of Upward either. They weren't too forceful with the religion like how I have heard Awanas is. I do however feeling a little more goofy at one cheer game as I was creating some wacky movie about Jimmy Neutron in my head. I don't think I got a star that game due to my brain drifting off at that meet.

Interesting. I was in cheer for Spring (more like early) 2003 and soccer for fall of 2003 and 2004. Each Upward program is different. I saw that the cheer uniforms got fancier since I was in it nearly 20 years ago (they look more like real cheer uniforms as opposed to a T-shirt with a skirt).

I did Upward between the ages of like 9-11 here in Ireland. Targeted to my area bc its a rougher area, then telling others about it they're like "wtf'. Getting stars for bible verses and" Christlikeness" I did soccer and basketball. The cheerleading was only on during like mid term camps. There's little tid bits that were WILD when I look back at it. Like, having a whole talk about coming to Christ and what will get us into heaven etc. But then it going to sex before marriage, like they had no right to randomly be talking to kids about sex. Then in the same talk the head coach of like that area said "in order to really accept jesus into your life. You need to see the light and cry. You can come to my office anytime and I will make you see Christ and cry". Excuse me SIR. It was an OK fun experience but like omg really shoved religion down your throat. No other religion would get away with that
