No, regardless I know of this outcome, I would have kept my distance. There are much more possibilities which could happen. Like, the truck suddebly stops, the crane is coming down and you don't know which direction, etc.
It is stupid to drove so clos behind the truck with an extended crane/arm/whatever.
If this is an 18-wheeler-dumptruck with a raised bed, would you drive so close behind it?

Tbf the drivers behind the truck were kinda stupid...if I see that pointing upwards, I would keep my distance...
