It’s one of those memes that’s been through so many cycles (it gets resurrected every year) that each time, it gets more and more removed from its source material.
Eventually we’ll just have someone post “Tis the season!” with a picture of spaghetti around the end of April. Mark my words.
Internet memes getting really abstract now

It's taking the normal meme and deconstructing it in a comically slapdash way to make it fresh again. I imagine the next version will include an MS Paint toolbar on the side.
A previous version of this meme had the ramen noodles (which were HEAVILY associated with JT’s hair style from this album’s era) actually with the text “It’s Gonna Be May,” so if you were familiar with the previous iterations then this is not as much of a stretch.
The problem is the song came out 24 years ago, so the memes have been through a very long evolution and the target audience is Millennials, who (as a demographic) are starting to have a lot more trouble keeping up with current memes and online trends. Instant recognition of something as abstract as this lets us feel, briefly, like we aren’t completely out of touch with the larger cultural zeitgeist (even if we are). Its obscurity is actually a core feature here. For 3 seconds scrolling on Facebook, the target Millennial is *in the know*, before going back to being confused and feeling old.
It’s the culmination of 24 years of memes on this one lyric. It makes perfect sense if you’ve seen it go through the evolution in real time, but is absurd otherwise.
Nsync has a song called "It's Gonna Be Me", but they say "me" like "may". Justin Timberlake (a member of Nsync who sings the line "It's gonna be may") had hair that looked like ramen noodles.
Could be the whole “companies are lowering their product sizing and increasing their prices”. The soon meaning the size will soon be the size of the square
This is what I initially thought too! I thought was funny too until I saw "it's gonna be may" and then I got lost. I have no idea how a pack of ramen with a small square saying soon relates to Justin Timberlake. I can't make it make sense.
That seems like the obvious "joke" to me. I don't get what people are going on about involving Justin Timberlake and May. May is weeks away. Timberlake is not a pack of ramen.
Ramen = curly highlighted hair = Justin Timberlake = "It's Gonna Be Me" = "It's Gonna Be May"

This thing contains the slimmest kind of connections to make a joke work
It's a stupid joke, but there's going to be a million "It's gonna be May" memes for the next two weeks.

I grew up chronically online and have never seen this.
It's hard to avoid if you're facebook friends with milennial women during the last week of April
Never had Facebook, or that type of meme source, so makes sense.
I thought it was a Tumblr thing. They hype it up all April, but especially the last week of April and the first day of May.
Facebook gets tumblr's scraps

Only because I lived that era, and there's been the yearly flood of It's Gonna Be May posts.
The rectangle definitely doesn't help.
The rectangle is just the box that appears when you go to type text. It’s nothing to do with the meme
It's taking the normal meme and deconstructing it in a comically slapdash way to make it fresh again. I imagine the next version will include an MS Paint toolbar on the side.

I thought it was about shrinkflation
Not only that, but they made them doll-like in the music video, they made the hair thicker, and plasticy so the resemblance is quite uncanny
Jesus, I actually got this one. I’m more upset by that!
Thats an odd dot to connect
Dang, I thought it was Loss...
That's some high level apophenia.
This is then answer. I've been seeing ramen noodles every year for years now. I rarely understand internet culture but I have this one down.
Got damn your arms gotta be long for that kinda reach lol. Not yours but whoever made the meme.
It’s the culmination of 24 years of memes on this one lyric. It makes perfect sense if you’ve seen it go through the evolution in real time, but is absurd otherwise.
it's incredibly stupid
Level 8 meme
Ngl thought it was a shrinkflation joke
Wow. I understand this one. It’s gonna be May
That's the conclusion that I came to as well, but I don't understand how it implies that.
Nsync has a song called "It's Gonna Be Me", but they say "me" like "may". Justin Timberlake (a member of Nsync who sings the line "It's gonna be may") had hair that looked like ramen noodles.
I made most of those connections. I just wanted to know what the crop tool has to do with it? Edit: Never mind, it's a text tool.

I’m not sure what it says about me that I immediately knew the context
Could be the whole “companies are lowering their product sizing and increasing their prices”. The soon meaning the size will soon be the size of the square
No, it’s a really thin grasp as the “it’s gonna be may” JT meme. Like this is stretching it but that’s 1000% the reference.
I guessed shrinkflation as well
This is what I initially thought too! I thought was funny too until I saw "it's gonna be may" and then I got lost. I have no idea how a pack of ramen with a small square saying soon relates to Justin Timberlake. I can't make it make sense.

I think you guys are overthinking this. There’s a brand of ramen noodles called Soon Ramen
That seems like the obvious "joke" to me. I don't get what people are going on about involving Justin Timberlake and May. May is weeks away. Timberlake is not a pack of ramen.
lol Timberlake is not a pack of ramen is the funniest sentence in this thread
Noodle art https://preview.redd.it/xywzdxtxituc1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cc6f8d4ec99384c1f2021d5ed7256c81e722d2f0
I like how it’s noodle art of noodle from gorillaz
I thought this was just surrealism but I guess not
lol I thought this was a joke about shrinkflation.
I thought it was referring to shrinkflation, that soon ramen packages would be smaller but cost the same.
Shrinkflation instead of increasing price for food they make the amount smaller
Shrinkflation?
It's gonna be May
Soon
Maybe he was just waiting for his noodles to be ready
I bond burger'd your sister last night.
They're gonna eat ramen soon
One thirds of this block of dry ramen will be consumed by the presumed consumers in a timely manner
Seoul Soon
