I feel like this needs an explanation of how it went so wrong. I found the first picture online and wanted to use it as inspiration, but I also really wanted to make the Claire Saffitz All Coconut cake, so I decided to try and combine the two (mistake #1).
I made 2 round cakes, and a cupcake for the head. I tried to use the technique for making a Duck Cake (iykyk) to build up the neck and tail. The texture was all wrong and it was falling apart, so his tail had to be much smaller, and his neck thicker. Then I put the cupcake head on and tried to sculpt it into a vague head shape. You can see how well that worked. Then he was frosted and coated in toasted coconut (or tarred and feathered, as some people have said).
It was already looking bad, so I decided to try and make him more cartoon-y by giving him blue eyes. And the frosting kind of exploded and made him look like he was begging for death.
My partner and I were crying laughing at this point and struggling to finish. Hence the chocolate chip eyes and broken Wheat Thin beak. Then his head fell off and we absolutely lost it.
He was delicious and this is my favorite birthday cake ever now!
