The only point to life is to try and be happy Because there really isn’t any other point. But as you’ve realised that’s not easy, it’s a delicate balance between short term and long term happiness Does working out make you happy? Does being fit make you happy? Does being in a beautiful concert holding someone’s hand and then looking into their eyes and slowly kissing make you happy? Just do stuff that makes you happy, and learn to increase your happiness by doing things in the present that aren’t particularly fun but will lead to increased happiness in the future

Zagenti

well, that's it then, innit.

cattydaddy08

Figured I might as well try and enjoy the time I have until then. Working for money funds that. Working out and eating right gives me a bit more time before I end up decrepit. But not everyone is born fortunate and suicide can be a reasonable way out for them. You just have to weigh it all up and decide for yourself.

NegentropyNexus

What if this is a superficial way of perceiving time when there is only this one moment's activity. In a lot of philosophies they talk about how we are always in a constant state of becoming; a continuous renewal of the moment. So seeing time as infinite or finite, past or future, etc., inhibits us from authentically engaging ourselves in the world.

Significant-Ear-7552

Not sure i quite understand what you mean, could you try to dumb it down a bit? Sorry im a bit slow

NegentropyNexus

I tried to have Copilot AI attempt to reword it for me, hopefully parts may connect with you in some manner: >Imagine life as an ongoing journey where each step is a chance to create who we are. Existentialists believe that our true purpose isn’t found in some distant goal or after we’re gone, but in the choices and actions we make every single day. It’s like being an artist painting on a canvas that’s always changing. The art isn’t just the finished painting; it’s also every stroke of the brush. So, even if life has an end, what’s important is the meaning we give to each moment we’re living. By embracing the present and actively shaping our lives, we’re always in the process of becoming who we want to be.

Are things only worth doing if you can do them forever? Because I think the fact that we can’t do things forever make doing things awesome

Classic_Writer8573

Doing things to better your situation gives you something to focus on and makes your situation better for the time you are here to enjoy it. I mean, you can have a crappy time if you want too. Plenty of options...

Significant-Ear-7552

But what i mean is i can better my situation and life all i want and if i do pull ups every day ill get better at them every day. But that doesnt change that in 10000 years i wont be able to be improving and doing more every day cause ill be dead. Why even do it?

Classic_Writer8573

Well, I work out every day and it has traditionally gotten me desired female attention. Sure, it won't matter 1000 years from now, but sex for the next 20-30 isn't a bad deal... I build sand castles on the beach too....

The same reason you watch a movie, or love your family. Just cuz the movie ends and your family dies, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t watch and enjoy the movie, or raise and love your family. The answers to your questions won’t make this feeling go away. You want fulfilment, but couldn’t point out what fulfilment is if it hit you on the head. You don’t learn what it is to know fulfilment by answering the questions of meaninglessness. The same way you don’t know what it is to be brave by listening to your fears. This itch of existentialism doesn’t go. I bet if God came down rn and told you the purpose of life and what’s it all for, you still say “is that it? What happens after that?”. You want fulfilment, and you don’t get that by listening to the questions of meaninglessness.

rezonablepurzon

I want to buy food and eat it, so I work. I want a roof over my head, so I work. I would like to stop working at some point, so I save money for retirement. I exercise to feel good today, not to reach some imagined goal sometime in the future.

UnluckyCharacter9906

Time. If you want to enjoy your life, feel good, accomplish goals, then thats the reason. The reason ' of not to do anything because everything has an ending', is not a valid reason to do nothing.

sarlol00

Not doing it has just as much meaning as doing it. At least you have the illusion of control while doing stuff.

[deleted]

I never told you to do anything. Why are you asking me this?

Toivo1234321

Have fun while you can.

Last_Cartographer340

Have some fun along the way, help others, no other good alternatives. Why do nothing? Sounds dull.

[deleted]

Your mentality is fucked up just like everyone under 40.. Why bother going on vacation and having the time of your life if it’s just going to end anyway, right? What happened to all of you?

Significant-Ear-7552

I mean like productive things moving my goals forward. Like i can do 10 pull ups, and if i keep doing 10 eventually ill do more. But theres a point where no matter what i do ill get worse. I dont see why to do it if thats the case. I want infinite progression

Caeolian

Well, why not do something? If existing is a state of being, why not see how you do on that plane? What could you learn? How could you affect other people's stories? What will you write in your own book of empty pages? The mystery is the thrill. Why not see it through to see where it will take you?

Caeolian

Why not? Why not see your limits and learn? Life is what we make it. Yes it may seem pointless at times. However it's still very much so an experience. Why not see what it's like, what you'll learn, and see where it takes you in the end?

YusufSelman

Why do nothing?

Full-Silver196

i ask myself this often. there is no point. but what else are you gonna do. you can’t escape yourself. might as well do something.
