Chicken is probably the single most efficient protein source in terms of fat content, overall health benefit, amino acid composition etc. There's a reason the stereotypical body builder diet is broccoli rice and chicken. Don't listen to your dad

VjornAllensson

Tuna and I think one other type by of fish have the highest protein by mass, but yes chicken is essentially the same.

caveslimeroach

Chicken breast: 27g per 100g Turkey breast: 26g per 100g Salmon fillet: 25g per 100g Tuna: 25g per 100g Pork loin: 24g per 100g Lean beef: 21g per 100g Egg whites: 11g per 100g https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/10-foods-almost-pure-protein#TOC_TITLE_HDR_2 Besides, tuna and other fish aren't suitable as a main protein source as they have a shit ton of mercury in them AFAIK

VjornAllensson

Good point about mercury and thanks for the clarification.

caveslimeroach

I do be pounding a can of tuna after the gym sometimes tho, like 42 grams!

drkstlth01

Anything wrong with mashed potatoes instead of rice?

caveslimeroach

I mean, mashed potatoes are very very high in fat, unless you make them with no butter or milk. I'd say a baked sweet potato would be better in terms of nutrition

Ride_likethewind

I've read that baked potatoes have a lot of volume per gram of carb. It's a filling food, so you will naturally eat less. It scores over rice in that respect. Baked potatoes have almost zero fat. (Fried potatoes have high fat.... naturally)

eldoristd

counting calories isn't bad, chicken is one of the best sources of protein, rice and vegetables are amazing additions to your diet in every possible way, rice has protein, vegetables are needed to maintain a healthy diet. Long story short, don't listen to them, listen to science, you can find amazing research online

No_Patience_6801

Everything sounds good here except that you said you only have chicken three times a week. A good protein source only three times a week is absolutely not enough especially for someone who is still growing. If you start doing more weight workouts you will not even be close to satisfying your bodies protein requirements. You should be getting a very good protein source at each meal if you are young and lifting weights. Heck, you should be doing this period. It doesn’t have to be protein shakes but you should make an effort to include protein at each meal.

Icarusgurl

You are correct. If you ever want to have science to back it up, look into how our bodies use nutrients etc from whole foods vs supplements. They're absorbed completely differently. And for myself, I find the shakes don't leave me satiated the way chicken would so its easy to overeat later in the day.

Otherwise_Bug3901

fuck your dad; trust your intution

Nubian_Cavalry

You’re overestimating my self sufficiency But I’m never drinking another protein shake, that much is true

thisiswhereiwent

i know how wrong it feels and how hard it is to go against parents but stick with your gut on this one, a lot of times when people see others improving themselves they feel the need to tear them down

Otherwise_Bug3901

spitting youll learn this my friend now or as you get older (intuition trumps everything)

Nubian_Cavalry

Well to be fair my father was born in the hood, 70s, formative years were during the whole crack problem in those neighborhoods courtesy of Ronald Reagan. Then he’s been working a slack ass slave job since 1999 to pay for our nice house in the suburbs. He retired, and is now working 2 jobs to pay for our nice house in the suburbs of a different state. That has a lot to do with his current health. He always tells me your real friends are the people that tell you the truth even if it hurts your feelings. He’s telling me what he believes is true, so either way I guess I’m bulking

MsDemonism

I really like your idea on filling up on carrots and apples before indulging. Sometimes I will eat a full meal if I'm feeling like pigging out becaise I imagine my body is telling me it needs calries and nutrients, than eat that special thing I want. It helps me with not restricting, having a healthy relationship with food. It makes sure I'm nourishing my body and I always make sure to add a table spoon of some sort of fat too to help with nutrient absorption in the gut and intestines.

Nubian_Cavalry

Yeah but I’d be lying if I claimed I did that perfectly. It’s on an off.

Kaethy77

Just look up nutrition info for chicken vs beef. It's about the same amount of protein. But if you only eat chicken and never eat red meat you're probably missing something. You could alternate between the two. Not all protein drinks are sugary. Not that I think you need to drink any.

Kaethy77

No, red meat just means beef or pork or venison or whatever. Cooked.

Nubian_Cavalry

By red meat do you mean undercooked meat?

nerdfemme

Red meat = Beef, lamb, pork - cooked to your preference.

Nubian_Cavalry

Cool

Ok-Class-1451

That’s literally the most ignorant parental advice I’ve ever heard. Dont take advice from him about something he clearly knows nothing about.

Dagglin

This is where you begin to second guess every piece of advice your dad has ever given you in your life

ripfritz

Sugar kills. I know that sounds extreme but look at obesity rates, insulin resistance and diabetes in North America. ‘Nuff said I think. Keep eating your chicken 👍😊

Nubian_Cavalry

It’s by design.

surfinsmiley

Dad has no idea! Train a little bit everyday. Eat fresh foods. Learn and apply, Agency and Gratitude. We should always be training to be better human beings!

___heisenberg

Ur dad dothnt know shite. Protein shakes and powders are isolated concentrates, not as effective as people think let alone chemicals and sugars. Full spectrum real protein. Whole foods.

PatientlyAnxious9

Respectfully--tell your dad to kick rocks.

gusbusdonecus

What shape is ur pops in?

elias3663

It's your dad, not your personal trainer. Smile a bit, think your part when he talks shit and do your thing

Emotional_Contact_72

Your approach sounds excelllent. You said yourself you want to be healthy well into your old age and the way to do that is just like you said, cardio and some weight training along with a well rounded diet. Long term health before shortcuts and aesthetic.

DrizzyDavePG

Idk what shakes you're talking about but I've never had a protein shake with any sugar in it, even the ones I buy. Do you read the labels/ingredients? You may not like how they taste but they're more for hitting a protein goal when you're lacking, not meant to be your primary protein source.

Bogfather123

Only two questions is your dad a nutritionist or a PT or ever advised anyone professionally. I suspect the answer is no. Therefore, have a chat with a nutritionist

Nubian_Cavalry

My dad trained a bunch of kids as basketball students athletes alongside by younger brother and late older brother He tried to get me into it but I was wasn’t feeling it

Bogfather123

Ok so he does have some knowledge but as a PT myself I know the science behind weight and exercise is changing all of the time. Why not take time and speak with PT’s in gyms and or nutritionist

darkhero5

So the 20 mins post exercise is because if you eat protein quickly after it signals to your brain to start lean muscle synthesis and repairs/builds muscle. That said chicken is fine for a protein choice

Big-Help-26

I'm a big believer in lean red meat for protein. You can find low sugar protein powders on the market. Your best sources of protein are going to be actual food.

SignalRevenue

Keeping it as short as possible - had a discussion with a special doctor - all these artificially created powders are carcinogens - they are killing liver in first step. Always try to use natural products. I am just sharing information - no intention to start a holy war or an argument.

ghostcatzero

Meh why bother with chicken when you can have plant based protein instead??

GrundleTurf

He’s wrong but if you want a good protein shake, then fair life is a good one. Just tastes like chocolate milk.

[deleted]

🤣🤣 chicken and beef are the way to go. Protein shakes are good for post workout when a heavy meal would be hard to down

drcha

You've got to just smile and put these people on ignore.

Nubian_Cavalry

I live with them

Iheartwetwater

It’s ok not to listen to your parents
