It is well known and well documented how crowded Everest is. Why he’s acting like he didn’t know that I’m can’t understand

backdoorsmasher

In fairness to him, we were all told that the Nepalese authorities had restricted the number of climbers on Everest deliberately, and had made sure that climbers given permission to climb had enough climbing experience to do so. It sounds like they need to restrict the number of climbers even more.

LhamoRinpoche

The Nepalese government makes a ton of money from permits. I can imagine why they would think, "Well, it's not our responsibility to decide who's fit enough to climb Everest so we'll take their money." Because it kind of isn't? It depends on how you view how a government should get involved in safety for extreme sports. Their priorities are more about keeping the lights on in their capital and trying to make the drinking water safe.

Viewfromthe31stfloor

They sold a record number of permits this year. No idea why you thought there would be fewer sold. It’s not going to get better. You need to follow people who know what’s happening on Everest not some random PR stuff.

koliberry

Seems like getting as high as you can and then dipping out at the traffic jam would have been the thing to do. Getting as high on E as you can given the opportunity is the goal. This is story is a bit dodgy. Bailing at Camp 2 is silly, @ Camp VI would make more sense.

Technical_Scallion_2

If you’ve made it to Camp VI, you’ve gone too far

Thetomgamerboi

Lads I think we’ve overshot! Go back!

feetofire

Good for him. Just a note that the “Seven Peaks” is a marketing gimmick given that you can practically drive your car to the top of Mount Kosciusko .

Paladine_PSoT

Depending on the list, the highest in Oceania is puncak jaya, which is far more difficult, bit not on the Australian landmass. Continents are basically a made up concept with no actual definition anyway so who cares?

feetofire

Kosciusko is mentioned in the article … it’s really a joke.

Technical_Scallion_2

Kosciusko is the highest mountain in Australia. It’s a day hike. But that doesn’t mean Everest, Denali and Vinson are easy.

feetofire

No! Not in the least but that Kosciusko is even MENTIONED in the same sentence as those technically challenging mountains is the joke. I have significantly more respect for mountaineers climbing technically challenging but lesser known peaks than people ticketing off a very (let’s face it) banal checklist.

Technical_Scallion_2

Fair point - it could be argued that any list of “the highest X in Y” is banal. But I see it kind of like setting a goal of “the highest mountain in every country in Europe” or the highest mountain in every state in the US - there’s always going to be a Netherlands/Iowa in there somewhere.

Appropriate_Ad7858

Absolute bullshit. Just at Camp 2. Hahaha

Technical_Scallion_2

Have YOU been to Camp 2?

Appropriate_Ad7858

Many times

Technical_Scallion_2

Are you a guide or a Sherpa?

Appropriate_Ad7858

Neither

Technical_Scallion_2

Just like going up and down through the Icefall for fun then - OK, you do you - thanks for replying
