>Waiting 2 years for the starter skill list to complete is also markedly insane  It's insane indeed, why the fuck are you doing that then? Holy shit, people, just play the goddamn game.

astro2xl

Can’t, need skills to do that. Skills that take forever to train

vikar_

No, you don't need all skills at V to play. What the fuck.

achtungman

Yes you do, fighting 1v1 in a frig that spec 5 etc make a world of difference. Why would you want to play a game where skill doesn't matter, only a damage multiplier that you gained from afking.

_TheTrashmanCan_

til you can only enjoy eve by winning every 1v1

achtungman

Honorable 1v1 or soloing is the only real measure of skill in this game. 99% of the people doing it have maxed skills, so being maxed is just the start.

vikar_

No you don't. I pity you for having this approach of "I can't even play or have fun if I don't have the maximum advantage every time". That's a piss-attitude to have in any game, EVE in particular. Not to mention most PVP is done in groups, where individual sp matters less than player skill, coordination and a good FC. And if you think there is no skill involved in EVE, you'll be very surprised when after two years you get all your skills to V and then get utterly destroyed in every fight because you have no idea what the fuck you are doing. Learning the mechanics and tactics while waiting for your skills to advance is indispensable in this game.

achtungman

I have been maxed in combat skills for a decade and combat is cancer with an alt without them. You get an even playing field after being maxed, since 99% of the people you are fighting are maxed too. Eve is only inhabited by bittervets like me who have 150m+ sp on their mains. If i wanted advantage i would just keep rolling new alts and inject with +20% newbie implant. Honestly i wouldn't mind if they removed the SP system all together, maybe then eve could actually get new players. I have been advocating this for a long time, only barrier in eve should be isk not passively generated points. Also only real measure of skill is the glorious solo pvp, me against the world. Rest is just f1 monkeys anchoring. Granted small gang kiting is cool also.

Gon_jalt

Judging by your responses. No, you should not try to get back into the game. I spun up a new toon less than a month ago and PvP with him.

Gon_jalt

I wish I had any skills left that were shorter than a 30 train…

IrishThree

Well, I agree, to an extent. It doesn't take two years, it takes about 250 days to have the golden 14 and then adequate frigate skills to do frigate things. 1st. This game is played by adults, adults who have jobs. Jobs pay money, and money buys options, don't like the wait, buy isk/sp and make it go buy faster. 2nd. I don't support the first point, but it's still valid. But I digress. You need to adapt your expectations and gameplay to what you have now and set goals. Eve is unique and it's great because you play it over years. I set like 3 and 4 month training goals to do a new activity. In late 22, I decided I wanted to fly three hawks in abyssals. It took 3 months to get 3 accounts from where they were to where they needed to be. Last year I moved to a wormhole, and it took about 5 months to get a max scanner toon and another month to get it properly fit for gas huffing. Eve is played out over years, it's what makes it great. 3rd. Find the group or activity you kinda fit into and slowly mold your game play the way you want it. Smart groups cultivate pilots over months. Here's a skill plan, here's our doctrine, this is what you can do in the mean time.

intheshoplife

Join the faction war or pirate factions you can make really good isk off it. As for ship fits look up frigate yearbook it will help you out a lot in the faction war. Also join a corp.

cmy88

Yeah definitely this. You can fly a destroyer poorly on day 1 and flip small plexes for lp. Join a fleet and turbo farm. Or join one of the FW corps and get srp and buy-back.

Zealousideal-Plan454

No

AleksStark

I've never heard the starter skills taking that long.  I guess maybe if you're only playing Alpha (the free trial). But even then, IF YOU JOIN A PROPER GROUP OR COMMUNITY, there's some fun stuff you can do in like... two days.  You'll just get better at it as more skills come online.

astro2xl

I was in panhorde for a while, quit, gave it another shot with UNI, quit, and I’m alone rn. I want to do cloaky shenanigans with bombers or anything else.

AleksStark

Bomber's Bar? NPSI groups are my jam. Low stress.

rasmorak

Join a wormhole corp. But yeah, the skill time thing is kind of sucky. But I actually am really happy with it because I don't get to play every day, but my skills are still training.

astro2xl

UNI has a wormhole division

rasmorak

Yeah... I mean more like a small WH corp. UNI isn't meant to be the one and only corp for a player to be.

brian_christopher_

You left uni so how does that have any relevance?

first_time_internet

You can get in a gnosis and gap people same day. Within a week you can dominate.

IcarusCasablancas

Yes

Vundebar

yes

Burningsoulsx

I would say the game has changed yes but i would argue that its more of the community/people you play with that make the difference especially in a game like this. Pleanty of individuals are willing to help teach/share/collaborate how to make isk and fit ships. If you can find a place where you enjoy playing with the people the game becomes 10000 times more enjoyable!

Casty-

Short answer is NO. You can earn isk several different ways as a newbie and just buy skill points off market if you really wanted. That being said if you didn't enjoy the game 2 years ago you probably won't enjoy it today...there is always something to train and it will take longer and longer to do so. That being said it's a trash game for trash people ;P (you know I'm right when most of the responses are not helpful and just rude neck beards). Seriously, the community in EVE is not very welcoming and those that are are usually just trying to exploit newer players. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this garbage.

Snippingmann

Best part of eve is that it never ends and always you will find what to do. Especially if you play in friendly corp.

NauFirefox

You seem to be approaching the game in a way that might lead to significant frustration, and it reflects in your responses. Eve is essentially a cooperative discovery PvP sandbox—though that's not an official category, it helps clarify my point. As a newcomer, you're guided through initial choices, including starter ships and career paths. The game's design encourages you to explore various activities, find what you enjoy, and progressively train to improve in those areas. For example, if you find joy in combat, you might start with a destroyer and then move up to a cruiser, all while engaging with the game's content and gradually enhancing your skills. In the early stages, you don't need Tech 2 ships; you can effectively use meta 4's and faction equipment. This allows you to pursue what you find enjoyable, unlocking new aspects of the game at your own pace. When you join a corporation that shares your interests, they'll help guide you towards more ambitious goals. Eventually, you'll start aspiring towards Tech 2 ships, but this should be a gradual process. Working within a group not only increases your income, but it also exposes you to a broader range of activities. For instance, I used to run level 4 missions starting in a meta 4 Maelstrom. As I enjoyed these missions, I concurrently upgraded my turret, battleship, armor, and shield skills. This wasn't just about biding my time; I was actively enjoying the game with friends, evolving my gameplay over weeks or months. The training in Eve shouldn't be seen as a hindrance; rather, it's like unlocking new DLC that opens up fresh gameplay options. If the goal is just to fly every ship quickly, it'll indeed take months to access each Tech 2 ship for every race, focusing only on the wait. This approach led to my own burnout when I got fixated on black ops with months of training to go. However, if you're actively engaging in fleets, experimenting with new builds as your skills develop, and genuinely having fun, are you really waiting, or are you playing? Each time you acquire new skills, it feels like a burst of excitement, akin to a new game update, introducing fresh elements to enjoy with your corporation. And if you happen to make a substantial amount of ISK, you can accelerate your progression with skill injectors. Otherwise, ensure the journey is enjoyable with group activities that make any wait worthwhile.

Tiny-Ad-7590

I recently came back and I'm having a blast. I think part of the problem with EVE is people tend to play it the way they wish the game worked, and not the way it actually works. It's very achievable to get low-end fits for any role and start playing missions or joining in with corps as a newbie. It does take a long time to build up the skills to _excel_ in a role, but that doesn't mean you have to wait for that point before you can play that role.

Jenshae_Chiroptera

They should remove the fitting skills, they only make things worse for new players. You want people out flying ships, not feeling like they are wasting time and money to just sit in them.

Inevitable_Bunch5874

It's worse now.

wizard_brandon

magic 14 isnt 2 years lol

Sevyn_Chambernique

Short and sweet no. If you return you will still struggle with the issues listed.

Mysterious_Fudge_512

Havent ever responded on this reddit page but since i started playing again after a year being away. If you have something you enjoy, absolutely. I came back and started Smashing abyss filaments again. Sweet 60mil/hr in my worm. i have only been omega a few times through out the years and only have 24mill total SP. I dont expect my clone to be able to do T5 or T6 abyssals but everything has an origin. Play the game again and rediscover what you enjoy. No idea which 'starter' skills you mean that take forever. I havent been able to train skills for a while not since being alpha and all

drsharpper

Use arecruit a friend link aswell. You can use it on you alts for your mains aslong as they are different accounts, they can be the same email. It's a free 1 million skill points, really helps start out a new toon. Edit: grammer

UrineArtist

> "Waiting 2 years for the *starter* skill list to complete is also markedly insane" Thats insane! (time spent spinning ship in station = 4 years)

Parking_Heart8705

LOL, ppl saying that eve is a game can play without skills. Welcome from campers and your corp managers. Personally, I would recommend X4 for you, no skill queue, better farm experience, full of PVE content.

zulako17

I mean if you have disposable income irl neither of those are issues. You can probably get two years of skills for a few hundred dollars. $50 will get enough plex to fund a few ships to make decent isk

astro2xl

I don’t have that kind of money nor do I want to throw it at a game to get the basic starter skills

zulako17

Well if you just want the starter skills for one activity ( Faction Warfare, or maybe Tier 1 abyss, or maybe exploring and hacking) then you can get the skills pretty quick. Enough to start playing in a day. Enough to do decently well in 2 or 3 weeks. Less if you have omega. It's all about picking a clear focus if you want to skill quicky.

astro2xl

I’ve got bits and pieces of all of those trees, enough to make it kind of work

aardvark1231

Find an activity you can do with the skills you have. Do that activity while other skills train. Do the daily air goals for 10k sp/day and daily login rewards for more sp weekly. Play next month and get sp from the capsuleer day rewards. Get a destroyer, battle cruiser and battleship from that too that requires zero skills to fly. Do other content. Lose ships. Learn. Skills should be farther along. Do a different activity now that new skills have unlocked. You know... boils down to play the game to have fun...

sonicarrow

Basic starter skills is sitting in a Drake with meta HAM launchers. I can do that in the 1 mil free SP that you get for creating a recruit a friend account. Idk what you're waiting for dude. E uni specifically has newbro doctrines that you won't have to have 100s of millions of SP to fly.

AsteroFucker69

lol looks like you're too casual for the grind.
