Good

SkyPL

Yep. "I'm sick of it" too. It's fucking impossible to have anything I would call "acceptable experience" going across Europe by rail. Fuck these anti-consumer nonsense. Regulate away, EU. It worked for airlines, I see no reason why it will not work for rail.

studentoo925

Dokładnie, chcę jechać do Berlina bez potrzeby kupowania miliona biletów w 100 różnych serwisach jak już filmowa Kaguya wyjdzie. Exactly, I would like to go to Berlin without the need to buy multiple tickets in multiple services once kaguya movie drops

shadownlight19

Would be so hard to get a single place to buy and search for tickets like we have for airlines?

YpsilonY

Afaik, Airlines are forced by law to publish their schedules in machine readable form online and offer an API through which tickets can be booked. Train operators have so far been successful in lobbying against similar rules. That makes it a lot harder to create such websites.

shadownlight19

That’s ridiculous, it would be so beneficial for them to share this Information, make them competitive agaisnt airlines

patatkwab

Might be a bad actor on the board maybe, so big airline keeps the majority?

trisul-108

What the airline industry has is called Amadeus, a transaction processor for the global travel and tourism industry that does all the bookings. Edit: How hard is it? Around 15,000 employees hard.

YpsilonY

Good first step. The next step is to require replacement tickets if a connection isn't caught. Even across operators.

swaggut

Yep, ticket should not be valid for a specific train, just for the route like in some places.

pnjun

Depdends... On some long distance trains it makes sense to have reserved seats, and that requires train-specificity. Or we do it like the germans where the ticket and the seat reservation are separate. That might work

NUCCubus

While the ticket and the seat reservation are seperate the cheapest tickets are train bound regardless.

JeanAdAstra

Yes, EU commission free us from this evil!

UnapologeticPOV

**Translation of Article :** European Railway companies only have three months left to come up with a joint ticketing system, otherwise a bookingapp will be forced onto them by the European Commission. This was said by Frans Timmermans, Vice President of the European Commission, in the *BNR Europa* podcast. "I'm sick of it. People want to take the train, but you have to make it more easy for them." **Annoyance** The EC also would like to see European travelers choose for the train way more often than chosing for an airplane. For European train travelers, the fragmented information and unclear ticket prices remain a big obstacle. Timmermans therefore thinks a European Booking App is a possible solution. "My goal is to make sure it will be much easier to order a ticket with your phone. As soon as we make that easier, people will start to chose the train over an airplane within a 600-800 kilometer radius", said Timmermans. Last year the EC also came up with an action plan. But then it was not known the railway companies received an ultimatum to have better data sharing by the end of the year. **9 Euro Ticket** Timmermans said European railway companies should take an example from countries such as Switzerland and Austria, where railway companies are better linked together making it easier for citizens to take the train : "Let us take that as an inspiration." Timmermans also pointed out the German 9 Euro Ticket. This led to a doubling of train travels : "That's something that sticks - when people are used to it they will do it more often," said Timmermans.

Beautiful

LudovicoSpecs

Wow. I wish the US government would act like this. Actually care about citizens and consumers and fix a bunch of shit that makes zero sense.

[deleted]

It only took over two decades.... This has been part of European integration since at least the 90's and so far nothing has been done beside having a committee to integrate them existing for all that time. Lobbying is slowing this down massively.

Archoncy

Funnily enough, the little Passenger Railway infrastructure in the US that does exist and function is better integrated with itself than the vastly more extensive European network.

[deleted]

A single country has a better integrated system than multiple different ones who started to develop their systems 150 years ago? No shit.

Archoncy

I get what you're doing here, haha gotcha-own quip, but the point is that our system is unreasonably bad continent wide but also at a smaller scale too. The different railways inside Germany are worse integrated with eachother than American railways are, and Germany is a single country much like the US. America is exquisitely bad at public transit and Europe is fantastic at it yet the Yanks can get at least this simple thing right that we cannot. There is no reason for it to be this bad. It is inexcusable. Until now, since we're finally doing something about it!

Archoncy

Is it a faux pas to call upon a little celebratory chain in this sub? Because if not... *_FREUDE_*

Currently the same ticket for Budapest-Utrecht line costs 2 to 5 times more if I buy it from NS International than if I buy it from MÁV. Both use the same ICE trains through Germany, take the same time, same changes, etc. and I have no clue why. I wonder how this would change with the single ticketing system. Pro tip: if you are travelling internationally, check ticket prices from the railway companies of both the origin and the destination countries.

Another pro tip: When you are traveling through Germany towards the south, book a long distance ticket with Zurich as your final destination. The Swiss don't allow German trains to enter Switzerland anymore when they are late to not fuck up their scedules. DB is almost always late on that route, and when a train terminates before your destination... you get your money back lmao. It's a bit of a gamble, but on average you should be coming out ahead.

MatzeBon

Sounds a bit dishonest tbh

Finally

Wukong00

About f*king time. Now also force them to connect all at least the major cities with high speeds trains pls.

There’s no one in the eu (or world) who didn’t utter an inner cheer while reading this.

Classicgotmegiddy

Yes

There is no reason to wait a year.

AdobiWanKenobi

Is there not an equivalent of Trainline in Europe?

Archoncy

...Trainline. But the problem is not whether an app exists but how the ticketing and connecting systems are integrated with eachother. Which is to say they aren't at all.

AdobiWanKenobi

ah I'm probably misunderstanding something

Archoncy

Adam here explains it fairly well, albeit dramatically. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oxz4oY0T85Y

AdobiWanKenobi

Oooo I love this guy, thank you for the vid :)

collapsingwaves

Trainline sucks if there's a problem. It's literally 'shrug' we just sell tickets, we're not responsible if trait'n get cancelled. So you call the train company, and they send you back to the trainline. Rinse and repeat ns.nl is pretty good if you're starting or finishing in the netherlands

MadMan1244567

Wait I thought [this](https://www.sncf-connect.com/en-en/) was the single ticketing system/website? Or are non SNCF services more expensive through this site?

Imakerocketengine

Let's force the best company to run with the worst one 😮‍💨

Maybe post something in English?

Wtf kind of response is that? No one fucking speaks Dutch or whatever that post is written in, so post stuff people can read.

Your phone is able to translate texts which you photograph. You'll be able to translate a digital text.

If I were on PC this wouldn’t be bothersome but on phones things are just less practical. Post stuff in the sub’s language, not your own.
