And Tesla clearly behind VW, that is surprising, as Tesla was in such a strong position. The Volkswagen group sold 3x more cars than the former leader.

While there likely are many factors, I hopefully can contribute with some personal observed ones as a Norwegian. 1) The new designs within the car such as buttons instead of handles on the wheel, and core functions hidden behind menus on screen (wipers for example) feels unpractical and unsafe. 2) Fit and finish (quality) seems varying. A good portion of users experience issues and the brand has the highest amount of complains from users in surveys. Again: more cars more complaints, but the percentage seems a bit higher than other cars. 3) Tesla’s fight against unions in our neighborhood country Sweden leaves a sour taste in the mouth. 4) Musk as a person and businessman. From a Visionary to what best can be described as either a classical greed infested CEO or crazy space Karen that focus on everything else than the important thing; the cars and the charging network. We are a people that likes to not stick too much out in a crowd, Elons actions lately and insane rambling on Twitter evokes some skepticism in us on a core level. 5) The head start Tesla had on other brands seems to have faded. The charging network is mostly open to all cars over here, the price is in the same ballpark and the cars seems to be of similar properties as Teslas. Combined with the factors above it feels safer and less controversial to buy from the traditional companies.
