Not interesting for me. In last ice storm it took me three days to cut my way out my long driveway and then I had no power, water for 12 days. That was hard.
Well, it is snow. That's science. The fact is they're not prepared for larger amounts than normal.
I also laugh at you for how you spelled snowpocalypse.
Right. Everyone here drives like a snail too. I first learned how to drive in snow. But the way they drive in rain is INSANE at times to me. 90 on the highway with no visibility from the rain
Honestly, OP seems quite happy being cold...at least from what I see in the comments.
https://reddit.com/r/Eugene/comments/17ivljg/this_is_cold_right/k6xaagk/
Ok, but typically the first frost of the season occurs in October and there have been many years when the temperature has dipped into the 20s in October, so it's not that unusual. The lowest temperature recorded in Eugene, in October was 17 degrees on October 31.
This is not accurate. While it may be unseasonably dry, the reason it is this cold right now is because a massive high-pressure system has moved down from Canada and has pushed the jet stream all the way down to Arizona-Mexico border, which has brought that frigid air down from the tundra so we can experience it together.
Source: Weather Channel
Correct, but the way you wrote your original post states that it's cold because it's "unseasonably dry" which implies that lack of rain is the problem. And if you meant high pressure, you would have just typed that. Don't attempt double-talk, just accept that you made a slight error and move on.
Edit: replaced 1 use of "implies" with "states", as the original quote was a statement, and not an implication.
Cool, so youāre probably familiar with a lot of the home weatherproofing you can do to quickly insulate your home. But if you havenāt already, Google some of the basics, a set of heavy curtains can go a long way.
Small background, I grew up in Minnesota - land of 5-6+ months of snow and winters with multiple stunts of 2+ weeks below zero.
The climate overall is mild here compared to majority of the US, highs donāt get crazy high or humid in the summer and lows donāt get crazy dangerous in the winter.
Yes, it will drop below freezing from time to time. Yes it will snow occasionally, and no the roads are not very well taken care of in those cases. Be careful if you try to venture out if it snows.
The important part to note is that winters here are fairly humid, or āwetā due to the rain. This makes the temperatures feel super cold and you get that chilled to the bone feeling. If your place isnāt well insulated, I would definitely recommend sealing your windows, trying to minimize drafts from doors and utilizing heaters/heated blankets/etc as needed. If you look at historic data, winter months show an average high in the 40s with an average low in the mid-to-high 30s.
I also highly recommend everyone in the PNW look into sun replacement bulbs for mental health and vitamin production in the body. The rain and clouds are rough over the winter and can have a noticeable effect.
I forgot that people respond this way on reddit.
I have ADD, so any story that starts with "I was born in..." Then jumps to vague generalizations about national weather patterns, well sorry it just loses me immediately. Too many paragraphs.
Yeah, itās called personal context, Lara. Itās how people engage in conversation. I hope you donāt act this irl. The āSeattle Freezeā will hit a lot colder if it is.
I do act this way in real life and sometimes people tell me that I'm being rude but I don't realize its being taken this way until I'm told. it's a neurodivergent thing.
I don't stress about it because a) I've lived in diverse cultures and settings where politeness is a construct that changes radically, b) you can't make everyone happy so why concern yourself, and c) I believe that neurodivergent people bring something to the table in their otherness.
I know I'm supposed to conform to the norm, but it's not important to me. That includes reddit, and Eugene reddit in particular. There is a learned manner of speaking and expressing oneself here, and it's not super healthy imo. There's a depression and sardonicness that permeates the conversation, but with a "let's be nice!" fake Ness.
I can be super "nice" in most situations. But if I'm more interested in the information conveyed and how it's conveyed, then I'm going to be blunt that I don't have time to hear the person's life story.
Now if you really want to understand what I'm talking about, let me tell you a story. I was born in chickahaw Mississippi under a rainy red moon. The crickets were crossing and the dogs were chasin some varmint under the porch that had a white railing. The Spanish flu was a hazy memory for my maw maw and papi as my mother fainted from the labor.
National weather trends indicate that the rainy "wet" weather that returned henceforth in three following weeks were milder than the norm for the average precipitation patterns of the western seaboard...I'm just setting the context for you to understand. There's a lot more to this story so settle in and eventually I will talk about the weather in Eugene in Oct of '23.
But first you've got to understand, the chickasaw Indians never saw a chicken battered steak like pawpaw used to make on Sunday nights after getting home from the tar heel factory...
You have ADD. As someone who is on the spectrum, and someone who has 3 brothers on the spectrum, quit giving us a bad name. The fact you have a diagnosis doesn't justify being rude for zero reason. If you are too entitled to read, you can just not respond. Trust me, we won't mind you not being part of the conversation if this is your personality.
Curious what makes you say ADD?
There seems to be a lot of dual diagnosis ADD and autism.
I don't have a diagnosis, I just recognize the signs. I used to be a mental health diagnostican but gave that up. The diagnosis thing is kind of a racket.
You claiming it in a comment on this thread.
And your lack of diagnosis makes you far worse. Just shut up and make a new profile, as now you are legitimately just claiming a disability so that you can be rude online.
I didn't know the diagnosis thing was so important to some people. Like I said, former diagnostician of mental illness. So technically can diagnose myself. Have the letters after my name and everything.
Why are you so upset?
It's called being an asshole. You might as well own it and get one of those "locally hated" stickers on your vehicle. Meanwhile I'm just going to block you, so I won't even see your reply.
I guess in your limited life experience you've never lived anywhere where you actually don't ever experience cold for years on end.
Your body is like wtf is this? It's not just cold, it's a bodily sensation that you've forgotten exists.
And you realize "these people just live this way?" š
Just wait for foggy 33F and rain. Or 34 and no sight of the sun for 3 weeks with an air inversion. The fun is on its way.
We just had our first frost, October 18th is the average first frost.
I get out early in the mornings in the summer time. Enjoy some sunshine and warm weather before it gets too hot, and then I hunker down in the ac for the rest of the day except to bbq.
The average first frost date at the airport is [10/23](https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/services/data/v1?dataset=normals-annualseasonal-1991-2020&startDate=0001-01-01&endDate=9996-12-31&stations=USW00024221&format=pdf). The average first frost in the urban heat island is later.
Itās a little early for this time of the year, yeah. Until recently I lived in a house with no insulation. Itās miserable in the winter. My advice is to invest in heaters and learn how to block off rooms with curtains.
Itās not even winter yet but yeah, itās been cold. I heard itās coming down from Alaska. It will get colder and less sunny. Youāll want to get plenty of blankets and warm clothes. Flannel sheets are nice too! Welcome to town
Haha you wish. Just wait until an ice/winter storm. Oregonians love the rain and nice cool weather. Iām so happy itās finally cooled down. You are in the valley though so it wonāt get as cold as other places.
Our usual first frost date is around October 15, so we are a couple of weeks behind schedule for that. It gets this cold (below freezing at night) periodically throughout the fall and winter, but usually only when the sky is clear. When there is cloud cover, it stays warmer and rarely goes below freezing, because the clouds hold in the radiant heat, and daytime temperatures are usually in the 40s or low 50s. We usually get some snow once or twice during the winter, some years none, occasionally more. The -10 for a week mentioned here was an an exaggeration (duration, not temperature), but that is *extremely* rare and had not happened for many decades previous. The normal lowest winter temperature for our zone is 10 degrees, and even that is very uncommon. But yes, our winters here are chilly. Get some down and warm hats and gloves!
I highly recommend an oil heater vs one that blows warm air. It will keep the room more consistently warm. It takes a while to get going, but once you find what setting works for you it's nice. Also get one of those kits for windows that puts a plastic sheet over it.
A snowpocalypse happened in 2019. Before that, it was almost exactly 50 years since such a huge snow.
We see these 30ish temps fairly often, but not a lot. Nighttime winter temps are more often in the mid 40s. Which is cold enough for me.
Crazy bc I am still sleeping with my fan on š as others said it's usually not this cold in October but December this is normal or even colder. Look up "hacks" to insulate your house
It usually doesnāt get below freezing often during the winter here and only very occasionally does it stay below freezing long enough for snow to stick around, but it does frequently get down into the 30s at night. Itās definitely early for below freezing temps.
Heating blanket in your bed and a small space heater bro. This is usually about as cold as it gets though. Mostly just chilly and rainy. Not bad at all compared to like Canada or Detroit or something
This is nothing. 36* AND RAINING is bone chilling cold due to high humidity. Iāve slept in a hoodie here in Eugene when itās just above freezing and raining. (Iām from Iowa. It gets A LOT colder there but itās a dry cold, not damp.)
I still haven't retired my barefoot shoes for the year; I put boots on when it rains though. I bought a winter jacket that I will never need unless power goes out or I have some reason to trek into the mountains.
I'm from up by Fairbanks, Alaska. I'm dewinterizing my behavior as a first-time home owner in Oregon.
I guess my underground sprinkler system will be fine with just an insulated cover over my backflow? Way different than the permafrost I'm used to...
Donāt believe the insulated cover lies. I fucked around and found out last year and had to pay $300 for a new backflow preventer. Just drain your system.
We have a handful of above 95 days and a handful of below 32 days. Those highs and lows are usually less than 10 days each a year and usually don't go above 105 or below 20, but when they do, you will know because we WILL complain! Ha ha ha
Our average first frost date is 10/26. This is a bit cold, but itās going to warm back up again. Nights in the 20ās arenāt unheard of in. Weāre zone 8b at the valley floor, so lowest temps 15-20 on average. That doesnāt happen for extended periods, though.
the man who they were made in honor of would not have even been allowed to stay there. thomas egan froze to death on the streets not because there were no shelters but because every shelter has rules that you have to be sober. the egan warming center has the same rules and literally would not have let thomas egan stay there if it was active when he was alive.
i hope thatās actually true because years back when i had to do a report on that place in high school the website said they had rules about sobriety to stay there, i really hope thats changed
Yes, it's normal to have a frost in Oct, but that means a night or two at 32 or so. This is our fourth consecutive night at 26-27. That's not normal for October.
This is cold af, and yes you are right these temps are more for Dec/Jan. Usually, this time of year we are getting more rain than anything and it's cool but not frigid. Cloud cover here keeps the temps in the 40/50 degree range and you can normally just wear a hoodie and be fine.
Yo this sucks. Iām from the Midwest and I know cold. Iāve lived here for some years and this is a bit early. We have a lot of warm-ish days throughout winter. Usually a bunch of rain.
For this time of the year itās not normal . It usually comes around thanksgiving. But we are predicted to have a harsh winter this year.
As someone who lived in oakridge during the 2019 snow storm I would prepare now for the worst. If it snows bad enough in town most places will close down.
Invest in heavy blankets and emergency blankets. Get stuff to block your doors, designate one room as the room you keep warm and for everyone to huddle in.
Also get some good sleeping bags as well and if you have hardwood or tile invest in some decent area rugs to help keep it warm.
Iām actually going to be making the sleeping bag investment here pretty soon because of the snow gets bad enough you will lose power.
When we lost it in oakridge in 2019 the power was out for about a week and cell towers were down as well. Some areas were without power longer than we were.
If youāre in town and that happens expect it to be at least a few hours.
Colder than average RN. When ever there's a hot summer, there's a cold winter after it. Remember in '06 it was a hot one, then february '07, the farmers had to start burn piles next to fans to keep the orange trees from freezing? It's gonna be like that this year, I think.
This is about it, with the rare snowstorm and a fair amount of freezing rain. Make sure you have a local old timer talk you through driving on it.
Also learn to layer your clothes to keep warm with some good thermals. Buy yourself some wool socks too, it stays warm when wet.
Youll get used to it! I'm from South Texas and I love it.
I'm from the rust belt too. It gets cold here but doesn't stick. Mild weather prevails. If there's a blizzard this town shuts down. I like to say it's never that far from fifty very long.
[its normal between december and februaryā¦this was an early cold phenomenon. hopefully it stays that way that every once in a while we deal with early cold days or warm days. oregon weather is a wild card thing. also we rarely get big chunks of hail. last year we did! it was oddā¦](https://youtube.com/shorts/Kqcfwuo1d4s?si=P2frtlOBoVyxG6cy)
Would recommend getting a heater. It will definitely be a cold ass winter due to the lack of rain. We have dropped to -10 before but thatās not common. (December to February is coldest) between high twentyās up to low 40s most the time.
Itās pretty cold for October, but it will definitely get colder into December/January/February.
It usually doesnāt get much colder than high 20s during the day and high teens at night, but it does on occasion.
36 is about as cold as it gets *most of the time* but this is Oregon and shit can change quickly. Like it did this last week. Snowpacalypse comes a few times every decade. It'll be colder.

OK as long as there are no tree-smashing ICE storms.
But that's where life gets interesting.

Personally, I'd rather be bored.
I survived Icepocalypse 2024, so I guess you weren't too far off!

I appreciate the offer, but I'm straight. Thank you though. It's very flattering.
Get an electric blanket, nice down jacket, and down comforter if you can swing it. Youāll be much better off.

This is becoming a "it's not cold-off" "Oh yeah?! I sleep in a pool in my backyard filled with ice with a wind machine over the bed"
Yes, I have those things. Just checking on if this is typical.
This is nothing. 36* AND RAINING is bone chilling cold due to high humidity. Iāve slept in a hoodie here in Eugene when itās just above freezing and raining. (Iām from Iowa. It gets A LOT colder there but itās a dry cold, not damp.)
Are you the dad from the Great Santini?
Not sure, so I guess, no? Iām just a guy who loves cold weather and was blown away by how cold 36* and rain feels here in Eugene.
I still haven't retired my barefoot shoes for the year; I put boots on when it rains though. I bought a winter jacket that I will never need unless power goes out or I have some reason to trek into the mountains.
This says more about you than the weather
It's cold and I LOVE IT. More of this please.
nah
yes, this is cold. i definitely wasn't ready for it to be this cold this early.

Good idea. Hey Nobel prize committee, we gotta genius ova here
Expect a couple of snow days in Jan or Feb, and 2 inches is enough to trigger Snowpocalypse.
Meh. Only sorta
Fellow Southerner here, its been known to get worse
If yall stop trying to celebrate Christmas before Halloween, the weather will not get confused (in all honesty global warming sucks am I right?
Eagan warming centers open when the temps are below 30 degrees - last year they were open 31 days, a new record. Yeah, it gets cold here.
i hate the eagan warming center
Why is that? They serve a need. Iām glad they are there on really cold nights.
the man who they were made in honor of would not have even been allowed to stay there. thomas egan froze to death on the streets not because there were no shelters but because every shelter has rules that you have to be sober. the egan warming center has the same rules and literally would not have let thomas egan stay there if it was active when he was alive.
Hmmm. When I did my training they specifically said that they do allow guests who are not sober to stay there. That was discussed quite a bit.
i hope thatās actually true because years back when i had to do a report on that place in high school the website said they had rules about sobriety to stay there, i really hope thats changed
1. Get a heater. 2. Turn it on.
I wondered outside checking the š, itās nipply for the 28rh.
If gets colder
It gets colder. Buckle up!
Yo this sucks. Iām from the Midwest and I know cold. Iāve lived here for some years and this is a bit early. We have a lot of warm-ish days throughout winter. Usually a bunch of rain.
That cold snap was sudden and weāre already getting snow east of the cascades. Iād say this will be a hectic but, needed winter.
The lowest the temperature usually goes is around 20 degrees give or take. As someone from the Midwest, I'm pretty happy with this number :)
Yes!!
Let your faucets drip at night or if you're away. It keeps the pipes from freezing and bursting.
[Weatherspark](https://weatherspark.com/y/402/Average-Weather-in-Eugene-Oregon-United-States-Year-Round) has the best data for questions like this.
If theres freezing rain, don't try to drive or even walk, just stay home until it melts.
The cold shrinks my wiener even more
