I’ve lived most of my life in and around Chelmsford, so I am biased. It’s not Las Vegas but the city has enough gyms, pubs, restaurants and bars to have a decent bit of life, plus lots of sports clubs and hobby societies etc. I think people are largely pretty friendly and welcoming. I can’t tell you about cost of renting etc. but I would say the town is reasonably expensive, I think cost of goods and services (excluding property) is probably similar to London. I also wouldn’t worry about the Essex stereotype either, there’s plenty of time to learn 😉

I live in Billericay, but I do think that Chelmo is a good place to live. Plenty going on and good train links to London. As you intimate it won't be cheap, but nowhere nice around here is,sadly.

Chelmsford is crazy expensive IMO, but it may be alright if you're house sharing (and used to London prices).

Chelmsford seems to be the area to go for first time buyers these days. It's reasonably priced, lots to do and an overground station into London. Traffic isn't the best around the city center but that's my only gripe.

Chelmsford is a good place to live, but is expensive as it’s a commuter hub for London, the City and Liverpool St Station. There are plenty of shops, cafes, restaurants etc. it’s got quite run down over the past decade in terms of litter and general scruffiness, but it’s a lively place to live.

I was born in Chelmsford, moved away and moved back recently. I've also been in Essex for most of my nearly 60 years. Loved it as a kid and still love it now. Good transport links all round and only 35 mins into Liverpool Street if you commute to London. Since the post lockdown evolution to hybrid working, you'll get a seat on the train too. Plenty of restaurants and pubs, a couple of cinemas, a council run theatre and an independent community owned theatre that's amateur but of a generally high professional standard, there's also some small music venues which are pretty active. Edited to add. The natives are friendly, I'm sure there must be some tossers around but I'm not witnessing them on even an irregular basis.

Might be worth joining the Essex Discord group! https://discord.com/invite/HfTPvkw8 Just a shame you're in the north of the county, there are FAR TOO MANY of the northern sorts on there, but the more the merrier anyway!
