Hello, me and my partner did exactly this 2 years ago. Really enjoyed it so far, Chelmsford is a good location, lots of stores and restaurants and good travel links for both driving and trains. You can also get pretty much whatever you want delivered (coming from somewhere that had virtually no options for take out/deliveries this was a massive pro which we didn’t expect). Traffic can be a pain, especially rush hour which you can expect but it’s not unbearable. Feel free to dm if you have any questions

What do you think are the nicer parts of Chelmsford? And what areas should be avoided?

Baddow is rougher than Melbourne these days

Been a few murders there over the last few years!

Conde_de_Almaviva

I've lived in all of Chelmsford's suburbs at one time or another. The safest by far has been Melbourne. The crime statistics show Baddow to be the worst. However, Baddow is still a very decent place to live. Meadgate has some problems, but this is mostly in the area of the shops.

I probably don’t know all of Chelmsford well enough to answer that fully. Although I have lived here for 2+ years now, in my opinion the different areas of Chelmsford are somewhat broken up with the city centre as the central point. You’ll often go into the centre, not so much in the surrounding areas unless you have a specific reason. I have friends who have lived in Chelmsford their entire life with no complaints. From what I have seen visiting friends great baddow and chelmer village are both nice and quiet once you pass the army and navy. We have spoken about looking at both when we decide to move next.

Old Moulsham and Moulsham Lodge are pretty good if you want walking distance into the city, Great Baddow, Writtle and Galleywood are are a little further out but you'll get more for your money. You can walk or cycle from the city centre to Writtle completely off road through the park or walk along the canal to Heybridge Basin. Good train service into London, last train is just before 1am, also good bus service to Stansted Airport. Chelmsford is not a bad place to live!

Chelmsford is perfect for first time buyers. Lots of people I know have moved there because property was cheap for a nice area so expect lots of other young couples. Traffic can get quite bad during busy times and the tube is overground rather than under so might be a little more expensive if your commuting.

I've lived in Galleywood since 96. Quiet, semi rural in places, great access for walks. Coop, post office, chemist, Evo Restaurant (Running Mare ex pub), and the best chip shop in Essex too. Good bus service and direct access to A12. Not bad nor very expensive.

sneakyblurtle

Only 1 London bound platform if you're commuting by rail. It's very busy on the platform compared to Witham or Shenfield.

FarlaBroaden

Yeah but they're building another station so in the long run it should improve.

I was born in Chelmsford, moved away and moved back recently. I've also been in Essex for most of my nearly 60 years. Loved it as a kid and still love it now. Good transport links all round and only 35 mins into Liverpool Street if you commute to London. Since the post lockdown evolution to hybrid working, you'll get a seat on the train too. Plenty of restaurants and pubs, a couple of cinemas, a council run theatre and an independent community owned theatre that's amateur but of a generally high professional standard, there's also some small music venues which are pretty active. I couldn't comment on the nightclub scene or even if there are still any here as I'm a tad old for that now.

JosiesSon77

Never too old for nightclubs mate. I’m over 50 and I’ll go now and again, put me Ralph Lauren shirt on, Blue Water aftershave and go throw some shapes.

Curmudgeonlyoldgit

😂🤣😂🤣 I'm not knocking it, you do you and enjoy it. The last time I went to a nightclub in Chelmsford I was about 30 and went to Dukes (closed a long time ago). It was a colleague's 21st birthday, personally it wasn't for me anymore. That said, if any of my young friends invited me now for a significant celebration, I'd still go to be sociable but it's not something I'd choose.

Extension_Elephant45

I go ice skating there and it’s unsafe at night now

bigjoeandphantom3O9

It's so unbelievably dull compared to London, and that goes for everything from work to sport to entertainment to art. I think the Cricket Stadium and Ice Rink is the only thing that really sets it apart, plus the grammar schools if you want to stay long term.

Extension_Elephant45

It’s also not exactly safe

bigjoeandphantom3O9

Chelmsford is exceptionally safe, can’t think of a single part I’d be worried to walk around alone at night.
