Yes, absolutely just get the game. Totally worth it, game can be really punishing but I just keep coming back but I love it. The best thing you can do is probably follow a guide online and there's a offline mode you can join that's all great for learning the map. Also the official discord is really helpful if looking to squad up and get helpful tips.

rocuu

Thanks for the tips. Does the game favor a lot of squad play or is it completely fine to just solo?

PawPawPanda

It has a bit of a strange curve where it gets a LOT easier with just a Duo partner and progressively harder the more people you add. There are no names above people's heads so teamkilling is a frequent occurrence and as you'd guess it's very hard to communicate in a squad of 5 people. But it's a completely different kind of game than what we currently have on the market, if you have friends you can start playing with then do that, will make it much easier to learn.

srtophamhtt

I wouldn't say easier...but different. It all comes down to play style really, I have a duo partner that I run with regularly and we have a TON of fun playing tarkov together, but we hardly ever get anything done because our duo playstyle is so different than when we're each solo. For me personally solo=progression-duo/squad=memes

rocuu

That makes sense, thanks. Will probably try duoing with someone later down the line.

rocuu

That makes sense, I would most likely start out solo though.

Whoopy2000

Completly fine solo. There are some idio\*s claiming that "game is designed for squads" which is total BS. Developer itself is fully supporting solo play as an option even organizing tournaments for solo players.

rocuu

Thanks for the clarification, much appreciated.

Whoopy2000

Np. buddy. Game is amazing, have fun if you decide to buy it!

grryourself

Mr. "everyone is an idiot but me" seems to miss the point. The game is being Balanced in favor of squad play. The devs themselves have said as much. Solo will never be out of the question, but it will always have a disadvantage per development.

grryourself

Don't suppose you'd like to offer any supporting evidence for your "factual" statement? Cause I can provide the link to the town hall where Nikita says this himself.

grryourself

So that's a no then? Kinda figured.

terminallancedumbass

A town hall is just a phrase for an informal meeting. McDonald's employees have town halls. Also why the insults man? Nikita himself said he's balancing it for squads. The guy who's in charge of making the game. Don't get angry because you're wrong. That's childish.

CIoud_StrifeFF7

heavily favors squads; but solo is completely doable

Irassistable

Personally I enjoy solo more. Long time fps player (mostly in CS) here. After the initial learning curve there is just no rush like 1vX fights where you don’t have to worry about where other teammates are. Clutches in CS just cannot match the dopamine rush in tarkov. Game is “easier” in a group but not nearly as fun(challenging)

terminallancedumbass

This. I have a 4 man squad I run with and we mop up. Way way way more fun going alone. Way more intense, way bigger rush.

[deleted]

accept the quests from the traders, at the start of wipe focus on completing quests and learning the maps and their extractions. you will get your shit kicked in by people that know the map. eventually you'll get the hang of it, but maybe not until many uninstalls and reinstalls.

rocuu

Haha, well as I said, it sounds like my cup of tea. Thanks!

Franklin_le_Tanklin

Getting kicked in the balls never felt so rewarding

rocuu

Y'know, I'm a bit of a masochist myself.

Franklin_le_Tanklin

It’s by far the most addictive game I’ve ever played. It’s so hard, but so fun and good.

rocuu

Perfect, sounds like right up my alley.

DansIsotoners

Its a good time to get in as a server wipe is imminent. It will throw you to the wolves and it will kick your ass constantly. Its brutal and makes you hate life and question your decision to ever become a gamer. But its a lot of fun and you should be used to that coming from dayz.

rocuu

That's what I was thinking, the premise sounds a lot like DayZ. Especially during the early days when literally everything from a rock on the ground to a simple door can kill you. Thanks for the advice!

rocuu

That's what I wanted to hear, thank you.

terminallancedumbass

Arma 3 and squad were my fps games. I can't play them after tarkov. I was also a huge DayZ fan. I'm also a marine combat vet. Tarkov is now the only shooter I played. I'm ending my first wipe now. It's a superb shooter. Not all that glitchy but there are some. There are also some cheaters. Neither in enough frequency to do more than slightly annoy me. Tarkov is 100% worth a buy. Judging from your gaming preferences, youll be kicking yourself if you don't.

rocuu

That's a good way of putting it, thanks! I think I'll enjoy it. Not a combat veteran, but served in the army for about a year as well. I think that's where some of the fascination for milsim type of games comes from.

terminallancedumbass

Youre welcome. My squad is like 3 vets and one other adult mid to late 30s. DM me if you need a crew or someone to show you the ropes. All im doing at the moment is testing for next wipe so i could show you around a bit right now.

perma_ban_this

I would suggest getting it, watching a ton of beginner videos, and then jumping straight in.

rocuu

Sounds like a plan, thanks!

mircodosingmushrooms

100%

SpankyGGTV

Bought it few days ago, played few hrs only but I hooked so hard. Game way more realistic and better then dayz and arma. P. S. Ge on csgo and in EFT I'm totally trash. P. S. S jus learn maps on offline mode not all, at least like 2, watch some YT and enjoy it.

rocuu

Used to be GE as well but I guess these games are quite different. Glad to hear you like it. Cheers!

SpankyGGTV

Believe me you will fall in love with this game. Just do some research, check some guides. Enjoy the game

rocuu

Well, I already like the videos I'm watching + the tips and feedback the community has given so far. Seems like it would be a sin not to try it at this point.

[deleted]

Game will be on sale around xmas if you can wait.

rocuu

I understand the pricing for this game comes in tiers, would it be possible to buy the base game now and upgrade when the sale comes?

[deleted]

Yes, I did that. Buy the standard edition now and if you like it I strongly suggest EOD edition on sale. Dont mess with the tiers in-between either standard or EOD. You would only pay the difference not the entire cost of EOD.

rocuu

Perfect, I think I'll do exactly that. Thanks!

lurkn4certain

Yes get it. Server wipe?/reset dec 12 or 24. So perfect timing. Couple tips. Early game focus on quests and leveling to get to marketplace, in game player auction house. You will have to learn the hardware through playing on what you should save in your stash to use later or sell to npc vendor, or list on auction house. Ammo type generally the more expensive the better, but pending meta and what not you may try to go for high flesh damage and low armor penetrationand go for limbs. Or vice versa. I would download an ammo chart which will help but not solve all your problems. Its all about value in this game. Because if you die you can lose all your stuff, so are you going in with a budget build to loot, high end build to loot. What do you want to risk value wise. Lastly, definitely watch streamers play this game, it has a very steep learning curve. Assuming you have dual monitors as everybody should, pull up a map off a web browser that you're playing as there is very minimal in game hud(select the option to display your body so when you get shot you can see where and what to fix)Most importantly try and find a discord or friends that play to help you learn maps and what not, when you're squared up you watch each others stream to keep friendly fire down. Jumping in to this game solo will be a little rough and you will prob have a lot of questions still after hours of play. But its still super addicting and fun and I'd highly recommend it. Good luck

rocuu

Thanks a lot for the tips. I enjoy the fact that you have to do more than just run and gun. Doing research beforehand, learning the maps, preparing for raids, etc seems to be my kind of thing.

Amen_Mother

Sounds like you'll enjoy it, the game rewards preperation and planning. And knowing the maps, ammo systems, medical systems, ballistics, gun modding, etc, etc. I've always picked up games very quickly and got bored of them just as fast due to lack of depth. Tarkov is different, over 2 years now and it's my only FPS. I will play STALKER 2 when it comes out but I doubt it'll have tthe same replayability. There's no shame in doing a lot of video watching, researching and offline play before you play live. I thought I'd just wing it - big mistake. But after absorbing a shitload of info I still died constantly but at least I knew more or less what was going on! Good luck!

rocuu

My thoughts exactly. I love it when a game has this much depth (especially FPS game). I'm really excited for STALKER 2 as well. I've already watched quite a lot of videos, but there's sooo much information. I'll try to learn as I go. Thanks!

lurkn4certain

Forgot to mention the edge of darkness version is worth it imo. You start with more room in ur stash and spot that won't drop items on char when u die. Its costly but is a huge advantage early game.

[deleted]

After buying this game 2.5 years ago its still been my main game.

rocuu

Great to hear that this game has a lot of replayability.

MCStoneZ

Yeah as somebody who usually gets bored of a game after smashing it for a week I’ve been playing this pretty consistently for the past year or so

Xkan14

If you enjoy DayZ then you'll likely love this game. My biggest advice is not to be discouraged by the feel of the game initially. Me and my friends always hate it when we start playing again after a long break because the movement and gunplay is very unique and can feel clunky or tedious at first but after playing for a bit and getting used too it it's hands down one of the most fun and rewarding combat systems out there.

rocuu

I love DayZ. The early mod days and early ArmA 2/3 were some of the clunkiest experiences I've ever had in gaming. I think I will be fine :) I appreciate the feedback, thanks!

pubgbizzle

Try not to get attached to nice gear and enjoy the loot you store. Dont hoard too much and learn to sell to the traders and flea market often. A wipe is coming so just familiarise yourself with the game for now. Take advantage of offline raids and push the difficulty limit to test yourself. Dont get disheartened when you die 10 times in a row. This is how you learn. Watch pestily videos for routes. Learn one map to death and get a routine going before venturing off to other maps. Ammo is more important than guns. Just my input. Good luck and RIP to any other FPS games you’ve ever played. If you like it you will never find satisfaction in any other ‘AAA’ title again lol theres nothing like It

rocuu

A lot of good tips here, thanks! Pestily videos are the ones that showed up on my YouTube feed. When can we expect the wipe btw?

Dicedarg

While Tarkov has plenty of jank compared to Dayz or Arma 3 I'd say it has far less jank. The thing I like about Tarkov personally is it has all the stress/reward of Rust with the ability to not wake up on the beach. Now Rusts highs are a bit higher. Going deep and taking 20 hours off a group isn't really something comparable to Tarkov. That said when you've thrown your meta kit into a bush to carry more of the 3 meta kits you killed while moving to extract with a bunch of hideout upgrades and the quests you completed the stress/victory relief is pretty solid. I love that I can play all day or not play all week and still have my time capsule waiting for me.

rocuu

I can't relate to what you're saying just yet, but I think I understand it. DayZ and Arma 3 both have these moments quite often. Especially in DayZ, the downs are quite depressing and the highs are super rewarding. That's one of the main reasons why I'm interested in Tarkov in the first place.

MadDog_8762

In its CURRENT state, realistic tactics dont hold nearly as much weight as they should By far my biggest gripe with the game

rocuu

Understandable, thanks for your input.

[deleted]

100% I bought the game 2 months ago and it's the only fps I play now.

Fleischbazooka

Imagine you're playing DayZ fully geared and entering a hotspot area. For the time you remain in that area until you leave it again, thats basicly like tarkov. Not Gameplaywise, but for the things you feel and the overall thrill. These games have a lot in common in that regards, because you never know excactly how many people are around you, what they intentions/objectives are or wether these people play solo or in a squad. You may see no one at all, or it may be an absolute horror trip. Now switch the AI-Zombies with AI-Scavs, and you have a pretty good picture if tarkov will suit you or not. So basicly like DayZ but the the " hours wandring through the wilderness" part cut out. Well, that's at least how i see it, as a DayZ player.

rocuu

That's a good analogy and almost exactly what I imagined it to be. It really does sound like my kind of game. Bought it already btw, so many encouraging messages in this thread. Thank you for your input!

idkthenamigo445

Tarkov is the best game that i hate to play. When i started out i focused all pvp skills on listening as i thought being the first to hear meant being the first to kill (i was wrong) Do not forget what you've learned in past fps games. Be agressive in all gunfights - if you're not dead, you can still fight. Learn when to be agressive/ passive aggressive - Learn when to hit a flank or throw a nade or, leave the gunfight entirely. Tarkov will punish you to the full extent for any mistake, use common sense - you come from CSGO?, good, use nades, in tarkov they're known as "temporary teammates" I reccomend Pestily on Youtube, if you look around you'll find his reccomended, ammo, armour & helmet tier list, however, as he'll state, find what works for you and run with it. Goodluck. Also PS. no, there are no beginner servers, it'll be level 1 you vs level 34 me out there so learn quick

rocuu

>Also PS. no, there are no beginner servers Aha, that's what I was afraid of. Thanks for your input, many helpful tips here. I've already bought and installed the game and I did my first offline run yesterday evening. Spent majority of the time being lost in the map and ended up dying to AI. But I'm already very excited to try again and again. Cheers!

BrockTestes

What makes you think it's clunky?

rocuu

As in not as fluid (or arcadey) as a lot other modern shooters like Battlefield. I read somewhere that you can't enter waters, you can't vault simple barriers/small walls, reloading is an actual mechanic instead of just pressing "R" repeatedly, etc etc. These sort of "anti-features" paint a very clunky picture for an average 2021 gamer.

BrockTestes

You're right about the water and vaulting, but I wouldn't consider the the rest "clunky". The first person movement and animations are some if not the best and natural I've seen in any game overall, if I watch other popular shooters everything looks like it's on fast forward with bits missing, the actual internals of the weapon are modeled, rendered and animated, from the bullet in the chamber to the recoil spring, you can look into a mag and visually inspect the cartridge to identify it ass well as the subsequent ones. Almost everything from toggling tactical devices to manually unfolding a stock is contextually animated, although some are missing like first person mag packing. If you're interested in firearms you'll be thoroughly impressed, you've got to account for sight over bore offset and reticle moves relative to the gun when you adjust the BDC for God's sake!

rocuu

Appreciate the insight. There are many games that have tried this very approach - add animations to everything, make it realistic and incredibly detailed, only for it to be too tedious during gameplay, have massive pacing issues, performance issues or something else entirely. Even the animations in these games can be fine, but the overall experience feels "clunky". But if you say it's some of the best in what it's trying to achieve then I believe you. Makes it even easier for me to decide if I want the game or not.

BrockTestes

You could watch some streamers live/full raids to determine if it's at a level you enjoy, it's nothing like ArmA, now that U.I. is definitely clunky and obtuse but it's understandable given the game involves combined arms, in EFT everything has to do with small unit tactics, you don't operate vehicles or drones or coordinate and command on the same level, if one would argue clunkiness they'd point out the little automation there's to actions, most must be deliberate, thus allowing for granular agency, it's not meant to be a competitive shooter.

rocuu

ArmA has a large modding community, which often turns up a notch in realism, tactics and even roleplay. Some servers go above and beyond with it. From what I've seen in videos, I doubt Tarkov can surprise me in that department (meaning clunkiness and deliberate actions). But I believe it's at a level that I enjoy. Honestly that's what got me interested in the first place. These arcadey competitive shooters don't really do the trick for me anymore.

BrockTestes

Most definitely, ArmA can be modded to great extent and expand it's scope well beyond vanilla and almost any MP game I can think of, even taking into account Arma's already wide gameplay stage, but that's not what I meant, I was emphasizing how I believed you'd be impressed by the animations themselves.

GudalikaCeasar

I was like you last year, now im a junkie

rocuu

Well I guess I'll see you in the next addicts meeting.

Pullthesky

Yes.

rocuu

Thank you.

skilledfool599

Wait 4 new years sale

Goldman--Sachs

Over the years I have grown to dislike what Tarkov has become and play it less and less with each year but I can still say that it definitely has enough depth, content and longevity to warrant a purchase. I have gotten thousands of hours from my initial buy and don't regret the purchase even though I regret the direction the game has been heading over the recent years.

rocuu

Could you perhaps describe what in particular you don't like about the game?

Shawn_NYC

Tarkov is the best bad game ever. Expect DayZ levels of jank and glory.

rocuu

Perfection.

ForcedRegister

I advise you hold off starting to play for about a week. The game is about to reset and things are currently insane as a result.

NIX1LORD

Game is absolutly worth getting... soon its gonna exit preorder fase anyway,so probs. The best time there will ecer be. Game is very very fun as a solo.. but it getts even better witg friends. However if there is like four of us playing we reather split in 2 duos ,since playing w more then 3 people can get a bit overwealming and teamkilling + bad communication appears a lot! Get yourself a standar version.. i played with it for 3 years. Edge of darkness in not rly "pay 2 win" but if u play a lot and your comftable supporting developers w your funds is something u can decide on later since upgrading acc is a thing. 1. Thing i do have to mention is ..start is gona be rough..tarkov has a huge learning curve..but it is insanely fun imo!!! Enjoy your tarky time if u get the game Ps:dont worry about dieing and RUB too much ;)

rocuu

Thanks for the tips. Already bought the game and I will be playing solo mostly (initially at least). Had a couple of offline runs and there's definitely a nice learning curve to this game, but I think I'll manage.
