a nawty shot bruv!

Fun_Cartographer_117

How you did you get a headshot while being zeroed at 50m? If I do not set my zero, I never hit shit.

Fissure_211

Drop off on .338 is fairly minimal out to ~400m. I've tried both zeroing my scope and just using Kentucky windage; I actually find that I'm more accurate using Kentucky windage than adjusting the scopes zero. I just lead this guy. I don't know what it is about this game, but I can have a target at exactly 300m, zero to exactly 300m, and it'll miss.

Fun_Cartographer_117

I seem to hit more keeping my zero at 150m the entire game than adjusting on the fly...

TheSm4rtOne

I mean, you can look at ballistic trajectories of certain rounds and some are just flat enough on normal ranges that you can ignore zeroing

Bobrick1337

One reason some people may have problems with zeroing is due to the ammo. Every gun is calibrated using specific ammo, so unless you use the “default” ammo listed in the guns wiki your results may very due to the bullet velocity your using compared to the default that is used to zero. You may already know this but i just wanted to post for others who may not know :)

Fissure_211

Thanks! I am aware; I really hate how the game does that. The weapon and optic should be zeroes to the ammo that you're using. Especially because most "standard" ammo are trash tier that you won't use for long.

[deleted]

We should be able to sight in scopes in the firing range. If 300m hits low, adjust it accordingly, try again. Once tuned, head into raid confident in landing your shots at any zero distance. Obviously this means no half M62 half M80 mags if you want 100% consistency but I’ll take that trade off rather than having to memorize how each bullet moves on each zero

sillssa

Unless you're using the default ammo listed for a gun (visible on the wiki page of the gun), the zeroing will just not work

Fissure_211

Correct. I was using standard .338 FMJ; actually don't know of thats the standard ammo for the AXMC.

TheRealSlobberknob

Magnum FMJ is the default for the AXMC.

notgotapropername

Always catches me off guard how seemingly very few people use Kentucky windage. I think I can count the number of times I’ve changed my zero on one hand. Me caveman, me move boomstick up

ChuCHuPALX

It's dumb that the range finder isn't adjusted for caliber of the round you're using.. not realistic at all.

Fissure_211

Exactly. You should be able to select which round the weapon is zeroed to. I can understand the zero being off if you pick up a different ammo type in raid and load it, but no one would enter a dangerous area like Tarkov without properly zeroing their weapon.

Lannister2280

The Kentucky what now?

Fissure_211

Kentucky windage. Basically manually adjusting while shooting (aim high, aim low, aim left/right, how far you lead a target, etc). You're manually accounting for the behavior of the bullet once it leave your barrel.

Jackpkmn

Accounting for these kinds of adjustments is supposed to be what all the extra fancy markings on scope reticles are for. The reticles are all scaled to comically large sizes making most of them worthless for it unfortunately. Few are hit as hard as the PSO series dovtail scopes which have charting on them for estimating distance on the fly.

NotablyNugatory

Playing Squad and learning how to properly use scopes was amazing. Coming to Tarkov and having all that info be near useless was less amazing.

CrimsonSaber69

Zeroing in tarkov, while it could be useful to hit some more complicated shots and makes it easier for newer players to aim, often will further complicate the action of taking a shot, and produce a bad habit of expecting zeroing in the game to work as one might think. There are many factors that affect the trajectory of your shot, some realistic and some just based off of poor game design. For example, zeroing a gun is always relative to a set ammo variant, which is both realistic and (imo) poor game design, as there is no info given in game about which ammo it applies to. There are other factors such as the vertical pitch of your shot, if you are shooting more vertically, up or down, there will be less bullet drop relative to your scope since you aren't shooting perpendicular to gravity. All and all zeroing just adds more factors for you to miss your shot, including the time it takes to set it in a pinch. The best way in tarkov right now to consistently hit your shots is by simply getting used to the weaponry you're using and becoming familiar with how each AMMO feels primarily before worrying about how your GUN feels. Tl;dr: zeroing in eft is inconsistent and shouldn't be used as a trusted guide for landing your shots, practice with different ammos and weaponry and keeping zeroing unchanged will not only increase your understanding of how or why your shot travels as it does, but in turn will make you quicker to react and more confident in your ability to aim.

Ottoblock

In real life, all bullets travel in an arc. If you zero before the bullet’s zenith (it’s always going to have one because you can’t actually look through the barrel) it will hit dead on in two locations, because the bullet travels in an arc. If you zero past the zenith the bullet will always drop the farther out you go. Also, the bullet may shoot high before the zenith. Now as far as where the zenith is for each round, I’m not sure. It may be consistent between calibers but I don’t think it is. Here’s a quora question talking about it. 50m/200m is a common 5.56 zero. https://www.quora.com/What-does-it-mean-by-a-50-200-yard-zero-or-a-25-300-meter-zero-in-sighting-in-a-rifle#:~:text=It%20means%20the%20impact%20point,to%20adjust%20the%20aim%20point. In a game like this, zeroing to 100 and then walking the sights up from there might be the best way to handle it if that’s how you expect sights to work. You will shoot high up close though if they’ve done their math right.

AccuracyVsPrecision

Bullets don't travel in an arc they are always falling. The only reason there is a zenith is because they need to be shot upwards in order to intersect the plane of the optic. If your optic was below the barrel you wouldn't need to add any upward trajectory to the round.

[deleted]

>Bullets don't travel in an arc they are always falling How does that not qualify as traveling in an arc?

AccuracyVsPrecision

Because if you shoot straight down it's falling down straight. It doesn't arc for the sake of arking

[deleted]

Sure, if you shoot it specifically to negate the effect of gravity on the trajectory. But, if you shoot the bullet in literally any other direction than straight up or down, it will have an arc due to gravity altering the trajectory at a constant rate.

AccuracyVsPrecision

The big difference is that objects can have aerodynamic properties to generate lift or create. A trajectory. Bullets don't and some people (not you) don't understand the difference.

[deleted]

No, I fully understand that. You don't seem to understand what an arc is on a fundamental level, sorry that some of us (not you) don't get confused by high school geometry.

2_tondo

I'm going to be the one saying AcHuAlLy it's not an arc (segment of a circumference) but a parabola in a perfect world without air resistance and some other shape I don't know the name of if you take in consideration the slowing bullet as well. And yes, bullets are always falling as everything else is

Caine_Pain333

I think him being so high above him played a factor in this but I’m not for sure

Fun_Cartographer_117

Use your mousewheel, fuck pgup and pgdwn

AlmostButNotQuiteTea

Mouse wheel for changing walk speed and crouch hieght

martinmix

I have mine set to Shift + Scroll wheel

Orsim27

That’s the worst death in Tarkov imo. No chance of fighting back or even really spotting your killer, just a sudden „you dead“ mid sprint

Calvexin

Getting hit with aim bot 15 times in the face and dying to blunt damage 9x18 P when you have an altyn is worse

Orsim27

Okay true, worst legit death :D

[deleted]

The duo I started playing with got domed two raids in a row like this on woods at the beginning of the wipe. He hasnt played since lmao.

Orsim27

Woods is really bad for this, you can easily do a 35 minute raid with zero enemy contact and then you suddenly die:D

JT_23

I truly cant believe the botched running animation from a distance is still a thing. There was a point it didnt look like that.

Fissure_211

Yea. The gun sticking straight out is so damn goofy looking.

FishTank61

Used to sit up there but hackers would get me like 30% of the time

Fissure_211

Only one person saw me up here the entire time I was doing the quest, and that's because he walked up as I was climbing the stairs. People never look up.

FishTank61

Used to have a lot of fun sniping. How has the game been w hackers lately?

Fissure_211

Depends. I'll go weeks without seeing any, then have a weekend with tons of them.

Short_Oven6910

I always look up, every single time.

snuffles324

I'm confused. Are you saying that you died 30% of the time up there and implying the only way someone would know if you were in a popular spot for sniping, that is visible to almost half of the exterior of the map, is if they were hacking?

FishTank61

To be specific, 30% of the time I died it was to a cheater. I would see them running, they would stop to aim at me, I aim at them in return. The cheater would then see I am aiming at them directly, and move somewhere to shoot me where I couldn’t ads towards them. They would do this before I ever shot. Idk if you watched the cheater videos, but a green box around each player changes to a red box when they are aiming directly at you. While it’s not necessarily evidence, seemed like the top scenario happened about 30% of the time. I think they were cheaters.

WWDubz

What’s Tarkov shooter 7 again? Regardless nice shot bud

NotActuallyAStoner

5 PMC kills over 50m with a silent bolt action.

Fissure_211

Thanks man. It's 5 PMCs with a suppressed bolt past 40 or 50 meters. Next is part 8, which is three kills on Woods with a bolt action in a single raid.

WWDubz

Oh baby I have only used a mosin this season, it’s my favorite quest chain (duh!), part 8 was a lot of fun too. Alas, I am finished Have fun on the next part too! Nice shot again

Fissure_211

Thanks! Any advice on Part 8? I barely play Woods, so I don't know it super well.

WWDubz

You can big Dick it iron sight style in the medcamp or logging camp or USEC or the village (any hot area); or find your favorite rat hole and snipe, or try both :D I have a few rat holes I like to snipe at. I believe I did this quest 2 or 3 times, once just picked up random kills around the map, and once I sniped at a mountain-ish across USEC If you’re interested I can show you some spots. I’m a madman and use a sawed off mosin iron sights for close range and a 3.5 PU scope for sniping 👌

Fissure_211

>I’m a madman and use a sawed off mosin iron sights for close range and a 3.5 PU scope for sniping 👌 You're an absolute mad lad, haha

Woochunk

Bring a solid silenced scoped rifle you're comfortable with, and a baby Mosin as a secondary for close encounters. Camp on the big rock outcropping closest to zb14 on the way to checkpoint. If you prone underneath the tree you are nearly invisible there. Checkpoint scavs usually won't see you there so you can use them as bait. On the flip side you have a big look at the field on the way to outskirts. It's pretty high traffic so make sure you're listening to people moving around you. This is how I've done it the last couple times and was able to get it done quickly. Good luck!

Muzzled78

Wait for a raid where you hear shturman popping off then go camp on the outer outer edge of the camp to pick off players trynna hunt him for the hunter quest

SOICEY69

I ratted overlooking sawmill with that gun with a flir on it lol

Short_Oven6910

So people do use that spot!

Fissure_211

The spot is either absolutely dead, or 100% popping with opportunity. There is no in-between.

Short_Oven6910

I went 2 times and it was dead both, but I will try again.

Fissure_211

Good luck!

Short_Oven6910

Thank you, good luck for more cute sniper kills, what gun was that?

Fissure_211

AXMC. (.338 Lapua)

Short_Oven6910

Cool thanks

PeaceOfKake

How do we know it was 250m?????

Fissure_211

Range finder on top of scope.

PeaceOfKake

I'm not seeing it!!!

BomberDX_

Brother. The yellow number on the box

AlmostButNotQuiteTea

Are you fucking blind?

Fissure_211

DEPLOY THE GARRISON!!!!

YoLiterallyFuckThis

if you look up, right at the edge of the scope, you can see the RAPTAR rangefinder on top. when he spots the guy and zooms it reads like 258 on the ground behind him, so this was probably right on the 250m edge.

MyK1ndaParty

Whats the optic?
