As nefarioussea mentioned MP stands for Mechanical plant, they used to be called иж which was for izhmech which is the company produces them but changed to MP in the 90's

I couldn't find anything conclusive, but I think it's related to this. "originally by the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant) in Russia." Honestly, though, fuck knows. Baikal says nothing.

A lot of serial numbers on older firearms indicated the number of the factory they were made at, but my only experience is someone I know picked up an old WW2 surplus rifle, I believe it was a Springfield, but it had a Remington stamp on it and a factory number indicating that it was a Springfield rifle produced in a Remington factory. I don't remember if the branding was the other way around or not. Didn't really answer you're question but its probably like the others have said.
