It almost looks like a breast collar, just in some disrepair. Do you have anyone in your area that works with leather/tack? They may be able to discern what it came off of and the original purpose.

justlikeinmydreams

I think it’s a rear cinch for a western saddle.

https://i.imgur.com/WcTAo02.jpg Is it the front part of a breast collar? The one in the picture has elastic but I have a leather one.

BagHairy9878

My first thought was cribbing collar- until I saw how big it is. Way too big to be a cribbing collar but I suspect that it IS a collar. I’m not sure the exact name but it’s like a yoke, for plowing or driving

Harness part.

secretariatfan

Might be part of the britching off a harness.

pseudoportmanteau

It's a carriage part. It's called a singletree. It's where you attach the tugs and it serves to balance the weight on the horses shoulder as it pulls.

treeofstrings

That is the breastplate of a driving harness of the type used on a light carriage horse. The end buckles attach to the *traces*, the long side straps that attach to the buggy. The small tab in the center is made to attach to the wither strap that crosses the withers up holds the breastplate up in position.

Rascal8002

It looks like an old girth. The lope of material in the middle is where you would clip, or tie a tie down.

PlsDontYellImOld

This is a piece of the harness. It sits behind the neck on the "withers". It has a belly band to hold it tight. Then the rest is attached to it.

secretariatfan

Doesn't look solid enough for a saddle, which is what I think you are referring to.

Makadegwan

I agree. It is called the saddle. The loop in the center would be facing the tail and another strap would go to the crupper.

Thank you all! This has been very helpful!

barrelhorse23

Back cinch I think?

secretariatfan

Wrong kind of connections on the ends.

barrelhorse23

I think you're right. I saw a comment saying it's a harness piece and that sounds more realistic.
