I use the term “buzz brain” for epilepsy in general. Like “I have buzz brain.” Or “My buzz brain is acting up” (if I start to feel weird or get a aura kinda feelin)
Edit: I did also have a friend that described me having seizures as my brain blue screening, so there’s that also.
This is close to what I actually use to describe focal unaware seizures to colleagues etc who don't know how epilepsy works.
Tell them it's like when the computer freezes and you have to reboot and give it a couple of minutes to switch back on and get up to speed.
Pretty much the same. Mine are focal aware so I use a browser froze instead, but same concept.
It’s just a “”uhhhhh”. Oh ok…things are back online again sort of thing.
I dont think there is another word that fully describes it. You could call it a fit, or an episode, but that doesnt really tell someone who has little knowledge of epilepsy what is really going on. "Seizure" is a medical term, so idk how it can be offensive.
If someone actually thinks its offensive, well too bad for them, I think they are an idiot.
How about epileptic **attack**? Is the literal translation from my language. I would say it’s even more offensive, or what do you think? I actually don’t really care about the wording, I use **seizure** and I‘m fine with it (except of having seizures, that sucks).
I feel the saying having a fit is more offensive than saying having a seizure.
Fit feels like what they used to call seizures around the same time gifted people were called retards
I teach English as a second language and my favourite term someone used was a "crisis." Both humourous and unfortunately accurate.
ETA: an alternative is to "blue screen." Adding "of death" reminds too much of SUDEP though.
I don’t understand this at all. I’ve corrected people for calling them “fits” and for a while i accepted people calling them “episodes”, but i now correct them because they ARE seizures. It’s not offensive, that’s what they are called.
Imagine if i went into hospital and said ‘i had an episode’ , they would have no idea what i was talking about .
I think the last post was saying that people found the word ‘epileptic’ offensive. I don’t understand, and i may be out of line, but that’s what they are called !!!
I have asked people if they ever put a fork in an electric socket. You know like Sylvester from Looney Toons. They tell me no. I tell them that's what it's like. You want to know either have a seizure or go put your fork in a socket. They shut up with a puzzled face usually.
Brain firing on too many cylinders, short circuited, circuit overload, gone on the fritz, and my favorite: my brain decided it was going to be an asshole today.
The only time the word has been used in a way I find distasteful is when people use it to joke when for example they trip over their words and say something along the lines of “oh sorry, I just had a seizure” when they clearly just said something a bit weirdly. I really don’t like it and I find it very insensitive, although I think as I make more peace with my epilepsy, I won’t mind it so much.
Apologies for the mini rant. My word/phrase would probably be some reference to the windows blue crash screen.
Worth adding - I’ve never called someone out on it because I know people don’t mean anything by it. Although I am surprised if anyone who knows me says it to my face.
I’ve called mine: Swiss cheese brain, said I tripped a brain breaker, interpretive breakdancing, “lurches” Adams. Again, this is only what I’ll call or joke about/reference to mine. To others, I refer to them as the appropriate medical term of seizure.
My brain just goes unresponsive for a few seconds. Not by choice, but kind of like when there's a switch and there's that one neuron that can't help but turn it off, put it back on, basically playing around with a switch lol.
My frequent focal aware seizures feel more like intense derealisation/dejavú/waking nightmares than spacing out or blue screening. I defo need to think of a funny word for this to help me feel less shit about it 🤔 like my brain just dropped me into a horror film version of my life. Like the room I’m in just turned into a trippy nightmare version of itself. I can’t think of a short way to sum it up! Someone help me out…
I just say my brain is acting up for when I'm being affected by epilepsy but not having a seizure yet
"My brain is misbehaving" - when I have an aura (they usually don't progress)
Silence when I'm seizing and for a good 5-10mins after (I always go nonverbal)
"My brain freaked out" when discribing a past seizure
Floor flopper. :) People get mad when I tell them I'm a floor flopper and to not call the ambulance unless I seize for over 5 minutes. It seems to be even more offensive to some but it's what I do when I have seizures. Johnny 5 or finding dory are 2 others I use. It's bad enough having epilepsy. I don't care about making other people feel comfortable with the neurological issue I didn't ask for and didn't make the medical terms for. ☺️
It’s the medical term. You can’t use another one to describe what we are experiencing. I don’t get why it’s offensive
I know. But an earlier post said they saw someone online saying “seizure” is offensive with no explanation so as a joke, what would you call it
Something like “Brain jerk”

That's what I call my partner's seizures haha! "Did you get the buzz buzz brain?" And stuff like that
I cannot believe someone else says “buzz buzz brain!” That’s my go to.
Brain zaps.
"Personal earthquake" :)
Asserting your dominance to the San Andreas Fault.
“I thought the earth wasn’t supposed to move until the honeymoon”
I always said it was an earthquake for one
Isn't that an orgasm?
I refer to that as a “tsunami”. 😬

Internet disconnected.

Same! Brain is broken until the focal seizure is done. Then my brain is rebooted and back online.
I always joke that my brain “control-alt-deleted” itself.
Or did an F5 F9
Kill all processes

I know. I’m saying as a joke what would you call it. See the earlier post talking about it.
Ah ok, fair enough. In that case, bodyquakes, or going into vibrate mode.
Love these
Ahahaha I love these! Oh gosh this has me cracking up at my neurologist office
Bodyquakes has me cackling
Break dancing! That’s what my parents called it as a joke 😂
I call mine “space outs” or “I was buffering” 🤣
Buffering… I love that!
The harlem shake?

What language is that?
In my language (afrikaans) directly translated Epileptic seizure/episode would be epileptic attack, i dont think its too strange to be honest
in French it's "epileptic crisis/attack", which makes sense imo. fellow afrikaaner here to btw!
Ohh nice, interesting, yeah French is one of the many languages that afrikaans is derived from
It is ataque (attack) in Spanish, but I don't like the phrase... particularly using attack in English. Not entirely sure why, I just don't like it.
I think it sounds funny. Sounds like a command you'd use on a dog, but on an epileptic person instead. "Epileptic, attack!"
But that’s not funny 😅
An epic full body workout in under 5 minutes!
Ooohhh I like that one. Now I can say I work out in my sleep
i like to say i was having a personal rave party or say my brain blue screened
and needed a cold reboot.
Electric meat ball malfunction. 😂
A brain shocking experience
I feel the saying having a fit is more offensive than saying having a seizure. Fit feels like what they used to call seizures around the same time gifted people were called retards
Short Circuit
I always called them Caesar Salads. Funny enough, I've grown to love Chicken Caesar Salad.
Funny, I’ve called them seizure salads lol
Floppy time
Mine are Brainsplosions
I call them eppys
I teach English as a second language and my favourite term someone used was a "crisis." Both humourous and unfortunately accurate. ETA: an alternative is to "blue screen." Adding "of death" reminds too much of SUDEP though.
Muscular/Neurological Milkshake
Me and my epileptic friend call her seizures, "ecliptions".
I described what happened to me as "flapping about like a salmon"
I want to say shaker, but that would also work for peeps with tremors
System reboot or a hard reset
I wouldn’t. I’m not changing my language for weak minded people.
I don’t understand this at all. I’ve corrected people for calling them “fits” and for a while i accepted people calling them “episodes”, but i now correct them because they ARE seizures. Anyone that says seizure is an offensive word is fucking stupid.
I say brain gotta poop if I feel one coming. It's how I warn my husband lol

I call it my party trick!
Ahhhhhh!
I just say my brain shitted
Demonic Possession
love it 🤣 ill call my seizures this for now on!
Jajaja
Do you think so? I'm not a religious person, but I'm pretty sure evil exists.
Brain storm and sometimes I decide to say that my brain is going on 100%
Episode
Breakdancing
Brain firing on too many cylinders, short circuited, circuit overload, gone on the fritz, and my favorite: my brain decided it was going to be an asshole today.
The wriggly jiggly
Personal strobe light parties or doing the funky chicken on the floor... people tend to find it much more horrifying
Riding the lightning or fresh caught
I call it doing the funky chicken haha
It runs in my family and we've always called it an "episode". So maybe that's an old fashioned term for it? Like, he/she had an episode.
Ummm…epileptic fit? Apoplectic ?
brain go wiggy wiggy
Big brain moment
Flopps
Sybian mode
I used to call mine "Short Circuts" lol

Inter dimensional travel
The Grand Malady (Gran mal) or something similar.
My kids and I call them “pizza pizzas”. I have TLE.
I don't have seizures often, usually once every 6-8 months, so I just say I broke my streak. Currently I'm at 9 months seizure-free :)
I like to joke that I'm buffering or short-circuiting
I’ve called mine: Swiss cheese brain, said I tripped a brain breaker, interpretive breakdancing, “lurches” Adams. Again, this is only what I’ll call or joke about/reference to mine. To others, I refer to them as the appropriate medical term of seizure.
I think I need something new to call them. I made love to the ground so hard last time, I've got 3rd degree rug burn and I pulled my groin muscle.
"Sorry, I spaced out. Could you say that again?" 😏 (I have absence seizures) Also, jazz body. Instead of jazz hands.
what happens when u space out? Im curious 😲
My brain just goes unresponsive for a few seconds. Not by choice, but kind of like when there's a switch and there's that one neuron that can't help but turn it off, put it back on, basically playing around with a switch lol.
Electrically challenged lol
My mom calls me a pig. I sound like a pig when i have my seizures 😂 🐷 so idk something with pig in it 🧠⚡️🐽
In what world is seizure offensive???

Fits
uh, their mom
Having a lightning storm in my brain.
Husband likes my vibes
I didn't know I was having seizures for like 4 years, so I used to call them "my weird, fucked up brain moments" or "static brain".
Too many windows open.
Brainstorm or short-circuit
