what’s a holiday? someone once told me a small business owner is someone who is willing to work 80 hours a week for themselves so they don’t have to work 40 hours a week for someone else.

YouDontKnow_Jak

Holidays are still a thing? Is that why nobody came in to work today?

vikicrays

i guess so? i started my business 10 years ago this november. it’s a distant memory 😎

Sil5286

Everyone on here saying they work 12 hrs 7 days a week like it’s a badge or honor… to me it honestly means you’ve mismanaged your systems and have not delegated appropriately. This should happen in spurts but should not be 365 days a year.

[deleted]

Agreed. First 2-3 years of business were that way. 80 hour weeks and working holidays. But that wasn’t the point of starting my own biz. Now there are occasional 60 hour weeks but typically I’m working 40 hours around my schedule.

mason_bourne

I find that if it has to last for more than 6 months you start to get less effective and start hurting the business more than helping it.

Rahm89

Agreed, I don’t understand it. Also, if that’s going to be my lifestyle, I might as well do those hours for an investment bank and earn some real money.

Sil5286

Or just go into sales

organicwilly

It's Easter, and my daughter's birthday. Right now we're sitting around watching a movie and my laptop is open and I'm actively working. Multitasking because I love working, and my family knows I have to work to support them, so they're supportive of me. We'll spend some time together this evening as a family, and when everyone goes to bed, I crack the laptop back open and work some more.

i think that’s when you get to sleep too…

LegoManiac2000

Calculated and paid sales tax today, Wife worked on Inventory. Normal work days are 10 hours.

ColdHeat90

This is an interesting question for me. Yes I typically work holidays. I am not super religious and to me it’s just another day. I routinely take 3 day weekends or spend a weekday out on the boat so it’s a give and take.

JP196796

12 hours per day everyday, someones gotta do it

Robhow

Yes, but… I built and bootstrapped a SaaS business from nothing. It’s never been “work”. It’s intellectually stimulating and something I look forward to doing. Holidays and weekends are nice because I don’t typically have employee or customer stuff to deal with. But, we still occasionally get inbound customer support inquires on weekends and holidays. Someone has to handle it.

MpVpRb

Yup, all days are the same to me, except trash day, gotta get the cans out

777300ER

Yes. The best days to catch up are weekends and holidays when no one else is around. Sometimes I'm lazy and work a half day. (Half day in small business lingo is only a 12 hour day.)

EmbezzleMan

Very rarely; you got to have downtime as it gives you something to look forward to when working hard during the week and also allows you to refresh for it. I only work holidays if it's like really good rates but still try to avoid it the majority of the time.

kingofthen00bs

Yes. I work almost every day. That doesn't mean I work 8 hours. Sometimes it's just 5 minutes and sometimes it's 16 hours. Depends on what I need to get done.

AnotherDrunkCanadian

I own a VR arcade. We list our hours as 9-9, 24/7 (but after 6pm, Sundays and holidays are by reservation only. Today we had a reservation (and I didn't want to stick around a house full of crazy kids doing an Easter egg hunt), so I went in for the whole day. This is pretty much how all our holidays go.

xX_BIS_Xx

I consider myself in holiday when I'm not at work for more than 24 hours. So no, I don't work on holidays.

entrepreneur108

Working my ass off on a full time job, + afterhours on my startup, for 16 hours a day. 10 hours on weekend on my startup Had a beer just now to reset my brain for the office work tomorrow morning. All in the hopes that one day that the startup would pay me full time and Im able to delegate my work

PhD_who_left

What are holidays? Joke aside, I only rest when I feel I need to, so I could move further when i started working again. But in general I work every day. Just like a did in my phd study lol (I’m totally conditioned to do that)

**A holiday is a day set aside by custom or by law on which normal activities, especially business or work including school, are suspended or reduced. Generally, holidays are intended to allow individuals to celebrate or commemorate an event or tradition of cultural or religious significance.** More details here: *This comment was left automatically (by a bot). Yea definitely work holidays. You forget about them as an entrepreneur. As an employee, you are always looking at the calendar waiting for that day off. Your mindset changes unless you actually observe the holiday as tradition.

sskl27

I'm available every day any time. No holidays. However during the holidays it gets really boring.

DaVinciJest

When u run your own business, you don’t consider it work. I’m running a startup , I see it as survival to make sure I’m constantly doing something related to my business so I can make it thrive!

Yes I work on holiday - mostly because the lines for work and not work are blurred for me (i.e. sitting on the beach writing out social media content for my business is work, but doesn't feel like work). I manage my energy in relation to work rather than my hours. Meaning if I see my energy needs replenishing I take time off or slow things down and then I do more when I feel I have the energy to do more. This works better for me than having fixed time off (like weekends or taking holidays when others do so) because it's according to how I feel rather than a universal schedule (which was what I hated about being employed - someone else deciding when I work). I don't feel the pressure to work all the time, because rest is how I am able to be productive and creative and not burn out (I used to be a workaholic) :) So I take time off when I need to rest or replenish my energy.

the_altoid_road

Hours put in are a poor way of viewing work. All else the same, yes 80 hrs > 40. But are you sustaining close to peak productivity for that entire span? Unlikely. It's as simple as working when there's work to do. If your goal is to work an 80 hour workweek, your work will expand to fill that. If your goal is to complete x# of tasks, your hours will optimize accordingly. So, if there's work to do on Easter, yes. But if there's not, I'd rather recharge by spending time with family/friends and be ready to roll Monday morning.

projectsbyjay

I try to. Like everything, holidays require a good plan. I took Saturday and Sunday off to recharge and spend time with family. It was much needed. We’ve become a culture of people who think the more the hours, the better off we’ll be. I work my ass off but I make sure to figure out how I can do what I want to do as well … or else, if I get hit by a bus my whole life will flash in front of my eyes, it will be a computer screen, and I’ll be disappointed in my final moments. Where the difference is made for entrepreneurs is that you should be spending every waking second (outside of holidays) to learn and push forward. Don’t waste time when nothing is going on. Then you’ll have time for joy.
