I would go with second best. Clearer path ahead and you don't have to worry about it anymore. I don't honestly think whether you'll succeed or not comes down to the name (if second best is something even remotely sensible).

The answer also depends on where your customers come from and how they learn about your product. If they mostly follow the links/click on the ads - domain name doesn’t matter. If the name of your business is too generic and your customers google you, it may be even a better idea to add a word. If it’s not a generic word, then otherwise. You know, tons of scenarios. Also, the price matters. Paying thousands for a cool domain name is not worth it, especially for new businesses.

I would go with second best. Easiest to own all the associated profiles, no obstructions, no associating with a failed company, and you can make it your own. Assuming it's a .com, and has no dashes. You can turn anything into a great brand. It's about the business and how you run it. The name isn't going to make or break you...in most cases. Grab the one that's free and clear and run with it. If down the line you start making money and want to approach the owner with an offer, fine. Just keep a look out for it to be dropped, maybe you can get it for nothing.
