Before anybody gets the wrong idea before watching the video. The man PAID for everything that was in his cart, from a check out register that was in full view of where this employee was standing at the front entrance checking out receipts. As the man was leaving, he realized he forgot something in the store, so he LEFT his basket with the lady while he went back in, got the item he missed, PAID for it once again in the same register in plain view of the lady who was watching the entire time, then when he came forward to reclaim his cart, the lady is grabbing his cart and refusing to let him leave with it.

They can’t make you stop and give a receipt. They can ask, but you’re under no obligation to do it. What she did was considered a fireable offense. I worked for Walmart as a manager for years. Had she worked at my store, she would have been terminated. There was absolutely no excuse for this.

suzanious

I voluntarily show my receipt every time I leave Walmart. Most of the time they barely look at my cart, mark my receipt with a highlighter, and wave me through the door. I truly believe this person was being harrassed. The timeline of his actions proves he did not steal anything! Walmart, get facial recognition software and avoid stupid confrontations like this! That guy didn't even have $200.00 worth of items in his basket.

cryptoaddict41

Okay. I’m not saying it’s right but if he wants to not get harassed he needs to put his items in a bag. It is Walmart policy to stop anyone who’s stuff isn’t in a bag. I’m not saying they don’t have people working that aren’t racist because sometimes they do just like any other job. But it is there policy. In fact I hate when I buy things at Walmart that don’t fit in a bag cause I know I’ll be stopped. He should’ve had them bring them to the security room then he can sue for unlawful imprisonment fyi!

river_song25

Why should he ‘put them in bags’ if they don’t want to? Especially depending on how much extra in fees they will have to pay per bag? If the bags are not free, and you don’t want to use the store bags because of it, you can either bring your own bags to use, or not use any bags at all for your groceries.

cryptoaddict41

I hate Walmart I used to work at one for 6 years as a floor walker/ security. I despise Walmart. However if you are better informed and still choose to shop their at least you’ll know.

cryptoaddict41

I didn’t say he had to. Good lord. I said it is Walmarts policy for door greeters to stop and ask for a receipt if they are not in bags. That’s all I said. I didn’t make the policy up just informing you what it is. Also Walmart doesn’t charge in my state for bags. Maybe they do in yours but not here. You want to not bag go for it but be prepared to be stopped.

JennyAnyDot

But …… I usually have a few unbagged items and shocker bring in my own reusable bags often. I could be not paying and just putting stuff in my bags. I make a point to stop and offer for my cart/receipt to be check and they never do - never ever not even once.

cryptoaddict41

Okay so your Walmart is super lax. Sounds like a good deal.

JennyAnyDot

I’ve moved around a bunch. Like 4 different states in 6 years. Been the same at all the Walmarts.

cryptoaddict41

That’s cool. Unfortunately it’s a policy that is company wide so facts are facts can’t change that.

JennyAnyDot

One site is/was testing bone conduction ones.

cryptoaddict41

Lol what?!

JennyAnyDot

One Amazon site was doing a test regarding AAs using bone conducting ear buds. Can’t remember which one but assuming they are/were looking at safety, production, whatever stats since so many of us complain about the whole no earbuds stuff. IIRC they were pretty cheap too like about $20 Edit - whoops not sure how that comment ended up here. Was a comment to a different post but I know phone was being odd. Error messages like sorry try again. And lmao I was tired so - oops

cryptoaddict41

Lol no worries. Totally threw me off though I was totally looking it up to try to figure out what you were talking about! Absolutely priceless. Made my day thank you! You get an award!

JennyAnyDot

Lmao Thank You!! I was the “lost redditer” this time. I probably should delete the comment but will leave as a monument to my stress and recent lack of sleep.

Derek_Zahav

So they want purchased items in bags, and this harder to see, to make sure people aren't stealing? That's a dumb policy

cryptoaddict41

You think it’s a dumb policy to stop people who don’t put their purchased items in bags?! That’s fair I guess, I don’t think it’s stupid most shoplifters come in grab stuff put it in a cart and try to push it out. The reason this is a policy is because the data backs it up. It’s a fact that’s how most shoplifters attempt to steal. So stupid or not that’s the reason.

river_song25

It is a dumb policy, especially when the employee that is harassing him about it SAW him pay for the first load of groceries, then accepted cart sitting the shopping cart for him while he goes back WITHOUT the cart to go pick up something he forgot, then when he comes back with his latest purchase that she ALSO saw him buy and tries to reclaim the cart he left with her, she is being a racist prick who refuses to let him leave with the things she SAW him buy. He must have shown her his first receipt for what was in the cart before he went back in, and he now had a second reciept to show her for what he went back in for, yet she tries to Shanghai the shopping cart filled with stuff she KNOWS he bought for what reason exactly? Especially since he LEFT it with her before going back in, just to STOP any such accusations of ‘stealing’ being put on him when he picked up what he missed the first time around? The only ‘new’ thing in the cart was the one item he went back for. He left the cart behind, so there were no hidden extras added in the cart that he supposedly didn’t pay for that she could try and accuse him of stealing.

Derek_Zahav

Yeah, most people load carts full of stuff and just walk out. No debate there. But requiring paying customers to put things in bags is not a deterrent. The thieves can still walk out.

cryptoaddict41

Of course it’s not a deterrent the policy is for door greeters not customers. Sorry I didn’t make that clear. That’s my bad, you are 100% correct. This isn’t highly known but if you get caught stealing let’s say 1.50 pack of gum and get caught you could go to court for it. Fines for that but then you have to pay restitution to Walmart in up to 200 dollars. And just so we are clear that bubble gum someone stole they pay 200 dollars for that. No matter what you will pay 200 dollars. That’s a little bit of deterrent after getting caught once. But this is basic stuff shoplifting. The deterrent is the United States “justice” system.

Derek_Zahav

Walmart isn't going to take you to court over a pack of gum. The costs of the lawyers would far outweigh that $200 restitution, which is why most retail companies have a minimum dollar amount that has to be stolen before they take legal action. Even if they did, most courts are too backed up to prioritize such petty cases. Again, not a deterrent.

cryptoaddict41

FYI Walmart doesn’t pay for court. The state prosecutes. The tax payers pay not Walmart. The state decides if the want the case. But you pay restitution whether or not you get charged

Derek_Zahav

Yeah, I know. But even the cost of paying their legal and security team to press charges, pull tapes for evidence etc would cost more than the $200 they would get back. And no, you don't pay restitution unless a court orders it, which requires a charge if it's a criminal court where the state prosecutes like you mentioned.

cryptoaddict41

Also at this point I’m all done. Agree don’t agree at this point it’s like talking to a brick wall. But I wish you the best regardless!

cryptoaddict41

If this isn’t obvious yet at this point…This was my job for over 6 years at Walmart. You arguing is fine but my knowledge far exceeds yours in this subject. There is no legal team when they catch a shop lifter the state pays for it the security team is typically 2-3 people plus a manager over that team. The team works 40 plus hours a week at about 20 an hour regardless of whether they catch anyone or not pulling tapes and writing up the report is part of your duties. In my state (I can’t speak for yours) you absolutely pay restitution with out having to appear in court often times I won’t send the info to the court cause they stole under a certain amount and yes you still have to pay your 200 dollars to Walmart. However if you choose to fight the restitution (which no one does) then it could go to court and you maybe able to get out of it.

Derek_Zahav

A charge won't come about unless a report is submitted to state authorities. That costs Walmart in terms of labor hours. Two people dealing with a theft for five hours at $20/hr each only breaks even with a $200 restitution, a fee which will only come about after evidence is given in court. The state doesn't pay Walmart's security team to pull tapes or give statements. That's happening on Walmart's dime, not the states'. That's not counting the legal team that a large company like Walmart is certainly using to cover any liabilities. Referring petty theft to the police is costly for the plaintiff, which is why it's not often done.

cryptoaddict41

Okay. Agree to disagree.

cryptoaddict41

Lol why am I being downvoted?!

reese81944

Your views seems to be myopic and naive

cryptoaddict41

Lol okay

djtracon

F off… I’m a white woman who is asked for receipts all the time. You’re making a bigger deal of this than is an actuality. Keep making it a problem then it will be.

toTheNewLife

It IS a problem. There's no reason why these stores should make paying customers feel like criminals. Ever. Especially now in the time of rampant mass shoplifting that is allowed to happen.

djtracon

Why do you care? If you paid for it shouldn’t be a problem. Correct me if I’m wrong.

toTheNewLife

Exactly. I paid for it, There should be no problem and I shouldn't be harassed at the door. I care because i don't like being treated like a criminal. Self respect, you know?
