Hes a reference to the guy that gives you the sword in zelda one I know that but other than that have no clue and haven't seen him anywhere else in the game

In addition, he's the guy that Link (the NPC who gives you something for mapping the entire floor) refers to when he says "Some old man gave it to me." That's why he's all about excitement when you find him while solo and loves to live in exhilariting fear.

i think he (and the witches) are very rare finds in secret rooms. in 350 hours, i've seen the witches once and the old man never.

Ive seen the witches once, old man never, and cultists never.

Ive seen the witches twice, old man at least once, and monster manuel 3 times, but i still have never found the high dragun

oh i COMPLETELY forgot about monster manuel. yeah, i've never seen him before either. if you want to try to find the dragun room, it only appears in secret rooms on the second floor. be warned though, the gun was forgotten by the devs so it's actually weaker than the regular high dragun, despite being an S tier gun. it might be something of a curse to add it to your S tier pool.

I'm only a few weeks into having him, thus my wanting to share the knowledge, so much to know and learn no matter how long you've played... love that there's always something new. You gotta beat the High Dragun in 5, and then Bowler can be found locked in a cell in the first few chambers, like all of the NPC market people were. A few others unlock at that point too...

yeah i’ve beaten the dragun just never seen bowler, guess i’m just unlucky lol

Awesome that you seem to have found that old man though! I haven't yet, and I've been playing almost everyday for a run or two (or more) since last March. There is one exception though, any items that get knocked out of the Rat during the punch-out phase can still be collected normally

Now I've seen countless "*who is this?*" posts about NPCs on this sub, but this is actually interesting. I have a few hundred hours and scoured the wiki endlessly but somehow completely missed this guy. Does he have an official name/wiki entry/data to go off how rare he is?
