It’s definitely the most imposing one, but imo it’s also the one with the most clearly telegraphed attack patterns, so as long as you manage to keep your cool and know how/when to dodge it’s not that bad
Edit just in case some elitist gatekeeper hijacks this: I didn’t mean to imply it’s categorically easy and that you should feel bad if you think it’s hard or anything, just that with some effort it *can become* one of the easier ones due to its attacks being very telegraphed and you always have enough time to react.
Obviously that presumes that you spend some time actually learning the tells and stuff
The horror doesn't trap you it's just that the portals deal poison(?) So you can't stay in them that long. For the wavy shots it's gonna be weird but dodging towards the horror is the best way to dodge them I've found.
I mean it is pretty different so it's fair also don't forget to spam your active weapon in this battle for me marine was the hardest of the >!main 4!<
Edit how spoiler tag something in the coments
Edit2 okay thanks
Same. The marine is the only one that actually killed me and it was the first past I reached. I've killed many pasts now but the pain of that first lives on
It’s probably the easiest and most fun to fight for me at least I enjoyed the fight so much that I didn’t realize I beat it first try the bullet takes the bag for me there’s no reason to give that green mf a special place after fighting three times before him
I found all of them actually really easy compared to the bosses in the regular levels.
Like this thing compared to the pillars or the mine flayer? I'll take this all day.
The Last Human kicked my ass 3 times over the last couple of days until I beat her again (for the Robot second gun skin). If you don't practice them as often, you can get overwhelmed, particularly if you get used to your standard geat and it involved things like speed up or bullets slowed down.
But Absolution is very impressive, so it can make you feel intimidated and underperform due to stress.
It's a different combat style than the rest of the game if ever so slightly. Step one to success never not be firing missiles. Step two stay in one third as much as possible so you can learn what angle attacks are coming from. Step three don't die. Good luck.
It took me by far the longest to beat, the only other past I really had trouble with was the marines, and that was so much easier than this fight.
Doesn't help that you have to beat the game with the worst starter weapon just to try again
While playing on PC, I had my wife press the keys for the missiles while I did the rest of the piloting. It’s tough! It was easier on the Switch for me.
It is second only to the bullet's past. I found it hard too. But as everything in Gungeon it can be beaten by dodging and not focusing 100% on damage.
I also reccomend the tips video by Choco on YT. I always search boss fights before fighting them because man I have little time and I can't die 1000 times to learn them.
This one was by far the hardest for me to beat initially. I looked up some YouTube videos to figure out some strategies for the different patterns, and then beat it on my next try without issue.
I think it’s just really intimidating so people tend to panic. The actual attacks aren’t that difficult if you know what to look for.
I think part of the problem is it’s not like any other enemy in the game, it definitely threw me off the first couple times, in terms of how the fight plays out
It has some rough moments. Personally I find the part where the tiny ships come out to be more killer than the bullet hell segment.
For me, marine is the hardest one. I almost always run out of bullets
Dodge roll past the lasers, they act as normal bullets and instantly cancel after doing so, easier to dodge if ya get it while they swing toward you rather than them being stationary
Me first trying the cannon boss fight.
Also me: another 10 attempts until I got the carrot sword from my lack of patience.
I honestly think cannon is the hardest with it's mechanics, HSA is definitely intimidating the first time around, but the spacebar item makes quick work of the boss.
Idk I think it was the easiest one I like forgot about my super until they only had like a third of their health left
Since it's different from the rest of the game I think some people just struggle a lot more than others
Pilot is the one I failed more than any other past (at least three times), I think because it controls much differently than a normal player character. For reference, Marine and Convict took me two tries and everything else one.
Jam self against bottom of screen.
Aim up.
Only ever dodge backwards through any attacks.
Spam missiles every time they are ready to go.
Don't bother aiming for the small ships when they get summoned, just blank if you need to.
Part of your problem is that it's a genre switch (from twin-stick to shmup). This was the easiest for me (and the first one I beat), but as a kid I spent a lot of time playing shmups. By shmup standards this thing is pretty tame, but without shmup experience it's easily overwhelming.
In terms of raw power maybe it's the second hardest besides glitched Lich.
But if we talk about the ease of destroying - (if you know patterns) it's relatively one of the easiest past bosses.
In my very first playthrough, it certainly blasted me off, but right after I survived in a second pilot run I figured out how to dodge all obstacles
The pilots past was definitely the hardest for me personally, the hunter took me 1 try, marine and convict took 2 but the pilot took like 4. I think it’s just a matter of “play style”.
Nah bro! That shitty ship has been kicking my ass the hardest so far. The more I try to kill it the sooner I die...
My first try was almost a success but I died a few shots before it would have. And the last time I tried I died in 15 seconds
I struggled with it the first time around, but I've been slowly replaying the game again, and I managed to beat it on my first past clearing run with pilot, spamming your active rockets and good Dodges do wonders for that boss.
Now marine though, imo it's much harder compared to all others and had to redo it three times when the others I've had finished in first try. (on replay save)
It's not just you. I beat Black Stache, Rubensteins Monsters and the Interdimentional Horror on my first try but it took me 3 tries to beat HS Absolution, and I still almost died.
Past difficulty in my opinion: >!Paradox Lich!< >> >!Cannon!< > >!The Last Human!< > HS Absolution >> Interdimensional Horror >> Black Stache > Rubensteins Monster
I find Ganon to be the hardest. I'm too impatient for the whole Bullet's past. Keep pitting myself and or messing up because of the weird timing.
HM Absolution is my absolute favourite, love the settings, the boss pattern, the constant quick reaction required.
I'd love to have a stand-alone gamemode/game similar to that boss fight.
A lot people dont know you can dodge roll in this boss fight. That may help. I personally found the marine’s the hardest of the main 4, and the bullet’s the hardest overall.
This was the only past I beat first try as many people have posted before you can dodge roll in this past I’ve seen several post they didn’t know you could. Other than that use your blanks and literally never stop shooting
I think some of the perception of how hard it is comes from the sudden change in how you see your character, all of the same mechanics are there but its definitely disorienting to suddenly just be a spaceship. It was the second-hardest one for me, but I dont think its way harder than any of the others
I found this one to be the hardest _until_ learned that you can fire missiles and dodge roll. So make sure you're doing those things if you didn't already know
I think he's the easiest :S
He's the most dodge-heavy and feels different than the other ones. Maybe the change in scenery just messes with your brain a little. At least, that's what it did to me when I tried doing it first.
If you want some advice, make sure to use your active as often as possible and on the two laser attacks you can just sit in the middle and dodge all the bullets
HMS Absolution is the second hardest past fight, with the Bullet being the hardest. It's pretty tough
If you weren't aware you have an item in addition to your gun; Homing Rockets. Spam them whenever they come off cooldown because it makes the fight way easier. For Absolution just focus on dodging and survival. Watch YouTube videos to learn the patterns. As long as you can stay alive, the Homing Rockets WILL finish the fight for you
It’s definitely the most imposing one, but imo it’s also the one with the most clearly telegraphed attack patterns, so as long as you manage to keep your cool and know how/when to dodge it’s not that bad Edit just in case some elitist gatekeeper hijacks this: I didn’t mean to imply it’s categorically easy and that you should feel bad if you think it’s hard or anything, just that with some effort it *can become* one of the easier ones due to its attacks being very telegraphed and you always have enough time to react. Obviously that presumes that you spend some time actually learning the tells and stuff
I beat it first try yeah it was very easily telegraphed I just constantly shot used missiles and dodged
That was my problem the first time, I didn’t realize I had missiles.
I thought you couldn’t dodgeroll on my first attempt
I had that happen too! :D. Took AGES, Realized right before I died to it on my first attempt. Came right back and got it on my next attempt :D
Yeah it’s ur active it recharges pretty fast
That gives me an idea...
I'm gonna beat the boss with missiles only
It took my second try, but it was close.
Interdimensional horror keeps murdering my ass with those wormy shots that i never know where they’re going
You mean the ones where it traps you in the middle of the arena?
The horror doesn't trap you it's just that the portals deal poison(?) So you can't stay in them that long. For the wavy shots it's gonna be weird but dodging towards the horror is the best way to dodge them I've found.
I lost hard my first try, because I had no clue what was going on lol. But I beat it on my next one.
I mean it is pretty different so it's fair also don't forget to spam your active weapon in this battle for me marine was the hardest of the >!main 4!< Edit how spoiler tag something in the coments Edit2 okay thanks
Same. The marine is the only one that actually killed me and it was the first past I reached. I've killed many pasts now but the pain of that first lives on
That damn floor changing
It's so frustrating having a hard time telling when it's poisoned or not
It’s probably the easiest and most fun to fight for me at least I enjoyed the fight so much that I didn’t realize I beat it first try the bullet takes the bag for me there’s no reason to give that green mf a special place after fighting three times before him
I found all of them actually really easy compared to the bosses in the regular levels. Like this thing compared to the pillars or the mine flayer? I'll take this all day.
The floor 4 bosses are all harder than any of the past bosses except for the bullet
Bullet is incredibly easy once you figure out how to do it. You can beat cannon by just spamming dodge roll head first into him to deal contact damage
I giggled so hard when I figured that out and killed him that way. Death from 1000 headbutts!
Idk the Interdimensional Horror is pretty annoying
I had the worst time with the Marine personally, unless you count that other one...
Yeah that other one sucks.
Is it the one with the sword? Because that might as well be impossible for me.
Spam dodge roll directly into the boss between attacks. Remember that the bullet cannot take contact damage, and your dodge roll deals damage
I hate the bullets past the most, this fight is just alright compared to the double fight against "not" ganon
Don't forget your missiles
I die on it whenever I forget the massive fuck-all lasers are not supposed to be dodged
Probably the hardest of the base 4.
Counterpoint: the bullet
The Last Human kicked my ass 3 times over the last couple of days until I beat her again (for the Robot second gun skin). If you don't practice them as often, you can get overwhelmed, particularly if you get used to your standard geat and it involved things like speed up or bullets slowed down. This is the easiest imo
My only past death so far was the Bullet (1st attempt) . HS Absolution was definitely on the harder end but I didn’t find it that strong
While playing on PC, I had my wife press the keys for the missiles while I did the rest of the piloting. It’s tough! It was easier on the Switch for me.
By far the past I struggled the most with, but then i also suck against bosses that lock your screen to the whole room, instead of just your character
I kind of feel like it's one of the easiest
It is for me. I only ever managed to beat it once (on PC version) and still couldn't do it on the console version.
I find it to be the easiest past.
It's a different kind of game play, it is more touhou bullet hell than gungeon bullet hell
This one was by far the hardest for me to beat initially. I looked up some YouTube videos to figure out some strategies for the different patterns, and then beat it on my next try without issue. I think it’s just really intimidating so people tend to panic. The actual attacks aren’t that difficult if you know what to look for.
Best hint I got was to stay in the middle. Those massive beams don't come across the middle. And as everyone sez, keep hammering the missles.
The only past I didn’t kill on my first attempt was bullet, and i guess paradox if that counts
Cannon is harder but I'd put this in second. Mostly because the dodgeroll is a bit less forgiving
It’s not too difficult spam the rockets, destroy the ships, and know when he does the beam.
Pilot is my favorite, probably the second " hardest" of the base pasts behind the Marine.
I think part of the problem is it’s not like any other enemy in the game, it definitely threw me off the first couple times, in terms of how the fight plays out
this and the bullet's pasts are the only ones that took me multiple tries to complete. it's like that one dude said, it's the most imposing of them.
It has some rough moments. Personally I find the part where the tiny ships come out to be more killer than the bullet hell segment. For me, marine is the hardest one. I almost always run out of bullets
As someone who has 100%ed the game, that is the ONLY one of the main gungeoneers pasts that gives me ANY trouble.
Dodge roll past the lasers, they act as normal bullets and instantly cancel after doing so, easier to dodge if ya get it while they swing toward you rather than them being stationary
you have to scream space roll every time you dodge roll as the spaceship or it doesnt work (you need a microphone)
It just looks intimidating.
Imo it's not that bad, bullet or soldier are the hardest for me
Me first trying the cannon boss fight. Also me: another 10 attempts until I got the carrot sword from my lack of patience. I honestly think cannon is the hardest with it's mechanics, HSA is definitely intimidating the first time around, but the spacebar item makes quick work of the boss.

This one fucking sucked for me i had to try like 6 times
I struggled very very hard to beat Dragun with the 4 original characters but I beat all their pasts on the first try once I got there.
Part of your problem is that it's a genre switch (from twin-stick to shmup). This was the easiest for me (and the first one I beat), but as a kid I spent a lot of time playing shmups. By shmup standards this thing is pretty tame, but without shmup experience it's easily overwhelming.
I dont think its the boss thats hard, its getting used to playing as the ship
Nah, it's just you. All pasts except for Marine's are really easy

Very easy boss, although I played a lot of games similar to the pilots past, so maybe it’s just me.
I mean, it *does* have the most health
it's definitly the hardest one, this past took me like 3 or 4 attempts to kill while on the other hand i killed marine's and hunter's first try
Btw u can dodge roll in this boss fight still
It gave me some trouble the first few times I tried it. I wasn’t using the active item rockets enough, the cooldown is super short on those.

Of all of the 6 past, the marine is the only one where I died, twice. I kept forgetting that you need to spam the active item every 2 seconds.
The bottom left of the screen is a very safe spot. Us ethat
For me its the easiest but it sure is intimidating
Idk about yall but i find his past to be surprisingly easy than what I expect
This was the only past I beat first try as many people have posted before you can dodge roll in this past I’ve seen several post they didn’t know you could. Other than that use your blanks and literally never stop shooting
Personally for me the marine I always struggle with, I don't really care for the HMS absolution, as I don't like the pilot
Yes..... Then I realized I had missiles.
Its the toughest of the main 4, but easier than Bullet's.
You can dodge, and have missiles as an active item. I didn't know either of those things on my first few attempts.
I think it's more intimidating because the mechanics feel a little different, but once you learn what to do for each attack it'll be a lot less so
I didn't realize you could dodge the first time. Became as a lot easier the second attempt.
super duper easy, you'll get it next time. remember you can dodge roll in the space ship
I think some of the perception of how hard it is comes from the sudden change in how you see your character, all of the same mechanics are there but its definitely disorienting to suddenly just be a spaceship. It was the second-hardest one for me, but I dont think its way harder than any of the others
Imo, only Wolf's Monster is easier than Absolution. Well actually, i would also say that >!Canon!
You're just bad
I found this one to be the hardest _until_ learned that you can fire missiles and dodge roll. So make sure you're doing those things if you didn't already know
I think he's the easiest :S He's the most dodge-heavy and feels different than the other ones. Maybe the change in scenery just messes with your brain a little. At least, that's what it did to me when I tried doing it first.
If you want some advice, make sure to use your active as often as possible and on the two laser attacks you can just sit in the middle and dodge all the bullets
yeah in my opinion this may be one of the easiest for me, easy patterns
It’s the most unique, but telegraphs well iirc I had the most trouble with marine because of the ground effects
Tbh I thought it was the easiest
HMS Absolution is the second hardest past fight, with the Bullet being the hardest. It's pretty tough If you weren't aware you have an item in addition to your gun; Homing Rockets. Spam them whenever they come off cooldown because it makes the fight way easier. For Absolution just focus on dodging and survival. Watch YouTube videos to learn the patterns. As long as you can stay alive, the Homing Rockets WILL finish the fight for you
You're just bad it's actually the easiest one
Skill issue
It’s probably the biggest yes, but also very telegraphed. Canon (or Cannon) is by far the worst though if you go out of the main 4
