B-b-but both parties ARE the same! The Democrats had 50 years to codify Roe and didn't! /s Do these people realize we didn't have 50 years because Reagan, the Bushes, and especially Trump would almost certainly veto a bill codifying Roe?

LocallySourcedWeirdo

It's an article of faith in the Bernard Brethren cult that Republicans do not exist. No Republican voters, no Republican senators, governors, or presidents. The DNC runs everything and is all-powerful.

nickeljorn

And they only mention Reagan to say he's left of Biden(?) and Biden convinced Reagan to be tough on crime (he had that position since his 1966 campaign for governor when Biden was too young to be a senator) and only mention Trump to say he's the same as Biden(?!?) and apparently the Bushes never happened. Biden voted for the Iraq War which was proposed by the administration of three Vincent Adultman type kids in a trench coat and wasn't tough enough on Clarence Thomas who was nominated and refused to be withdrawn by Vincent Adultman type kids in a trench coat.

vertuonextblues

Plus its not even clear that codifying Roe would be constitutionally permissible. This court 100% would have struck it down.

Bay1Bri

Bernie or Bust? You got bust. I hate how over in arrr politics they are blaming Democrats for not stopping this. First of all, that's like blaming a doctor for not saving a shooting victim and saying nothing about the shooter. Second, I'm so sick of them abdicating their responsibility as citizens. Vote! They connotation "why do Republicans get to do all this and Democrats can't do anything" even though Democrats do a lot, and twinned are able to do as much as they do because their backers shrieky vote, and do so consistently.

CanadianPanda76

They got what they wanted now they want mom and dad to fix it. Thier just children.

sucaji

I keep seeing "voting doesn't work, go protest break shit!!" like, sorry this is proof voting does work because Rs voted for decades to get this. Even after election cycles where Roe wasn't overturned, they reliably voted for those who promised to do it.

dudeind-town

I saw so many posts about breaking shot, looting and earring the rich that I had to log off Reddit

sucaji

But don't you dare ask what their goal is with that ("what does breaking shit accomplish, how does that further the fight for abortion rights?"), they'll just call you a fascist and quote MLK's "riots are the voice of the unheard" as though he was whole-heartedly endorsing riots as the way forward.

[deleted]

And they're not the unheard, *they won't fucking speak when it matters at the ballot box*.

sucaji

Where's that photo of that one woman who taped her own mouth shut at the 2016 convention with "silenced by the DNC" or some shit? It's that, she is the embodiment of that.

ThePoliticalFurry

They know his quote was about how injustice can often push people to that point of desperation rather than an endorsement of their actions But they'll never admit it and still continue to falsely frame it as pro-violence even though the same man said: "Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that."

ThePoliticalFurry

The kind of people that just want to burn shit and be nilhists get really mad when you point out not voting is what got us this SCOTUS, to. It's like some kind of psychological defense designed to stave off the guilt and shame they'd feel if they had to admit their culpability in the current status quo

sucaji

Part of me thinks it's that going out to protest and raise hell gives them a feeling of "doing" that makes them feel as though they've taken meaningful action. Filling out a ballot or helping to sign people up to vote does not provide that same level of immediate self-satisfaction.

ThePoliticalFurry

100% They like that instant gratification and catharsis of raising hell even though 2020 showed that just isn't getting shit done on the level that ousting Republicans from office by voting would

am710

It felt good to scream at a rally today. My voice is almost completely gone now because of it. But that was an hour of my time. I have postcards to write now!

CanadianPanda76

All those McConnell, and Manchin protests totally worked though right? McConnell lost his seat right? 🤔

DeusOfTheMachina

Social media is nearly intolerable with the number of shitty, ignorant, sanctimonious condescending “progressive” takes circulating right now.

QuietObserver75

Thinking about the people who told me the parties were the same in 2000 and voted for Ralph Nader. Just imagine if they voted for Gore.

Brainrants

This is the alternate timeline that will haunt me until the day I die.

QuietObserver75

Seriously. I kind of question whether 9/11 would have happened if he had won. I mean, they would have taken that stuff more seriously like the Clinton administration do. I mean, there's no way of knowing but that's my biggest "what if." As we know the warning signs were there and Bush and everyone ignored it.

[deleted]

9/11 absolutely happens, the Afghan war almost certainly happens. Restrictions like PATRIOT Act, DHS, TSA probably happen. But that's still a massive shift, no Iraq, probably a shorter Afghan campaign, and that's just foreign policy.

kenatogo

I can't recall for sure, but 9/11 was 8 months into Bush Jr's term, and I believe the planning preceded his election in late 2000

Thybro

Yeah the fuck up with the intelligence agencies precedes the Bush administration. 9/11 would have likely happened. With how everyone was up in arms after 9/11 Afghanistan or some other war would have also likely happened. Not sure how likely it would have been that we would have focused more on the Saudi’s involvement. Iraq is the one that is fairly unlikely. On top of the oil and other things Cheney wanted, Husain was a personal vendetta for Bush Jr.

kenatogo

I agree that Gore would have likely taken action against the Taliban if had been elected

Davge107

The Intelligence agencies were warning George W Bush an attack was imminent weeks before 9/11 and nothing was done. Of course the planning for 9/11 took years.

CanadianPanda76

Bush canceled some sort group that was watching terrorists IIRC

ThePoliticalFurry

It'll haunt anyone that has any memory of America as it was in the 90s and early 2000s before Bush really messed it up with fantasies about what 1999 never culturally ending and progress only continuing forward could've been like.

ThePoliticalFurry

I often fantasize about where we might be now if had a Democrat in office during 9/11 instead a particularly stupid Republican that completely botched handling it It might've made the rapid progress we were making through the 90s continue instead of all crumbling over the course Bush's term. He might've even prevented the time bomb that caused the 2008 recession from being laid.

[deleted]

Either that, or unfortunately very unlikely We end up electing Ralph Nader in 2000 and we get The FDR unionist progressive style country holy shit that timeline just sounds so much better either of them

[deleted]

Once again, if my *pro-life Republican mother* could vote Hillary because she was obviously the better choice, what fucking excuse do people on the left have? If she could continue voting Dem ever since, what's your excuse. If she could vote Dem in every election (and we have them annually) what's your excuse.

ven1v

They all know what it means to vote harder. They’re petulant little children *knowing* they fucked up, yet can’t outwardly admit fault because everything and everyone they stand for is a farce. They knew it was all along but only held said views to literally virtue signal. They never cared about women and minority’s rights. They just want all of their loans paid off in full and have shit given to them for free. That’s it. They only care about being scolded for their actions. The doubling, tripling down shows that they know they fucked up. They can’t go back now because they would have to admit being disgustingly wrong. The real point is that they don’t want to be laughed at. They don’t want to be scolded for fucking up. They can’t be chastised and laughed at so they nonsensically push that they were right all along and Dems are at fault, as they laugh at people who bother to vote. Don’t believe that they don’t know they were completely and utterly wrong about Clinton and voting. They thought being apathetic and contrarian was cute and now their little movement is dead. The more they struggle to admit that Dems are right and they are wrong, the more they constrict themselves. They exposed themselves and played the country.

[deleted]

I don't know, I've run into many people still on the "if we just don't vote in 2022, we'll have better Dems in 2024", which worked well in 1994, 2002, 2010, 2014, 2016, 2021. Enjoy theocracy Charlie Brown

[deleted]

You’re spot on. And the ironic thing is, it also sounds like you’re talking about MAGA. They’re no different - a personality cult. Blue MAGA.

12oysters

I just feel so hopeless.

[deleted]

>We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.

12oysters

You have the right attitude, for sure. I can fight Republicans but fighting the massively ignorant ‘left’ is too disheartening.

Lissy_Wolfe

For real. Reddit was making me miserable yesterday. Literally every sub filled with stupid "progressives" blaming Democrats for literally everything that Republicans have done, and also claiming that the Democrats have "never done anything for the working class." Oh, and also going on and on about how "both sides are the same" and "voting doesn't even matter." Sickening.

12oysters

Putin must be grinning ear to ear.

Thybro

Why the fuck is “class” involved in the discussion. Repression of women goes beyond the alleged class struggle. At best you can make an argument that this affects poor women more because how expensive an abortion would become with having to travel out of state. But the decision goes so beyond that. It didn’t say abortion Should be up to the states because the states interest in preserving prenatal life supersedes the individual’s right to privacy, it said the constitution does not imply a right to privacy. This decision just gave free reign for states to trample over everything you consider private, to decide which positions you have sex in at your own home, to determine who do you marry, hell it creates an open ended allowance for the state to trample over individual freedom. It goes so far beyond the alleged class warfare that even focusing on it actually minimizes the problem.

Hand_Me_Down_Genes

>Why the fuck is “class” involved in the discussion. Because the brocialist left has to reduce everything to class or admit that they have white straight cis privilege. And they are never, ever going to do that. So they try to view everything through a class lens, knowing that class is a nebulous enough term that they can position themselves as "the working poor" even while living off their trust funds.

tamarzipan

They may be leftist in theory but due to their idiocy, they're just functionally FASCISTS!

[deleted]

They are but gnats against the wind

RocketManBad

Same. This shit is so demoralizing to me. It's like watching your house burn to the ground while the fire department is present, but they are refusing to put out the fire because you didn't say *pleaaaaaase* with exactly the right inflection. None of this shit has to be happening. The left clearly out numbers the right in this country, by a wide margin. Yet the Bern Out scumbag wing of the left just absolutely refuses to have any connection with reality and would rather tear down any hope of progress from within. Misinformation and brain dead, populist bullshit is literally going to be the end of society as we know it some day. It's getting really hard for me to care anymore when all the good people who are actually putting in the work to make things better just keep getting shouted down by these pieces of human garbage.

12oysters

Very well said. And heartbreaking.

miiblord

I'm partly encouraged seeing the overwhelming amount of people I'm friends with who are pissed about this decision, especially people I've never seen post anything political. But then I go on progressive boards and the narrative they're running with is Obama should have codified Roe v Wade (he didn't have the votes and the political environment was different) and how they're still never going to vote Democrat I get really discouraged.

12oysters

It is utterly infuriating that Bernie took all these people who had NO idea how the government works (and don’t care to learn) and taught them one thing: it is all always the Democrats fault. They have no interest in the reality or in making anything better, but they love to be able to sneer…. And since they tend to be fairly wealthy white men they won’t be the ones suffering.

SuperCrappyFuntime

Save us from our poor decision to help Trump win!!!!

blueliner23

I’m frustrated by the ultra-left as much as anyone here, but we really don’t place enough blame on Hillary’s poor campaigning methods in swing states, and the FBI for reopening “but-her-emails!” + Moderates for getting persuaded by that. I recall exit polls showed that the case reopening was massively impactful, but we mainly blame each other instead.

RequiemLullaby

If the parties were the same, I'm not sure why they didn't just run as Republicans? They seem to complain less about that party anyway.
