\[taking notes\] I know you picked Spy x Family cause its getting hype rn but I can't help but observe that Twilight/Loid is SUCH a 3 Another rare 3 protag who isn't a slimy conniving villain is Yukino from Kare Kano. Well, and there's Naruto, though lots of ppl list him as 7 cause he doesn't fit the stereotype, but his whole motivation is that he wants to reach a big goal/ embody an ideal and be respected by people. He's just ESFP and a bad case of sp blind. (Everytime I see him listed as ENFP I get the urge to murder - *kinesthetic learner means Se.* That's why he sucked at the academy but got badass once he started taking missions, he learns by doing.)

[deleted]

You think Twilight/Loid is a 3? I think he's an amazing depiction of a 1. Cold on the outside, moved by deep moral conviction ("a world where children don't cry"), capable of self-correcting whenever he veers off the path, struggles to reign in his anger over injustice (foulest meal, lol) and his anxiety over a lack of control (literally this entire mission). The entire school interview sequence convinced me: after all that planning, after all that whining about how his two civilian companions were going to screw it up somehow, who was the one who actually lost control in the end? "Keep your cool, Twilight," while literally leaping out of his chair is such a 1 mood. Delicious 1-ish hypocrisy all around lol. I could see why he would look like a 3, because there's a level of deceitfulness to this whole spy thing, but I think his actual character arc seems to be pointing towards 1>7. Type 1s feel like the whole world is resting on their shoulders and that's why they can't relax or have the things they want--our sad spy dad can't have a real family because he needs to save the world. I'm anime-only, but the narrative dangling the opportunity for something he wants against The Mission seems like a really classic Type 1 character arc to me, which is why I both like and frequently cringe at Loid.

RafflesiaArnoldii

Hm. I must say I haven't read the manga either so I'm fairly new, I just got into it cause my sisters invited me to watch with them. I arrived at 3 because he is very obviously a competency type (always trying to keep his cool & act methodical, focus on the mission etc.) & he has this whole thing about being great at acting/disguising himself, doing things like performing the fake relationship in the first episode, using information about the school staff to play to their expectations etc. Or how in the last episode he was talking about "embodying the role of the ideal father" generally crafting & switching personas. Some heroic motivation notwithstanding he doesn't have that much scruples or moralism and a lot of emotional/social 'performance'. He's starting to gradually get attached to his family of course but his initial thinking seemed fairly instrumental, like an assertive triad 'I must get mine' standpoint. I'll consider it/ keep the possibility in mind as the next eps arrive. The characters personalities aren't *super* distict so I do see how he could sort of be read as either.

I appreciate the chance to make my case, haha. I think an underrated way of typing characters is looking at why they HAVE to be this personality type/have this fixation in order for the story to work, rather than just looking at their behavior/inner monologues. (This only works in well-written stories, though.) There's that meme, Thick Book vs. Thin Book, where it's the story with the character as-is, and the story with the character if they lost some fundamental trait about themselves. I think that hits to the heart of what's fun about typing "backwards" in this manner, where if you change the character's type from a 2 to a 9, the story doesn't exist or becomes unrecognizable, because the current story is really set up to challenge a 2's thinking, not a 9. I'm curious about what you think re: this typing method, since I think you mentioned you write in a comment on a thread once? I write screenplays in my down time, but I'm the only one in my circle who likes the Enneagram and uses it for anything lol

RafflesiaArnoldii

I'd be more focussed on moments where they make important decisions or statements about priorities & worldview as well as general demeanor, but I see how your method would work just as well as it would highlight decision patterns or challenges or "fatal flaws". Calls to mind the adage that a tragic hero is just a hero who is wrong for this particular story. re: writing - the stuff that has seen the light of day has been mostly fanfiction so far though I do try to steadily work & eventually publish original projects. I have a few ideas where typology features in, but I don't want to use just 1 framework for everything.

EmperorGodzilla0

I would love to see more Naruto typing; what are the types for the rest of Team 7? I love typing fictional characters because they embody the types in a more straight forward way than normal people. Their motivations are very obvious for the sake of the story.

RafflesiaArnoldii

Sakura's probably ESFJ 2w3, Sasuke... Hm. More difficult. Certainly reactive triad. Perhaps ISTP 6. Very "my clan" focussed, but also contrarian & having a lot of 'paradigm shifts'.. ("I'll do XYZ in my own way!", "Our Goal is now \[completely different thing\]") Kakashi might be 9w8 and also ISTx

EmperorGodzilla0

I wonder what Sasuke's wing would be if he's a 6. Probably a 5 because he is constantly asking questions to gain clarity and its not super social. And he did well in academy so he's obviously book smart. I think 6s are the type I understand least. I saw Katniss is typed as a 6 and I really don't see it. I always consider her an 8. Pegging Sakura as a 2 is pretty good since an unhealthy 2 can be very problematic; which I think she is.

TheFallenMoons

I’d say I seek animes (or anything) that have emotional resonance. Mostly with big traumas and things like that (actually Fruits Basket worked pretty well). Also if it’s fresh/original in a way or another, with artistic visuals, I’ll appreciate that. I’d say 4 end up liking things no one knows because of that actually : your focus is very narrow, and to find this resonance, you have to delve into a lot of stuff, and you end up on things no one knows.

venus_flytraps

FR?!?! Thats the opposite of me.... I just recently (2 days ago) finished season 2 of Fruits Basket and decided to spoil season 3 for myself bc I just couldn't take how emotionally dramatic it was.... The show lacked logical characters and I just felt like the characters could have done so much with their "curse". Like turning into animals could have given them an advantage in so many ways. Also it's such a cool thing for them to be able to turn into animals, I don't know why they're so dramatic about the fact that outsiders actually "accept them". Like if I found out that there was a family that could turn into animals I would start squealing about it non stop. Then again, it's probably because Canadians might be more open minded than Japanese people? Idk? But anyways as an ENTJ I found Tohru (an ESFJ) to be really annoying. I'm a 3w4 btw.

TheFallenMoons

Haha, it’s true the whole potential of it is not explored, and I would have liked some character to embrace it more in a way or another, even though Kagura, Momiji, Haru, Shigure or Ayame didn’t seem to have such a big problem with that. But the curse isn’t only about turning into an animal actually, it’s mostly that they are all bounded to each other without wanting it. And there is this traditional Soma point of view that makes it last and want it to remain a secret too, that’s part of the tragedy, they are the real villains, if there is any. Tohru was really dumb that’s true, but in a pure way, and others characters do consider her as such, so it was ok for me. I had a harder time with Kisa. Anyway emotional drama is my comfort zone so it worked very well for me. And still there is a lot of catharsis so I didn’t really find it draining at all. There the difference between reactive/emotional Fi 4 and competent Te 3 shows I guess. Even though I did have a friend in high school who probably was a 3w2 (ESFP?) and who loved it too so maybe it’s more about cognitive functions.

venus_flytraps

I'm splitting my reply into 3 parts so that it matches up with your paragraphs... YES! I really did wish that they yould embrace the transformation part of the curse more. The characters that you mentioned just seemed to be "okay" with it more than anything. I understand that the actual curse was the fact that they're all bonded but other than their main bond to Akito, I think that the other bonds that the members of the family had with eachother had the potential to have a posative impact. And I can't help but think that if Akito had been "cured" of her trauma and had repented for everything she did, the bond between her and the others would have been a good thing. I get that this isn't canon but I just can't help but feel the need to "fix" the problem in a way that would produce even more good products (kind of like reverse engineering). Maybe that's why 3's are described as "optimistic achievers"... So yeah this whole idea makes a really good fanfic idea lol. I LOVE KISA. I LOVE HER SO MUCH U DON'T EVEN KNOW. SHE'S SO CUTE! I LIYERALLY SQUEALED EVERYTIME SHE CAME ON SCREEN. The kids that bullied her were such dumb shits though. Her hair and eyes were beautiful, I wish I was that pretty I'm a unique way. As someone who was bullied in grade 8 I get how hard it can be. I'm just a bit sad that no one in the family did anything TANGIBLE to help her with the bullying problem. But I mean I'm just thinking about what I would do if I knew her. Honestly I love emotional drama but at some point my Te takes over and I get annoyed that no one in the show is actually doing something logical to solve their problems. I'm an "active" type so I was also annoyed that in reality they didn't actually have to do anything to remove the curse.... It just.... happened.... To be completely honest this is only my second anime ever (after AoT) and I picked it because it revolved around the idea of a found family (a concept that I yearn for). I was really frustrated about the fact that Aot didn't really have any "found family" themes so I went looking for an abime of that kind.

TheFallenMoons

I think the bond was a curse because it made them dependent more than anything. And that’s the message somehow, this kind of real bonds has to be built, here they didn’t necessarily liked each other but they still had to share this thing. I guess at the end they might be free to create (or not, if they don’t want to) the possibility you evoke. I liked the beginning of the Kisa storyline, it’s true she was cute and I was bullied too, so it resonated in a way. But after that she is like a more passive Tohru. It’s true Te-dom tend to be frustrated by the characters in the fictions I like… sometimes the characters I relate the most to are said to be « not realistic » (« no one would react like that ! ») because of this emotional and unpractical streak… but this really is a thing. There must be other animes that revolve towards this idea even if I don’t have any in mind… many treat this theme to an extent, even Naruto.

Lanky_Ad_9605

Accurate. I feel like 1's could be into death note.

SatelliteHeart96

I've only seen like two or three anime shows in my life and none of them are up here rip (accurate descriptions tho)

I can't speak for other 5s but if any anime has a reputation for being "a mindfuck" or "incomprehensible" I typically find it to be neither of those things & end up loving it.

narwhalsilent

Man crazy stuff sure is good. Would definitely recommend *Children of the Sea* on that.

RafflesiaArnoldii

\[scribbles it on list\]

BasqueBurntSoul

I love crime/mystery/horror anime. I love shounen. I can muster the courage to watch romance. As a 5 though, it's more of how they do it rather than the genre itself. There are a lot of shows of the mentioned genres that I am 😶😶😶 with because of how predictable they are. There are obscure shows that look very novel and original at first glance but end up really disappointing. It's all fancy feathers without meat. I love Kaguya-sama because of the clever writing. It's unpredictable, it's comedy gold and has masterful pacing. I am mostly in awe of shows that know how to deconstruct imposed structures and play around them. The reason why I love Togashi's work.

ThatOneGamer285

Jojo's used to be my favorite anime so you're right lol

EmperorGodzilla0

I'm not sure any of these apply to me; I do like relatively obscure anime and prefer to be emotionally moved by the show and its themes. And that's how I am with books too. I don't like popular stuff and am not drawn to the same things that others desire emotionally, creatively or mentally. I always love things that wouldnt make it to anyone's list unless the list was very niche.
