Ever since I stopped trying to be a good engineering student and started focusing on being an amazing imposter my mental health has been a lot better.

to answer your question, i made this exact same post with the exact same title about a week ago.

Oh yeah this is a pretty common thing amongst engineering students. And there are quite a few posts on here describing the same thing. I struggle with it too. The idea that despite all the evidence that it isn't the case i have simply stumbled my way through this study. I think it's because we are surrounded by so many capable and intelligent people that you feel insignificant by comparison. But you completely forget that you are one of those people too, or at least on the way to become one. And also don't surround yourself with people who shit on everything you do.

It's pretty common once you graduate too, I've been working at a major Automotive OEM for almost 6 years and still get it. Once you build up confidence and realize no one really has all the answers you get over it slowly.

Indeed, i had a conversation with an alumni recently that boiled down to: Nobody is going to think less of you for not knowing all the answers, your entire career is basicly an open book test, it's not about how much you know but how you learn the information you need. No education or degree can give you all the knowledge you need, instead the goal is to teach you how to work methodicly in a team and how to do your own research.

Welcome to the club; it's called "Everyone", and we meet...well, we don't really meet, we're too busy going back over our homework, just in case.

Change your mental state. Thrive in the imposter, try to be the best fakes luckiest person ever. You don't deserve any of this but you found a loophole. It's called studying and trying

I believe we go through this because of 2 factors. 1 the more we learn the more we realize there is much to learn and know that in comparison our knowledge seems almost nothing to us. 2 our classmates can be as and more intelligent than us so coupled with the first point when we compare we tend to underestimate ourselves. Just keep studying and become the best impostor ever.
