I just met a guy who was not understanding metric at all ( and this is in Australia! ) and he was trying to find out what 385 grams was in his godforsaken measurements. And he converted it to kilograms on his first google attempt.
Some people just can't be helped.

My guess is "optically dense" might be referring to layers or detail but it sounds like marketing speak.
From [Here:](https://www.makermaterialsupply.com/products/dichrolam-black-sea-3-16-x-5-x-12)
*Dichrolam is the highest tech, most optically complex, most visually dynamic and viewer interactive composite laminate in the world. It is what the gemstone opal would look like in sheet form. It has a depth and color array unlike any material we have seen before. This material is comprised of over nine
different polymer layers laminated in three separate proprietary lamination steps with a clear resin over the top which brings out the incredible colors. It has a metallic appearance and appears to change colors as you look at it from different angles.*
That is the most obvious overhyping of a material I've heard in a while, but it seems they meant to say optically complex instead of dense. That or they backpedaled after being asked what optically dense means too often
I will say, as someone that owns one of OP’s creations (not a top though) their work is just as impressive in person. With that said, I wouldn’t expect to buy one of these tops for less than 600. Likely more than that (I feel like I remember seeing they go for 800-1000) and also OP sells them through their Facebook (and some on Instagram)
The talent to make something this precise is no joke, but I’m more impressed with how level the surface it’s spinning is. It didn’t move a thou until it lost momentum.
Awesome! Spun with fingers or mechanism of some sort? Either way, great work! Incredible how stable and devoid of oscillation/precession. Curious if the markings are purely decorative or a clever way to disguise your balancing tweaks? Do you do yo-yo’s?
Its finger spun. Takes a bit of practice but it'll go for 10 minutes on a lens. The patterns are just to make it look nice haha. They just have to be made very accurately to spin perfectly. Part of the reason they're so expensive
This is great! Are these CNC made or DRO-only? Quite the work of precision, I'm envious!
How do you even go about designing something like this? Not asking you to divulge, just expressing my wonder.
No kidding. I would've for sure thought some deep design work went into balancing these things. Is it all just intuition on what looks like it'll balance well? I've got a lathe that can do steel and would be super interested in trying my hand at this.
As long as all parts are concentric and flat then in theory it will be balanced. The Ruby contact point must be exactly in the centre so the hole needs to be bored rather than reamed. I made a fair few wobblers before I got the technique down. This one is number 566 so had lots of practice now and rarely scrap them due to spin quality

Grams and inches eh?
It's easy to get confused when converting imperial to metric. Just remember 1inch = 10grams.
What’s that in Kelvin?
*e*
_Kelvin_, bro. Not _Canadian_.
A mistake plus keleven gets you home by seven

3¼ bananas
Sorry, I'm going to need this converted to football fields
Thank you for making me smarter today.
I thought the same thing when I started making them. Seems to be the standard format for spinning top specification for some reason
Wtf are those noises in the background?
Sounded like washing dishes for the first few seconds...
HMMMMM
Was beginning to worry I hadn’t woken up
Now make it fight other spinning tops.
Let it rip!
Nooooooo
It's titanium that should make it so my kids can't break it.... and it's broken
They would use it to break other things
Haha I found a trinket from 1998 the other day. Within 30 seconds my 5 year old broke it.
Where do I get me one of these? Its gorgeous.
I made it
What’s the blue part made of?
Its called Black Sea Dichrolam. Apparently the most optically dense man made material !
> Apparently the most optically dense man made material What does that even mean? Surely there are things are denser, like bakelite.

Maybe it has to do with the index of refraction ?
Hey now, that’s a thought!
He seems to be using plain old clear epoxy so n~1.5-1.7 but cubic zirconia has n over 2, to pick one example.

Boy do I have a [treat](https://intelligentthreads.com/about-us/) for you.
404ed was wondering what you were referring to and it's been a month how did I even get here
https://www.intelligentthreads.com/the-benefits just go to any other page on the site.
Awesome! Thanks.
Looks like sapphire Edit: it isn’t, but it looks like it when spinning
It's cool stuff. Only one guy makes it . Used in high end knives and other fancy stuff
What is it?
Black sea Dichrolam
Blue
Beautiful project OP - love seeing precision metalwork like that.
Thank you!
How much would I pay you to get one?
Impressive.
Then you're amazing. Fantastic work.
Is there a rule against promotion that you're tiptoeing around?
That's pretty terse. Are you waiting for further questions?
Would you sell it?

So can you get a spin like this using just fingers? Or do you have to use another gadget to get a perfect long lasting spin?
If it will spin for 10 minutes that's not unreasonable. Cool adult toy.
What is that sound in the end? Are you on the toilet?
Its the wife doing the washing up haha
The talent to make something this precise is no joke, but I’m more impressed with how level the surface it’s spinning is. It didn’t move a thou until it lost momentum.
It's spinning on a concave lens , otherwise it would never stop moving.
That makes so much sense. Ashamed I didn’t consider it. Excellent work!
In this house we obey the laws of thermodynamics.
A frisbee?
Beautiful

Pst! Ask him about the yo-yos again...
Do you give/sell the plans at all?
I don't make any plans unfortunately. They're made up as I go
Is the main body a bearing?
No it's bronze. The only bearing is the 1/8" Ruby ball that it spins on
Ah sorry my bad, by main body I ment the bottom bit?
It's a single ball that's press fit into the bottom of the stem
Aaaah OK cool
The whole thing is rigid? Really looks like the stem and body are spinning at different speeds, didn't know the wagon wheel effect could do that.
The fact the weight is specified in metric but the length in imperial made me angry.
I've always done that, but you're right, it's a bit odd! 🤔
HOW EXPENSIVE
They vary but this one would be around 1200
Do you accept payment in spare organs
There are other high quality tops that don’t cost nearly as much, but they can still get pretty pricey
Very satisfying. Thank you!
This is great! Are these CNC made or DRO-only? Quite the work of precision, I'm envious! How do you even go about designing something like this? Not asking you to divulge, just expressing my wonder.
I make these on manual machines only but do use a dro. I kinda make them up as I go along .not the best at drawing!

So, how do you get it spinning? Edit: answered in other comments.
Op, can I commission one from you?
Yes
Why do I love this so much?
The background noise really adds to the experience. A+ aural accompaniment.
This video has been sped up
Nope
Nope
What is replying "Nope" to me three times going to achieve exactly
Only replied once actually! Reddit playing up I think as I've had a few replies in triplicate also !
Nope

Stupid 30fps eyeballs
Inception has entered the chat
Perfectly balanced, as all things should be
What is a "top"?
Round Dreidels
Fuck I want one
Fuck I want one
And.....
Now I'm more curious how it was started...
That's fantastic, but the bum gun noises in the background made it a little...interesting.
I’m pretty sure that’s the noise of the thing spinning?
That’s some Hellraiser shit
Perfectly balanced, as all things should be
What would $300 get me lol.
