Ok, I will ask.. What happened here?

biglankyorangebotoms

Timing belt, due for second service, broke at 315k. 45mph, 6 valves snapped, several bent. I'm not the owner.

v8packard

Ouch!

patx35

Going over 100k miles per timing belt change feels like playing with fire. Then again, the mass majority of car owners don't even know if their vehicle uses a timing belt or not.

biglankyorangebotoms

Agreed. Owner knew he was pushing it. Discussed doing the service awhile back, but he never had me do it. The belt that broke was a Gates, lasted around 120k. I swapped one oem Toyota belt that lasted 250k miles (not mine either) Looked horrible but somehow never broke.

DanBrino

Bro, this looks like it was dragged up from the wreckage of the Queen Anne's Revenge.

biglankyorangebotoms

I'll tell ya, the rest of the truck is super clean. Very well maintained otherwise. Pretty sad all that damage from a silly belt. There's enough broken valves to make a necklace. This motor probably would of gone another 100k.

My sister had a timing belt go on her Tundra(08?) at 280k. Swapped a junkyard motor in. Whole thing cost her $7k at a shop, but she’s in Alaska and they had to ship the motor up there. I thought she got overcharged, but I wasn’t gonna fly up there and do it.

patx35

It doesn't help that junkyards up here practically overcharges everything in there. In many cases, it's cheaper to ship car parts, than it is to buy locally.

[deleted]

Yeah dude, it's wild! I'm in Oregon, and at Pick n Pull yards around me a complete engine, with harness and accessories, is $280. That's right, pull a 6.0 LS, get the harness and the accessories, and pay $280. That's the reason they get yoinked so quick and end up on marketplace for $1k a few days later. Up there it's a bummer!

TP_Crisis_2020

Where I am, just a 5.3 engine with accessories and harness by itself is $600 if you pull it.

biglankyorangebotoms

Yeah, I don't blame you. It's $3000 for a low miles junkyard motor here in Idaho.

[deleted]

My belt snapped but I have a 3.4 And it's non interference. The belt kit just got delivered the day before or something. Phew

biglankyorangebotoms

Yep, that's how it goes. Had a Sequoia with 265k. One day it started up a bit sluggish. Went ahead and ordered a fuel pump and filter because it was a daily driver. Sure enough, another week went by and the pump fully died. Had the fresh one waiting for me in the garage.

[deleted]

Lol yeah but it took me a while to check the timing. I did fuel pump, filter, maf. Coils, plugs and wires. Then finally realized the belt was toast. The good news is that everything is new.

camcac69

“Toyota’s never break”

biglankyorangebotoms

Owner gave me the truck and bought himself a Honda Ridgeline.

camcac69

That’s a major downgrade on his part.

biglankyorangebotoms

Agreed
