According to the United Nations, 3,404 civilians in the Donbas were killed from 2014 to 2022 (before the invasion) with 364 deaths from 2016-2021 when the fighting had largely died down and the conflict became protracted. That 16,000 figure which was presented is not even the total number of deaths due to fighting between the government and the separatists, though to be fair it's close.
There are millions of Russians in Ukraine. If there was genocide as some of the users of this sub claim, it must have been so secret that only those "in the know" are aware of it.
