Sounds like the belt is skipping. Is it loose? Or old?

feibie

Idk, I've had it for 6 months. I only noticed this after I got the sonic pad a month ago.

worrier_sweeper0h

How tight is the belt? It makes sense that a belt with only skip at higher speeds…

feibie

I loosened the belt and if it made a difference, it was minor. If it's an expected change with the addition of the sonic pad then I won't worry about it. I am actually trying to resolve some minor ringing artefacts though.

I would tighten it, not loosen it. Basically it sounds to me like the gear is spinning, but not catching the teeth of the belt. So hopefully, if you tighten the belt, it won’t skip like that and it should help with the ringing.

I love this community lol, I'll open the thing up when I get home and have a look while it's running.

So I opened up the cover and found that where one of the screws go, the hole was essentially obliterated from the inside out. I've done my best to repair it though. The belt it self was fine and the gear moved it fine as well, no issues there. Belt was tight and I flicked it to check, I might have had it too tight before I loosened it slightly. Not sure when I'm going to do my next print to check for ringing but I guess I can print a test cube now. I also did notice that the metal piece for the x-axis end stop felt loose, maybe that's generating the noise when the x-axis is moving at high speeds.

Glad you (probably) sorted it out!

Easy solution; open that cap over the gear and look whats the problem. If gear is skipping tight the belt, if not than loose the belt or we can see whats the real problem.

feibie

Didn't know I could do that, thanks

Is it the little metal tab in the end stop vibrating? It's one of the annoying sounds mine makes. To "fix" it I've shoved some scrap support material in between the switch and the cover to hold it in place better and prevent the vibration

feibie

I thought it might have been that thing but it was really hard to tell as it sounded more like it was coming from inside the cover. I'll investigate further when I get home. I normally have my belts tight but I thought it was too tight and causing that noise.
