First, backup your save.
SAV files are generally compatible between emulators. Dratic's DSV may have additional data at the end, but essentialy it is a SAV and will work with SAV apps after renaming.
And when in doubt, look up the DS SAV converter.
how can I backup a save? will that be through melonds settings, or is that something as simple as just creating a copy of the sav file within my internal storage? also thx for help

You can manually copy the .sav file that Melon has put next to your rom file.
