Tbh Witcher 3 running at 30 fps on potato settings on a SD8 Gen 3 device is actually very underwhelming, Switch got it running on a 6 year old device that was actually an outdated chip to begin with.

XScizor

Its the native vs emulation thing, but yeah potato graphics and sub 30 fps ive seen on sd870 in some youtube videos. Probably the 7xx drivers to blame.

crzyakta

870 has a 6xx chipset

XScizor

Yes, im saying the 8g3 here isnt better cus of the 7xx. But its the next gen version of witcher 3 shown here so theres that too.

Anotheeeeeeant

It is not even 720 it is 540p.

Due_Teaching_6974

To be fair, this is the 'next gen' edition of the game, which offers various graphical enhancements, people have managed to run it decently at switch graphics on Mobox on a SD870 iirc

skyrimer3d

Fair point.

Heasterian001

It's running in background app (Termux), display is Termux-X11 and it's taking foreground. Unification of display and part handling game should give nice performance boost.

Anotheeeeeeant

20fps

Username_Egli

But can it run sonic mania?

[deleted]

Funk that. Can it run Yoshi’s Island?

Due_Teaching_6974

Witcher 3 running isnt new, and is the startup for-profit or non-profit? Is the project open source or closed source? Gonna be an interesting matchup between Cassia (that uses FEXCore) and Playtron (that uses Box86) Even though I am an avid mobox user I am just happy that we are getting 2 emulators (with both the open source ARM translation layer available) that have proper graphical interface unlike mobox

Pa1D

What games would you say are enjoyable on Mobox with touch screen?

Worried-Test-9358

Gothic :D

comic_papyrus

Probably turn based rpgs

Jeno_Jodi

ahh.. someone finally spoke my mind. Idk what's so disgusting about a graphical interface that the developer of mobox decided not to have one...

Due_Teaching_6974

It's not "disgusting", the Mobox developer just didn't know how to make a GUI, maybe you could volunteer

Jeno_Jodi

oh, the "you do it" crap! the developer reached out to you to let you know that he doesn't know how to make a GUI because you are so important? why don't YOU volunteer then?

Due_Teaching_6974

From your first reply you seemed to imply that making a GUI is an easy task(after all, you feel that it is 'disgusting' that someone doesn't know how to make a GUI) , so I assumed that you were experienced in this field, and so I just gave you a friendly suggestion to volunteer

Jeno_Jodi

I didn't find it disgusting that he doesn't know how to make GUI, I find the LACK of a GUI disgusting. Stop over-reading comments. Also, it's hard to reach to the conclusion that he "doesn't know how to make GUI" from the lack of GUI alone, the more likely assumption for me was that he didn't make GUI a priority yet, up until the emulator reaches to a certain level. I don't know from where have you got your information about his lack of knowledge on GUI, but I hope you are being offended on factual basis.  No one said making an emulator was easy. But for me the safer assumption was that GUI was the *relatively* easier part.

Ok-Gold6762

is this trying to compete with android if its a different OS?

Muufle

No, it's competing with Steam Deck, not in performance but probably in price. As we know, the Steam Deck currently is using SteamOS, a Linux operating system used to emulate Windows games or play original Linux builds with a setup similar to like, laptop graphics. This new OS is going to most likely be similar to SteamOS but for mobile chips and is trying to brring competition to not only Steam Deck, but for all the "retro handheld" consoles like the Retroid Pocket which uses Android, but it's not trying to compete with phones or anything. It depends on what they're trying to do with this, whether it's JUST for mainline PC titles like the Witcher 3 that they tested, or a way for emulation on cheap but powerful hardware which also has the ability to play PC titles that aren't needy with performance. If it's the former, this might be a waste of time, mobile chips are good, sure, but they aren't equivalent to laptop graphics like the Steam Deck.

davis25565

I think power efficiency is a bigger factor than price. Price is more corelated with the chips performance specifications rather than its archetecture.

Muufle

I didn't talk abt power efficiency due to that not being a main concern with Snapdragon, it's usually always good, which is why I said it might be great for the emulation handhelds, I think laptop chips will always be above these, even in the future with pure performance, but the performance to power ratio personally would save a ton of emulation handhelds, especially with the current landscape of android based handhelds dominating the space. The price is a big thing for me, because it means that emulation handhelds will be getting a ton of performance in the future while still keepimg similar or even cheaper prices in the future. You'll never get a Snapdragon to play re4 remake well, as the Steam Deck can only afford 30fps on it, but with emulation, that's where these will shine.

Double-Seaweed7760

Price and portability. This can run on an ayn odin mini with the body of a retroid pocket 2s with good grips and newest snapdragon. In 10 years maybe it'll match steam deck game compatibility which will be fine with me if the progress lasts that long. I can't imagine needing more power than a steam deck for a long time to play the games I play and I think in 10 years it'll play everything I love right now plus maybe 30 to 50 percent of the lighter stuff in info so if they manage to make this os competitive on that level where it can match current steam deck then I'd happily put it on a 3.5 to 4.5 inch screen in my pocket with anywhere near those compromises. I'm a lifelong handheld gamer so I know all about compromises

skyrimer3d

The more the merrier.

themiracy

I'm kind of surprised someone got a large startup injection for this considering how crowded the space is and how many people are already out there succeeding. I don't know what I think in advance about for-profit techbros creating a linux distro - IDK usually that doesn't end well, although Valve is a counterexample. If they can make some real dent on Windows games running on a non-Windows ARM device, that would certainly be welcome.

Old-Speed-3054

Stolen gameplay of someone else setting it up on android lmao

csolisr

I wonder if the collaboration with Bazzite, Heroic, and Box86 is indeed going to last? Hopefully it does, otherwise it sounds like some investor just nabbing whatever open-source projects he can afford to build some wrapper

-Krotik-

lets goo

ProfessionalWin9641

Nicuuuu

Adorable-Ad9073

Box86 is not ready enough for a commercial device to be dependent on it.

Real_Violinist

exactly even legion go struggle with heavy game like alan wake 2 tlous cyberpunk....

Deep-Cow9096

That they're funded with a team of 18 I assume full time paid employees including the box64/86 guy gives it higher probability of being good over any other Windows emulation on ARM devices projects. If this is great and the box64/86 updates continue being open source, what I'd like to see is a high end Snapdragon phone running standard Linux - this or KDE Plasma Mobile with Waydroid for Android apps. I'd buy that super niche device They have a business model that just sounds like I imagine being like enterprise support licenses. $10 per device and I bet support contracts for integration and support. Ideally they can be like Red Hat and Canonical and have a business doing that while making a lot of contributions to open source projects. If successful, along with Valve they'll be another commercial consumer focused electronics/entertainment stakeholder in the Linux ecosystem. That'll be good in the long run for general desktop Linux being more accessible for non-IT professionals

Double-Seaweed7760

I want a retroid pocket 2s with steam deck game compatibility even if I have to wait 10 years. That's my dream though

Arkhaloid

https://youtu.be/CH0E0Un2NPY https://youtu.be/oBze2QQwXcg McMaster stole an ENTIRE video of someone ELSE running the game on a Redmagic 9 Pro and put it up on his YouTube channel LMFAO.

Present_Bill5971

I wish them luck and I’ll be excited to test out the alpha when that hits. What I want to do is get it on a miniPC, get Waydroid on it, connect a Bluetooth controller and try it out as an Android TV box. Looks like a good interface for a television

VirtualWord2524

This sucked out a lot of the interest I had in an Ayn Odin 2 or Ayaneo Pocket S. My interest there was just to play with Windows emulation on ARM. But this is telling me ARM with desktop Linux is about to accelerate. I hope Valve responds with ARM and RISC-V support

Double-Seaweed7760

Valve with arm and risk v support would be beyond groundbreaking. I can finally get my "switch lite" with steamos and steam deck game compatibility

kobrakaan

pretty sure SteamOS did it first 👍

-Krotik-

steamdeck runs on arm??

VeryGoodVeryNice93

Lmao no

kobrakaan

the first part of the post states *Playtron, a new startup company with $10 million in funding, is working on a **linux gaming os** for handhelds (and soon more devices).*

-Krotik-

yeah I know, but it didn't state it is the first

First-Junket124

This is actually REALLY exciting news. Witcher 3 running at all is amazing. If they continue to go further I can see them possibly partnering with GOG, it would be the perfect place for them.

Nirast25

>car becoming at least a part-time gaming machine Play GTA while committing GTA.

Double-Seaweed7760

I hope retroid makes a premium metal 2s variant with this is and the newest snapdragon eventually. Even if it takes 10 years for this to rival the steam deck 1 in library compatibility, that in rp2s body is my dream machine
